Our ability to follow-through on our resolutions - to get into a new habit - may have a simple and easy solution. Christine Carter, Ph.D., is an author, speaker, and coach. Her books include The New Adolescence: Raising Happy and Successful Teens in an Age of Anxiety and Distraction (2020), The Sweet Spot: How to Accomplish More by Doing Less(2017) and Raising Happiness: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents (2011). A sociologist and senior fellow at UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, Carter draws on the latest scientific research in psychology, sociology, and neuroscience to help her clients lead their most meaningful, joyful, and productive lives. She lives with her husband, four teenagers, and dog Buster in Marin County, California. What I learned from this: You have to be willing to be bad at something. Doing little (like a 1-minute run) when it's a bad day is MUCH better than nothing.

Yessssssssssssss!! I have been saying something similar for years (because it works for me). When I was in college (around 13 years ago), I was a case study in a college tips book. In that book, I talked about "tricking myself into doing the work." I would tell myself to "just write one paragraph of my essay" or "just read one page of my textbook"...and it always worked!

Routine is everything. You only realize that when you lose it. Then you find out how hard it is to get it back. And then? Omg, how you regret letting it go in the first place! There's a science behind that. If it's a routine you don't have to think about it, so you can use your mental energy on other things. The more things fit into the routine category, the more you can get done automatically, without thinking about it.. So yeah, don't let that vacation, or that shelter in place, go on for so long that you lose your routines. Youll regret it!

Thank you so much for sharing your personal life in these days of a difficult time for the world. You're right good exercises are good for the health. Awesome thought: Be alright, be humble to start even if you start as bad (beginner). I can totally relate. I had a bad on & off habit of getting into an exercise routine. Now it developed as my routine not only to be fit but because i respect my body to keep it strong, alive and most of all happy. 😊

365 bike commuter now working from home. I thought it would be just as easy as staying to the same habit: ride my bike before I clock in then ride my bike again when I clock out. That turned out to be extremely difficult. The motivation of getting somewhere was gone. I do need that carrot, that reason for doing. I set up an indoor trainer and signed up for Sufferfest. It's helping me achieve my goals and giving me structure. Nothing is easy but all about breaking things into manageable pieces.

SioLazer I'm 60+ & have used a bike for transportation for more than 20 years. I'm sure I never rode as far or as often as you, but since I have no car this is the only way I get around. I've also noticed that riding since covid is much harder b/c so many places are closed & so there is no goal or reason to ride. But I need to force myself or my joints will freeze. Happy riding to you!

@@pamelaminor696 I totally understand! Movement has also brought me a lot of relief. We used to get our groceries by bike unless it was just absolutely dumping rain. We have had to stop because the space for us to have our bikes is overwhelmed with people waiting to get inside. So much to look forward to when we can get back to normal.

This is true, it works!. Three years ago I started exercising less than five minutes every day before my morning shower, it was so easy to keep at it!. Today I'm working out at least 30 minutes a day, six days a week doing high intensity workouts (high intensity for me); and it doesn't even cross my mind to skip one.

Motivation is harder as I grow older. Also, as a full-time caregiver for my husband and teaching online my daily focus is on them and less on me. “Better than nothing” habit is a new mindset for me. I’m going to be less than an overachiever and just be more of a “habit expander”.

I don't exercise because it is one of the most boring activities I can imagine. At least the ones I did both at home, gym or outdoors and that includes running, weightlifting, training videos (insanity etc) The only times I did exercise was when I was joining the dating pool or twice before going on big holidays abroad and wanted to "look good" on pictures. I'm more successful at losing weight by simply not eating more than I need but I would prefer to look "nice and tight" if you know what I mean.
