Conducting Reflexive Thematic Analysis using NVivo

Yes, that's it exactly. I did not make that clear enough in the video, but you're exactly right. Doing it this way will preserve your history of thought progression through the 6 stages and will thereby track thought progression and facilitate the production of a clear audit trail for your methodology chapter upon which the trustworthiness and plausibility of findings are so often dependent when your work is being reviewed.

Ben, as always, high-quality material from you, so thank you for that. I have a clarifying question about copying the codes from phase to phase. If I copy the codes from phase 2 to phase 3, to further work on them. Then when I view the coding stripes for the transcript belonging to the video file I'm coding, I have multiple coding stripes since they are now both a part of phases 2 and 3? How do you go about that when doing your TA? I find it a bit confusing and would like to hear your thoughts on the process when copying codes from one phase to another.

Great presentation thank you. You mention the benefits of being able to demonstrate the audit trail and I like the way you have used the Braun and Clarke phases in NVivo. What is the best way to create a report to show the audit trail to somebody, for example a supervisor?

I would export the stages separately to 3rd party apps such as Excel or Word or PowerPoint for better presentation options than NVivo offers. Thank you for the Novel video. I am following the steps in Nvivp for my PhD. in 13:33 minutes you moved to Memos for the phases but that was under the title of literature. How was this linked to your interviews and Phases in Codes. I mean how can you track between them??

A memo may be stand-alone or linked to an item. You can also organise a folder structure for your memo. In the example the memo was about familiarisation, so it was in the memos folder for Phase 1 named 'Phase 1 initial thoughts on codes'. It is not in the literature folder which also has memos but which serve a different purpose. The memo was not linked to any one interview file because it addresses several interviews, so it is a stand-alone memo. See an example from the data analysis section of a methodology chapter describing the practical application of RTA in a real study. While there is a table showing corresponding processes between the six stages of RTA and what was done in NVivo, the software is the least important aspect because it is just an organisational tool and does not conduct analysis nor write reports. @ben meehan I need to do reflexive thematic analysis on 5 books separately and then, once that is completed, do it collectively across all the 5 books. Following the approach in the this video, I was thinking of creating the coding folders by phase, and then under each phase have a folder for each book and one for all books. This is my first time I'm using NVivo and I'm using a Mac. I'm trying to work out how best to do the initial coding on the files so that I know what files have what codes and then can copy that into the later phases. Particularly as some codes will be shared across files and some files will have unique codes. Is it possible to have the codes in the 'Codes' folder and then identify and copy only the codes relating to a particular file folder? Hope this makes sense. Otherwise, is it best for me to code each book in it's own project and then merge the 5 books into a project to do the combined book analysis? Thanks so much in advance! Felicity

Yes, you could make a subfolder under any phase and copy all your codes into it; then in one click, uncode all books bar the one you want to see unique coding for from the codes in the sub-folder. Your subfolder will now only contain coding from that book and some codes will be empty if the book in question was not coded there. You could either delete these empty codes in the subfolder or just note them because the absence of coding can sometimes be as illuminating as its presence. @@qdatraining Thanks so much for this and yay! When I go to do this I can't select any of the uncode options - they are all greyed out when I have the codes selected. Some of the codes have been aggregated into parents and some not. Do you know why this is?

@@felicity32 You need to select the files not the codes (the books you wish to remove from the copied subfolder) and then the 'Uncode' option will be available. Select this option from the menu and a dialogue box opens; browse to the subfolder and select it. You will be left with the one book represented in the codes. My thinking is that by knowing this I can then identify themes across all the books, as well as doing them individually.

Dear Hassan, I think the problem lies in your underlying assumption that this video is supposed to be a workshop. It isn't. Most training workshops are delivered over two days, and the Asynchronous online courses are delivered over four weeks. You cannot pack all of that into a one-hour video, and that was never the intention. The intention was to give you a quick overview of how you might apply a Reflexive Thematic Analysis in NVivo. I respectively suggest you invest some time and energy in some real training, as this is likely the reason you are lost. Coding in reflexive thematic analysis ought to be organic and open. You DO NOT need a pre-prapared list of codes with which to drag text into. This is a major difference between a reflexive approach to TA and other approaches such as 'Codebook' and 'coding reliability '.

Thank you for your contribution. However, I don't understand why you would make the assumption that the phase 2 - Systematic Data Codes were pre-prepared? Where in the video is this suggested? This study was a real environmental study conducted by Duke University in the US. The phase 2 codes WERE NOT prepared but developed organically and inductively from the interviews from the bottom up; a process that took several weeks. The entire point of the video was to show researchers how they might apply the 6 stages of IPA in a tool such as NVivo. It does not deviate in any way from the philosophical underpinnings of RTA.
