The bird sound is made using a glass slide. In the 70 the Confederate flag was a symbol of unity for the south. People of all colors flew it. Even as late as 2005 when my wife and me traveled the south we sold beaded jewelry. One thing we made were Confederate flag earrings. We sold as many to black women as white. Only a minority of people used it as a racist symbol. As far as Skynnyd goes I dont know of a racist song they ever did and their music is celebrated by people of all races. This can be seen by watching many of the people that play tributes to them. Truth is music is really colorless.

Southerners of all races still display the battle flag(square flag) or in this case the confederate navy jack(rectangular version that csa naval vessals flew). The use of this flag by racists is a blasphemy of its symbolism.

They were working class kids from Jacksonville, Fl. They 'took" their named from a gym teacher-ex-Marine at their high school (named Leonard Skinner) who told them to stop being hippies and cut their hair in the late 60s. The guitar player said "FU" to the teacher and quit school. They're now legends. That's awesome.

The band in a documentary I watched claimed they weren't racist at all, but when they played England the English called them Yankees. And they took offense & said he'll no we're from the South. The record label MCA started putting the confederate flag everywhere, on the stage & album covers. In the 70's the confederate flag seemed to symbolize the South more than the out & out racism meaning of today. The Dukes of Hazzard tv show in the 70's & 80's, the Dodge charger in the show had a confederate flag on the roof, but the Duke boys seemed to be the only ones in the county that ever helped black people.

Loved your words on the confederate flag. While I am from the north and it has never meant anything to me, I was mad that people tried (successfully) cancelling the "Dukes of Hazzard" over it. There was nothing racist in that show, besides the lack of local diversity that should have been present, but that was the case in most of Hollywood shows at that point. If anything the Dukes of Hazzard may have done an above average (for the time) job of it. For the most part, black people seemed to be well presented when they were there, and were sometimes even the featured star of the week. Of course, overall the Dukes of Hazzard is not of any real importance, but it does suck that a bit of fun, harmless pop culture from that time got ripped away for no good reason.

So many people associate the Confederate Flag with racism, yet it has nothing to do with racism. The Confederate Flag is about heritage and culture. Unfortunately, some of the people of that heritage and culture are racists. So when people see the Confederate Flag, they assume that the person with it is racist. The funny thing is, I have seen A LOT of black people with it. They have it because they understand that the flag itself is not a symbol of racism, it is a symbol of heritage and culture. Those are the educated people. The uneducated people are the ones who associate it with racism. I wish more people would learn about it, so they know what it actually represents ( it is not racism ).

"I wasn't ready!" LMAO Hold onto your hat man, you ain't seen nothing yet. I got the pleasure of seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert a couple of years ago. My wife bought tickets for my birthday. Awesome birthday present!! But, one thing you can be sure of, if you were there to enjoy the music, you would have had the time of your life.

To many (southerners, westerners and northerners as well as outside the US) the confederate flag is a symbol of a person doing their own thing their way without the government saying do this or that. I fly a US and a Confederate battle flag in my yard, and yet I have many friends of various backgrounds and descents, all have put their hats in their hands and feet under my table.

I watched about 20 or 30 Reaction Videos for "Free Bird", and IMHO you did the best job. Most are so blown away they can't speak. One small point: You should have known when the crowd started going wild after being so calm during the vocal section, the song was changing.

This was Southern rock and I'm from the South. I saw them do this at Memorial (football) Stadium in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! Things were different then and in many ways a lot more fun. You probably know by now the band was in a plane crash 3 months after this concert. Oh, by the way, I saw Led Zeppelin in Raleigh in 1970and that was the best concert my 71 yo ass ever saw! I'm looking forward to watching more of your reactions.

These guys RIGHTLY were proud of the confederacy for all the right reasons. They were not even slightly racist. Listen to The Ballad of Curtis Loew ! The guitar in the beginning is whistling like a "Freebird" !

I was at that show. Johnny Winter was the next band.. incredible show. Oakland Rocks. Back in the 70's the confederate flag was a symbol of limited government and personal freedom from government. It has been morphed over the last 40 years into what is today. California was all about as much freedom as possible back then. The rebel flag was everywhere. Boy has that shifted. Seems like California wants nothing to do with freedom anymore. Great reaction BTW. Hey just for you. I went to a Spinners and Temptations show a week later. Great show! Not a lot of palefaces there. Lol

It was almost 10 min on album, record company & producers said song too long for radio play. The guys said that is how we play it & abt 48 yrs they still play it on the radio on a regular basis! Hey I went to see Richard Pryor in 70's & we said we felt like marshmallows in a cup of hot chocolate. Lol we loved Richard Pryor!

Normal it is around 9 minutes, the long versions go till 12:30 or so... some claim they battle with the guitars till today... :) Best and longest high quality guitar "solo"/Battle in music history. Period. Oh, listen to Ballad of Curtis Loew.... they also had the blues...

Confederate flag isn’t a “racist” flag. Today’s age is way different than back then. Even in the 70s it wasn’t viewed to be a “racial” flag.

Sir you are correct about all the white people, but if you watch closely you will see many people of color. Watch your video here at 1558 minutes and you can see. Back in this era, the majority of black folks just listen to a different style of music, such as blues and soul. I too, listen to many soul artist. It is GREAT music. Isn’t it great how music can touch the heart of so many lifestyles of human beings? Good reaction. Almost up there with mr. Video. 😋

I am sure someone let you know but slide guitar making that sound, if you watch him real carefully you can tell. Not a sound you hear often supposed to sound like a bird. It is a sea of white people but with open minded people like you willing to listen to something different maybe you will open some eyes to the spund of good old southern music. For the record, they weren't racists at all. Back to us back then it just meant you were from the south & proud of it, nothing more. Liked your reaction, I am with you, loved way we dressed back then, bell bottoms but my fav was elephant bells. That's the maaterpiece of Freebird it is like 2 songs bridged together
