For those who remember him, Charles 'Bud' Tingwell was a wonderful actor & family man. He went to Australia to become part of a tv show in the 70's called 'Homicide'. The show originally began in 1964 but underwent changing casts thru the proceeding years. He was very good in it & made the show in 1974 till it ended in 1977. Also Michael Craig went to Australia too & appeared in many shows there, 'GP' being one of them.

Thank you so much for uploading this film. I really enjoyed it. I am a big fan of aviation films but I admit I had never heard of this one. I did some research after watching this. The fictional 'Phoenix' airliner in this film was played by an Avro Ashton which had previously been used as an engine test-bed by Bristol-Siddeley. The film is based on a novel by David Beaty, a former BOAC pilot. He based the novel on real-life incidents involving the De Havilland Comet airliner. In 1952, a BOAC Comet crashed on take off at Rome airport without loss of life but the aircraft was a write-off. The following year, a Canadian Pacific Airlines Comet crashed on take-off at Karachi airport, Pakistan, killing all 11 people on board. Official inquiries initially ruled both accidents as caused by pilot error but further investigations revealed serious flaws with the Comet's wing profile and engine inlets. Over the next 13 months, there were three more fatal crashes involving Comets with the combined loss of nearly 100 lives. The Comet was found to have major structural defects and the entire fleet of Comets was grounded for four years. A newer, re-designed version, the Comet 2, entered service in 1958.

The AVRO Ashton was the sole successor of the AVRO Tudor, a plane not without its own shortcomings that took a lot time to iron out, in the main. The Tudor was the second jet airliner in the world, behind the Comet, but only beaten by a few weeks.

The star is the old Radio Range low frequency navigation aid just at the end of its twenty year lifetime in service. It was remarkably simple yet gave four precise navigation directions from each ground installation, only a simple AM radio was needed on the plane. See it at time 15:30.
@f1master9733 жыл бұрын
Notice this is a movie based on true events, the plane the DH Comet. Badly riveted passengers windows, stalling wing, vertical air intakes that didn´t let enough air pass through the engines. After multiple crashes all those design and manufacturing errors were amended and the plane kept flying until the 80´s, and the with the NIMROD, a development of the Comet, the plane is still flying safely today. UK had a 4-5 year time advantage over the rest of the World in terms of jet aircraft, but being the pioneers they paid a high toll...their industry never recovered after that not just because of lack of expertise, but because a lack of support by the UK gov. through the hard times, and were more prone to buying US planes instead. With the TSR2 the biggest treason of them all. With Concorde the last nexus, and currently only Airbus and BAE factories keep UK civil aviation up and running at iddle.

A lot of UK cinema history among the players here... Ballard Berkeley (one of the Commissioners) better known today as the Major in Fawlty Towers. Jack Hedley (First Officer) starred in the mini-series, Who Pays the Ferryman ? Charles Lloyd-Pack (a Commissioner) - the father of the late Roger Lloyd-Pack (Vicar of Dibley & The Old Guys). At the Enquiry the pilot testified that he "opened up all SIX engines (of the Phoenix) to full power"....but the "Phoenix" we see subsequently seems to have only FOUR...???
@Deebz2703 жыл бұрын
Jack Hedley was more noteworthy as the SBO in the 'Colditz' series. And the ''Phoenix'' (Avro Ashton) had six gas turbines. The two inner engine nacelles carrying two gas turbines in parallel and with the outboard nacelles containing one gas turbine each. IT PAYS TO OBSERVE and KNOW YOUR AIRCRAFT RECOGNITION.

31mins 35 seconds. Gort gets up from the seat by pushing forward on the yoke. At 600 mph, that would have been quite interesting. Is it me or does there seem to be a lot of cigarettes and alcohol consumed by the pilots? "Gort - Klaatu barada nikto"
@tradeladder1463 жыл бұрын
Same as Today Minus The Cigarettes.
@keithammleter38242 жыл бұрын
That stick grabbing in getting up was done twice. The director should have picked up on the error and re-shot the scenes. But that pales into insignificance when there is the scene where hailstones, at 27,000 feet, take out the windscreen, and Goort orders the co-pilot to stick a cushion in the windscreen to block the 300 MPH wind and they carry on - without oxygen. Not only would hail at that altitude be completely impossible, the explosive decompression would have blown the pilot right out of the hole. And without oxygen, the workload and stress at that point would render them unconscious in less than a minute. I thought it was a good film until that point. Winsdscreens have blown out in real life - in one case a maintenance chief had used the wrong screws in fitting a windscreen (he must have been drunk), and the windscreen blew out shortly after takeoff (so altitude was not yet sufficient to require oxygen). No only did the captain get sucked out, the wind noise was so immense the remaining crew could not communicate at all by talking/shouting. Dumb movie people! Have they never driven a car at speed with a side window open? At 60 MPH you cannot hear the car radio.

A fine movie, aside from the utterly stupid and clumsy courtship tactics employed by the younger male lead from the moment he sees the young woman. What a moron! They figured a movie could not possibly attract any audience to the theater if it didn't have a painfully contrived and completely unconvincing "love story" sandwiched pointlessly into the main story line, and that's the only reason Gort's daughter was even in the script. Hollywood does the same thing now, inserting some dumb love story in pretty much every movie they make ("Titanic" being a classic example), so that hasn't changed much, has it? ;-) It's funny, but sad at the same time.
