2.7 millions Americans will ‘get their bell rung’ by a concussion this year. This condition is classified as a mild traumatic brain injury, potentially causing major deficits. Dr. Elizabeth Pieroth understands first-hand the impact of concussion on pro athletes, youth athletes and average people. She explains new science behind concussion treatment and why the old school ‘dark room’ is no longer valid or effective. Elizabeth is a neuropsychologist who has spent her career dedicated to the assessment and treatment of individuals who suffer concussions. She works with individuals ranging from children to professional athletes. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I recovered from a concussion and PTSD last year. I suffered the concussion in May and the PTSD started in August. The doctors told me just that to rest and prescribed me medication. But I tried something different this time. So I designed for myself a recovery program I readjust my nutrition and life style 180°. I gave the brain it's own fuel (fats, water and air) and green leafy foods. I did exercises such as sudoku, visualisation exercises, different meditations, puzzles, reduced the number of languages used in one day also the number of people. I went for at least 30 min walks, did yoga and danced to heal my balance. My memory and speach were the most damaged. Also, due to the emotional and psychological abuse, my amigdala was already suffering. So I also had strong mood swings and was emotionally out of balance. So feelings such as anxiety, panic attacks, sadness, anger etc I regulated with different breathing exercises, chanting mantras, daily journaling, adjusting my nutrition, and many other approaches.. I regulated my nervous system slowly, felt every single emotion, learn from it and kept on readjusting my recovery program according to my current daily needs. I did many other things that I don't have space to write here but I recovered in 6 weeks after I started my own treatment.🙏

Adolescent concussion may cause novel psychiatric illness. Each concussion sets up the next for the damage to start where it left off causing a cascading effect. Some researchers think it becomes a chronic neurodegenerative disease and what pulls you out of remission is stress. soldiers returning war with PTSD also had concussion injury to a statistically significant degree. Concussion damages your ability to control the stress response. If anxiety starts in the lower brain, you can't think it away with a higher brain. But if you are a woman you will likely be thought of as a an emotional basket case. Up to 30% of people experiencing concussion will also develop depression or anxiety. The brain damage from concussion is to the neural networks or the white matter and happens over a period of time so it is often not connected to the concussion by the patent. Concussion injury is serious and you should be afraid of it. And yes there is a lot of research in the last decade, but don't expect your doctor to know any of it. It doesn't even help if you tell them about it. Print out the research articles and keep them with you all the time. I saw a psychiatrist monthly and was misdiagnosed for decades. Never was I asked if I had experienced concussion injury. If you feel like the everyone you know is in a club and you're not a member, if you can't seem to manage your life and find yourself late, late paying bills, prioritizing, managing time, experience impulsive behavior, think. If a sucker punch or meanness in general fogs up you mind and leaves you feeling disoriented, think. It doesn't have to be a knockout concussion to have these effects. Using a damaged brain to figure out that you have brain damage is a long process. The gift in this is that you learn that you are not your thoughts. You are the observer, you learn to dismiss a thought when necessary. Obviously this has affected my life deeply. And I wish I could get the word out. I survived so far by living an ultra simple Life. Since I cannot handle stress, I do my utmost Not to cause any. People will be people and you know what stinkers they are. I keep to myself for safety.

Thank you. I have had multiple concussions but never went to the doctor for any of them. I did just "keep moving", but my brain is messed up. I didn't even know I had TBI until I was in my 50's. Now I go to a TBI support group (it is held on the phone because of covid). It is held in the USA and anyone can join. If interested, let me know. I will find out how you can join.

@@cbryce9243 I'm interested for my son. He has a TBI. He was on a motorcycle w/no helmet. 65 mph and crashed into a wooden Pole. Was in trauma unit for 40 days. We are now doing out patient rehab. He gets terrible headaches, can't stand bright lights or loud noises. Please get the info for me so I can pass to my son. Thank you. Good luck to you and God bless you. 🌹

I was in a horrible car accident in highschool. Concussion, bulging disks in my back, lacerations all over me, glass embedded in my wounds. The only after care I recieved was being given a serrated needle by my primary care physician to cut out my own glass which had been left sticking out of my sewn-up lacerations and deep under my skin. I was previously very active, dancing and working out every day. When I complained of nausea from my pain medication to my primary physician, they only said to "eat more" while on mandated bedrest and I gained weight. School provided 3 days of schoolwork per week and no tutelage during the three month at-home stay. I failed all my advanced courses. My poor care made it so that what were recoverable injuries, impacted my life permanently. I guess the fact that my parents only came to the hospital three days after the accident, gives a lot of incite into how taken care of I was in general. I hope/wish for more for our youth today and I wish more was understood about concussions back then.

I believe this is all great work. Any chance in child abuse being linked to early age mild brain injury?
@cbryce9243
@cbryce9243 2 жыл бұрын
Certainly! It doesn't have to be mild. When my parents were not home, my oldest brother knocked me unconscious for 4 hours. When my parents returned home, they thought I was asleep in the sofa. I never told them because they always blamed me for making him mad and we deserved what we got.

And severe ear ringing, which is often overlooked. It's not on the concussion symptom list I did daily for a few years. Rest is good what about that you can't get up? I remember I would sleep 15 hours a days and I literally couldnt get up. Anyway, all Mtbi are all different.

Doesn't work with people that's have multiple conditions I'm a epileptic dyslexic with a major knee injury awaiting surgery yes I would love to get up and run swim and do anything to help recover yes I get anxiety and depression, doctors always seem to forget that people are fighting multiple conditions at once so you can't treat them one at a time. Swimming is an awesome treatment for pain as long as I don't have a epileptic seizure and drown, or fall of the bike again. Don't just try to treat concussion treat the condition but gave you the concussion.

Problem with returning to work too soon is that you are expected to perform at pre-concussion level. Experiencing how concussion has impeded processing ability makes the issue worse, creating panic or stress which further impedes performance and healing. Result is being fired from job (of course, any excuse is used other than medicsl..such as lack of funding, changed company objectives, etc.) Best to work with similar mental tasks and cognitive therapy away from work place, until can perform at reasonable level.

You paid by sports teams? Most beer leagues tell the boys: “Get back on the field”. This is such a poor TedTalk. Also, mild traumatic brain injury often needs therapy for anger management. You have thrown the baby out with the bath water here missy! Where are your stats?
