Why we use past simple in the 2nd conditional and with the adverb of time tomorrow?
@AngloLinkEnglish10 жыл бұрын
@Mars Chan In many situations you can use either the 1st of the 2nd conditional. However, as I explain in this lesson, the connotation changes: 'I know you will not believe me if I tell you.' means there is a HIGH probability that I will now tell you, even if you don't believe me. 'I know you would not believe me if I told you.' means I am debating with myself whether to tell you or not. The probability of me telling you is now lower than in the first sentence. The same is true for your other example. By using the second conditional, he is saying: 'we can but it is unlikely that we will.'
@AngloLinkEnglish10 жыл бұрын
This is another use of 'would' as a synonym for 'used to' (frequent action in the past). I clarify this usage in my lesson called 'Modal Verbs: will, shall, would'.

@AngloLinkEnglish8 жыл бұрын
When you see the past tense in the second conditional, don't think of it as a past 'tense', just a form (past subjunctive) that changes the degree of probability: I think I will see her >> If I see her (high probability)... I don't think I will see her >> If I saw her (low probability) You can also say: If I were to see her tomorrow ...

On my notes something that helped me made see it even more logical was puting the four conditionals on a sheet of paper : the conditional 0 at the bottom and the conditional 3 at the top of the page, conditionals 1 and 2 in between. The higher on the page the higher the uncertainty of the action that depends on the condition. Like in the mountains: the higher the altitude, the thinner the air.
