I don't think we can even say that they performed well in combat; the vast majority of our knowledge that backs that up has been shown to be completely unreliable and largely a product of the fabrication of kill counts that was rampant during the war and even more rampant afterwards as Nazis were allowed to tell any tall tales they wanted to the Allies.

@@supernus8684 to me over engineering means you spend way too much time and effort and money on things that are sometimes not even necessary and trying to put in all the latest technology updates at the same time instead of using slightly older but battle tested stuff. it does not mean putting in a weak engine in a heavy vehicle and being fine with it thats just bad engineering.

Here's a plausible explanation (as hypothesized by me) to the ammunition numbers "issues" discussed around 9:20 in the clip: Numbers given * 13 propellant racks * 15 projectile racks * 18 rounds carried The first two can be explained by the designer making good use of the available space. No more than 13 propellant racks could be fitted, but having two more projectiles would allow some added flexibility in the mix of projectiles carried. Bringing more ammo than there were racks for was the norm for assault guns. StuG III had racks for just over 40 rounds but normally carried about 75 rounds into combat, with the excess piled up on the floor and wherever the crew could squeeze it in. I'd be surprised if bringing as many rounds as physically possible wasn't the norm also for the Emil.

The radio was a full-sized Fu.Spr, almost certainly the "d" version. There was an intercom, and since this was a Panzerjager, it should have been based on the "Kasten 23". Certainly that device fits the wall mounts. The intercom and radio were in the forward right corner of the compartment, hence the commander was also the radio op. That was normal for Panzerjager vehicles. The driver must have been on the intercom and in contact with the commander. But it's not clear if the gunner had a link too.

Jentz used the after action reports of Panzerjäger-Abteilung 521 to make the case that both the Dicker Max and Sturer Emil were seldom evolved in engagements where the caliber and range of their guns were justified in comparison to available 8,8 cm guns. It’s not just that these vehicles were difficult to keep going in the field, in the end they didn’t offer enough improvement in killing power to justify the refinement of their panzerjager designs.

Designs like the Bison were stopgap measures... Germany had been using towed artillery, and found they needed more mobile aritllery. Same goes with the Panzerjäger I. Germany found it needed heavier anti-tank guns, and needed them to be mobile, towing and setting them up worked great for preset defensive positions but not well for more mobile operations. when encountering russian armor it was found that the 37mmm couldn't pen, so they rushed a vehicle into production with a 47mm, while getting tanks with a 50mm and 75mm anti tank guns... as russian armor becme larger and tougher, they shifted to the 75 for the tank gun, 88 for anti tank, then 105, for anti-tank. But 88's and 105's were to heavy to move around teh battlefield by hand... heck the 75 was to heavy... so they put them on tracked chassies. The US, UK, and even Russians did the same.

Truly though, the Pz.Sfl.IVa "Dicker Max", the little brother of the "Sturer Emil" how I like to think about it, was and is better in almost every aspect other than the Guns ammo. Not to mention that the Dicker Max is one of my alltime favourite tanks, maybe solely outdone by the FV4202 and Waffenträger series.

It seems like the problem was that this was more a self-propelled gun than a tank destroyer; i.e., it was meant to blast bunkers to smithereens, so it's mobility issues weren't a big deal against a non-moving target. By the time these two prototypes got into action, though, France had been already beaten; so they were already out of a job. Sure, with that oversized 12.8 cm cannon, and able to fire from positions on the Russian steppes, one of these "Sturer Emil" vehicles could pick off enemy armor at very long engagement ranges; but it seems it'd likewise, getting away from it's mobility and reliability issues, it'd be an easy target for enemy artillery.
@edi98922 жыл бұрын
I do think that enemies could kill that tank at this range, as the armour was rather negligible. However, I think that what kept them safe was that they had better optics whereas the enemies were never intended to engage at such ranges. Also, the tank can be more behind cover than many other tanks and had a good gun depression which can be exploited in uneven terrain.
