CONCURSO SPAGUETTI BRIDGE_UAH18/19.
Concurso celebrado en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares y patrocinado por Pastas Gallo.
Objeto del concurso:
Construcción de un modelo de puente, a escala, utilizando únicamente como material resistente espaguetis de sección maciza, o tallarines, unidos por pegamento en sus extremos.
Participantes:
Alumno/a matriculado en el Grado de Fundamentos de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, Ciencia y Tecnología de la Edificación, Máster Habilitante en Arquitectura, MUPAAC, MUGISPA, Máster Universitario en Ingeniería Industrial o TFG, a título individual o en grupos de hasta tres alumnos como máximo, pertenecientes a la Universidad de Alcalá

Categoría 1: Puente con el sistema estructural más innovador

Nota del editor de video: Hay comentarios sobre que el agua se vierte muy rápido, y en el video parece que así es: Las partes donde se arroja agua están ligeramente aceleradas para no alargar la duración del video, en la actividad original el agua se vertió entre un 30 y un 70% mas despacio, depende de las partes del video.

Buenos días, como sugerencia para futuras ediciones del concurso: desde mi experiencia en la universidad, donde realizamos un concurso de características similares, lo ideal es aplicar las cargas mediante el uso de un tornillo sin fin y un extensómetro calibrado para traducir sus mediciones de longitud en unidades de fuerza. No son equipos raros y resulta más sencillo girar el tornillo sin fin a una velocidad constante que intentar minimizar el efecto de la caída de agua.

The red board was just over the edges of table but not on the first one. I didn't care for the woman doing the test. Even doing more damage to the bridge afterwards. I would want to inspect the damage for at least a few minutes.

i also did that. usually the wooden board to which the bucket is attached should be shorter. plus some teams used more spaghetti and went far over the edge. they should weigh the bridge or give a limit for number of spaghetti used.

As an engineer who had to do something similar in university. These bridges are not only structurally sound, they are beautiful!! WOW !!! wow oh wow. To all those students who built these bridges WELL DONE !!! I have never felt so good about the future of structural engineering. . Uhmm as a side note to the pasta company. Errr pasta is best when it is soft and pliable (even before being placed in hot water) - are you sure this is good advertising?

it wasnt suprising that the one bridge that was actually shaped like cosh won. not only chain curves are naturally the strongest, they also used muscles to make it stronger.

At 4:48 if you slow the video down you can see that the tables are supporting most of weight when it breaks by how it catches on the table before being pulled down. By the weight distribution block spanning the entire length it is transfering some of the load to the table and throughout itself rather than testing the true strength of these bridges. The bridge supported from the center was a more realistic load and at 8:56 the new weight distributor was shorter and didn't allow the table to support the weight resulting in it breaking much sooner. ~Coming From an Engineer

The table is not really supporting most of the weight. Those red rubber mats are flexible and will distribute the weight on the bridge. The amount overlapping on the table is negligible. That said I agree it shouldn’t touch the table.

@@lidoz Agree with you but those rubber (or whatever material they are) mats shouldn't be there. The mats may be, or not, touching the table, they may be off center on the bridge and they distribute the load in an unrealistic manner. Bottom line take them off and test the bridge with only the materials it is supposed to be made of, that is: Spaghetti.

@@silverglass6635 Depends on the bridge type ,I would say. Most older bridges have connection points that can be similar to Rubber mats, basically Clay and Dirt that supports A and B. Not everything is built with stone and anchoroed properly on both sides when its duty is merely to work for the purpose.

Very good catch! The result (let alone winning!) should be disqualified! Where I participated the weight "distributor" wasnt even a distibutor just a 10cm by 5cm block of wood with the hook and we had to incorporate that into the design. This way the pasta holds everything! And there were teams achieving north of 550 kilos of weight holding! (not us :D )

Creo que puede considerarse una desviación estándar, recuerda que deben soportar muchas variantes, pero también hay que ser realistas, estas NO son pruebas de laboratorio y probablemente la mayoría o todos esos diseños jamas serán utilizados en la vida real. ;)

Me encanta cuando se aprende con diversión y aquí sin duda lo habéis conseguido. Jurado y participantes disfrutando de llevar al límite sus estructuras. Me parece interesante el ganador que no hasta el momento del colapso se mantuvo estructuralmente intacto. Hubiera estado genial que los propios participantes justificaran el porqué de sus diseños y que han priorizado (diseño, reducción de materiales, facilidad/tiempo de construcción, etc). Supongo que la tabla distribuye la carga de manera uniforme, pero en la práctica lo que hace es eliminar el momento angular y sólo prueba las estructuras en su momento cortante, por eso todos fallan por el extremo.

Yo pienso que más que ser una ventaja, es un fallo en cuanto medir la capacidad de la estructura se trata, ya que la tabla no es del todo rígida, por lo que el momento angular no se elimina por completo, además, está puesta sobre la mesa (como se ve en el minuto 4:47). En mi humilde opinión.

Buenos puentes de los alumnos. Mala evaluación del profesor. La tabla no debería llegar de un lado a otro de la mesa. Los puentes no resistían el peso, lo hacía la tabla. Los espaguetis se rompían con la flexión de ésta. Habría bastado hacer un puente sin traviesas para ganar. También utilizasteis un criterio muy difuso para determinar el momento en que el puente se consideraba que había colapsado. Alumnos bien. Profesor mal. Suspenso al profesor, por favor esmérate en hacerlo mejor la próxima vez.

This was a project that I used to do with my 6th grade enrichment classes. We used a set number of toothpicks and white glue. The whole school would witness the load-bearing competition. The kids learned a lot about how bridges are built, and especially the importance of triangles!

Testing is flawed as the bridges failure point is based solely on the shear resistance of the ends of the bridge. Lots of fun though, the easy winn is to take all your material and laminate them into heavy beam work and cross bracing to lay the load stick onto.

Yes, though this is at the School of Architecture. Probably these are all freshmen; it's a common freshman exercise in many engineering/architecture schools. It's a great way to encourage teamwork and get the new students to think hard about structures, loads, forces; and debate and discuss within the team which approach is the best. And it's fun!

I was a biology major in college . I signed up for a physics class only to find out it was specifically designed for engineering majors. The professor told me I can take the course and he’ll give me some slack on the exams . We all had to build bridges out of balsa wood sticks and do the same stress tests as in this video. Out of 20 of the engineering students bridges , mine ( a bio major ) came in 2nd !!!!!!

Muy interesante proyecto y bastante divertido. A mí me encargaron en mi facultad hacer un puente similar de palitos de paleta de madera, pero nos tenía que soportar al integrante más pesado y fue algo realmente difícil, porque era el proyecto final que definía el pase de la materia 😂

Si, de hecho se cayó porque se rompió la tabla.

La tabla del primero no se rompió de hecho nunca se rompió. Pero el no usar la tabla en todos los modelos no repartía la presión por toda la estructura. De hecho para una simulación real necesita la tabla más uno o más cuerpos desplazandoce por el es camino del puente esto le cambiaría los puntos de presión resultando la parte más débil la expuesta. Y para algo más real pues ya entran más variables como tipos de materiales, resistencia de suelo, velocidades de viento, micro temblores, etc.

A mi me parece raro que usen tabla ya que es esta la que absorbe el esfuerzo de flexión, al final fallan los apoyos por corte (en vigas lo "normal" seria que falle en el medio, no en los extremos como fallaron todos). También seria interesante que todos los concursantes usen los mimos gramos de espaguetis sino ganara el que mas use en lugar del que mejor diseñe.
