Allen Collins, the tall, lanky guitarist that plays the ripping lead at the end of the song, wrote the music to Freebird when he was only 17 or 18 years old, and all these years later it's still considered one of greatest iconic rock songs of all time Think about that, the music to Freebird written by a teenager and lyrics written by a lead singer in Ronnie Van Zant, while a high school dropout, he was also truly a musical genius. Of all of that great catalog of Skynyrd classics, Van Zant never wrote any of his lyrics down. He kept everything only in his head, always insisting to the other guys in the band that if a song "ain't worth remembering then it ain't worth playing."

Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister) and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick were the ones who died in the crash, which broke up the band for 10 tears. The surviving members reformed in 1987. Crash survivors Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Artimus Pyle, along with guitarist Ed King, who had left the band two years before the crash joined with Ronnie Van Zants younger brother Johnny. There have been other deaths and personnel changes over the years but Gary Rossington and Johnny Van Zant are still carrying on as Lynrd Skynrd and doing a farewell tour this year.

Tragically sad that guitarist Gaines, and lead singer Van Zant died just 110 days after this concert in that plane crash. That group was never the same just a few months later. Dude, you GOT to watch the 1976 Knebworth, England version because you see the entire solo at the end and it shows the whole song. The Oakland 1977 version cuts out a good chunk of the guitar solo( 1-2 minutes) and it shows way too much of the crowd for my taste. And to this day it is pretty much assured that at some point during virtually any Rock concert anywhere in the United States, somebody somewhere is going to eventually yell out "FREEBIRD"! the song is not only a classic, it has become synonymous with rock and roll itself.

Ronnie the lead singer and song writer passed in the crash. His little brother now sings for the group. He looks and sounds really close to Ronnie. Along with Ricky Medlock (Blackfoot) on guitar, they are a can't miss if they are playing anywhere near you.

I'm so pleased to see Beautiful Genuine Reactions for my favorite band and I was there 11 years old down 3rd base line. Couldn't see much, but heard it. Wish the time back machine would transport me right now. Thanks bro

Steve Gaines died in the plane crash along with lead singer and songwriter Ronnie VanZant, Cassie Gaines, Steve's sister and a backup singer, their assistant road manager and both pilots. That was in 1977. Alan Collins, the guy in white, became a paraplegic in 1986 during a car accident which killed his wife. He died in 1990 from pneumonia. Gary Rossington, the guy with the "red velvet cake hair," is the only original member in the reformed band.

I really enjoyed that reaction. Not just the video, which is above and beyond classic, but your after commentary. The fact you didn't mention the rebel flag gave me a lot of respect to this review. On a side note, the instruments those guys played are worth a fortune today, not just because they played them, but they are vintage Gibson instruments.

Who lived: The guy playing the red SG slide, the drummer, the piano player, the guy in the white, the bassist. Two of the three backup singers lived. ..But they all never died. God bless you, Singer. You're good people. Love ya much.
