Gorgeous effect! Thanks for all the work and the sharing of a magical glaze combination.

You have a lot of "I did this, saw what it did, and then I did this..." Do you run a small glaze test kiln, or do you just have a ton of firings? I run about 1-2 glaze firings (we run two programs at my studio: 1-2 of each/week) but even with that fairly quick turnover, running that many consecutive tests would take 3-4 weeks. Love your videos, they are a tremendous help to me, a teacher who HATED glazing when I was at university.. Cheers.

Because the bowls are too thin to do it on the same day. Otherwise it doesn't get a good coat on the outside.

I am still new and just getting into mixing my own glazes. What to are you using for testing the specific gravity? Love your work.

This is great, thank you John! I'm wondering what temperature / firing schedule you would use to get those effects.

I love your book! Why do you let the liner glaze dry overnight?

It looks really nice. Is there a way of getting other colors for the Autumn's Crystal? It has a rabbit's hair quality to it.

Love the combination in the video, got your book and was looking at the recipe for the Autumn's Crystal matte and they are different from the video list ? Could you tell me which one is correct ?... All the best.

I took Autumn's and added the colorants for a silicon carbide red.

OK, but in the book it does not list Nepheline syenite as an ingredient but it does on your video ? Also the Silica and whiting are different quantities to the book ?
@johnbrittpottery7 жыл бұрын
You are right...i see I added the NS to the list and it pushed all the numbers down. So it should be like in the book with the colorants listed above.

Fantastic ! sort of new to mixing my own glazes, so in the early stages of trying to understand the chemistry. Only started pottery in March 2017 and want to get into the science of the craft. Making test tiles and getting some raw materials this week. ... Thanks for confirming the recipe.

So is the autumn red actually the correct formula for the base?
@patratacus6 жыл бұрын
Hi John, is the Satin Black pretty food safe? I haven't used too much Mason Stain so I don't know the formulation. Since you are glazing it inside your bowl, I assume it's not leaching anything.
@johnbrittpottery6 жыл бұрын
Well, Food safe means no lead or cadmium, so technically it is food safe. (not to be a smart ass but it is complicated) And "not leaching anything" is a very high bar. I have not tested it but am not worried. But actual testing is up to you because of your materials and firing make all the difference. So you will have to do it on your own. I have a PDF on my website called Is It Food Safe which is over 20 pages discussing this.

Hi John, the Autumn Crystal Matte recipe is completely different on your book, something went wrong on that book list... which recipe is correct, this or that? I guess this one...
@johnbrittpottery4 жыл бұрын
Have to look...Think I took Autumn's Crystal Matte and added colorants for electric red..silicon carbide, copper and tin.
