3:30 I've been told that, when asked why Kirby was so bad in Melee, Sakurai said that it was because fans of 64 kept claiming that Kirby was powerful because of favouritism, and some even confronted him about it. He made sure to make Kirby as awful as possible so that it would never happen again.

Z/L-cancelling was added because the devs wanted players to be able to use a defensive option really quickly after using an attempt. The original purpose was just shielding, but players realized if you tapped the button quickly, you would have the reduced lag but not be stuck in shield.

Sakurai made a post talking about L-cancelling in 64. It's to look cool. It's even called "smooth landing".

For Coney, Z-Cancelling is actually referred as a technique in the original Smash 64 manual also called smooth landing. This was implemented into Melee but there wasn’t any actual documentation into the game whatsoever on L-cancelling, so no it’s not am accident.

I'm sorry, this may be a hot take, but I find absolutely hilarious the idea of someone intensely sweating as they input perfect down-taunts in an infinite loop for 20 minutes, never breaking character until the tension in the room is about to break, the trivial nature of a casual match of friendlies rapidly dissolving into a wild conflict, and then the guy's just like "lmao jk"

I think Z-cancelling was intended to make getting into shield after an aerial quicker, they just didn't expect people to press it and then not shield afterwards.

Smash 64 is fun, but it's also very difficult to play, as you're constantly fighting with the controls. It might even be better to play via an emulator where you can use a more modern controller. Most N64 controllers are pretty beat up so movement becomes difficult (because you probably destroyed the analog stick playing Mario Party lol). But it IS something I recommend trying out if you're a youngin' who wasn't around when it came out :) I still remember seeing the original commercial with the Turtles song playing, and I fell in love with the franchise after convincing my grandma to let us rent it back in 1999.

Not gonna lie, my favorite thing about Smash 64 all these years later is how fucking dangerous it is. No air dodging, no spot dodging, you can get put in block-stun for like a thousand years before you can do anything else, grabs are insane, some moves do stupid amounts of knockback compared to the later games and all this and more creates a game where one mistake has a high chance of killing you regardless of your damage percentage.

Brawl minus was actually the first platfighter I played competitively. Modern brawl minus is very different from what is in this vid. For example wario is based around pressing buttons a second time to fart boost. Wario also has his full waft on up b, and normal full waft is replaced with a rolling crate which wario can ride on

I have played every installment in the Smash-Series, and Even tho i am not a Pro, i feel That every smash has its Kind of charm to it. Smash 64 with its Doll-graphics and OGs, Melee With its Brutal engine and speed, Brawl and its story Mode/(i really enjoy Brawl Doubles), Smash 4 With Miis, amiibos and Unbalanced trash (my Cousin and I used to Play Random with Costum moves and Badges, and it was hilarious.) and Smash Ultimate With its Amount of Chars and Spirits and World of Light

Reminds me of someone who I went over to their house and played them in starcraft, and he got SO MAD when he just couldn't win. He would give up so easily too, the moment anything bad started happening to his base or if he lost a few units he would just give up. The guy was just so mad at himself and started yelling so loudly at himself, kept repeating things like "I SUCK" "IM THE WORST PLAYER EVER" things like that over and over, made things so awkward, I had to just leave at some point after he had a particularly nasty tantrum after one game. Yup, melle, brawl, 64, 4, and ultimate were all broken as hell, Atleast ultimate got updated and got fixed by them putting sora and sans in it.
