A lot of people say appreciate the healthcare workers, appreciate the Nurses. But when they are actual patients or the accompanying family member, they always demand why am I waiting so Long. At outpatient clinics we already see a lot of demanding people with unrealistic expectations, what more to say at the emergency department. No wonder a lot of Nurses burnt out. Nurses don’t need our claps, they just need more understanding and patience with them.

Welcome to our first world country but third world mindset. As someone who have worked in one of the frontline sector before, I had met my fair share of entitled people. Some would be unreasonable, demanding and even to the point that they would insult me for doing my job. It is easy for people to say as if they understand the frontliners and how they feel. But unless you are in their shoes, you can never understand how they truly feel. Money and appreciation arent everything, I would forgo some of the overtime incentives and take a beak from work if it would help my mental health. Hence I must say having worked in the frontline before makes me appreciate their works even more and am more understanding to them. They are there to help us so why make their job even harder than they already are.

Unable to tolerate pain & fear of death make people behave irrationally. Few people think about or prepare for death while they are younger & healthier, that is the reason why I applied for MOH's Advance Medical Directive to request that no extra-ordinary medical procedures to keep me alive. My 89 yr old father on the other hand is the direct opposite, he has had a hernia for years that has progressively gotten worse. Everytime he can't stand the pain, the ambulance is called to bring him to the hospital where he will remain for a day or 2, then demands to be discharged. The doctors have repeatedly advised him to undergo an operation, but he refuses. So he panics whenever the pain becomes unbearable... scared of pain, & he is scared of dying on the operation table. This is what happens when one isn't prepared to accept reality, it has become such a strain on those around him. I have severed my ties with him.

Hi Jack, put aside the comparison to the ministers; nurses in Singapore are not well compensated to nurses in other developed countries like US, Canada, Australia. They say rising healthcare costs; it never goes to the nurses. The pay increase announced this year for nurses; it’s negligible and; long, long, long overdue. Nurses don’t need to be called heroes; receive applause etc. They do what they do because it’s their job. What they do need is a comparable salary compensation to their peers from other faculties in the universities. Find out what an FASS degree holder earns entry level and what a nursing degree holder earns entry level. And to their the latter has specialised skills. Food for thought.

At that time I was helping another patient with her medication and went to him as soon as I could. What he said really made me upset and understand why my friends want to quit. We come into each shift everyday with just one aim which is to do our best to help each and every one of our patients. We always do our best but are still some people that take us for granted. Honeslty I do not think that it's very fair to do that to someone that is doing their best to take care of you but this is what I signed up for so I never complained and just live with it. How can this be a new issue? Even before the pandemic started, hasn't anyone stepped into the polyclinic or hospital & noticed the writing on the wall "We ask that our staff be treated with courtesy & respect, as how you would like to be treated." People sometimes allow their emotions to cloud their rationale. Nurses & doctors are human beings too, just like us but people seem to think that they are super human beings. Had a friend who was unhappy that her operation was postponed because the doctor took a leave of absence, so I posed a question to my friend "would you want a tired doctor to be operating on you? Just because you are in pain, everything & anyone else don't matter!" It would be wise if people learnt to put their emotions aside occasionally.

When the pandemic started, many nurses quit straight away because schools closed & there were no alternative child- or student-care arrangements, so they had to remain home to care for their kids. Secondly, the shortage of PPE made many fear for their lives, so they quit. They were so short of nursing staff that the Governor had to sign & approve non-nursing staff to takeover nursing duties, this is so that should any patient die under the care of untrained staff, the families can't sue the hospital &/or staff. The one thing every country needs is a seasonal standby nurse. Whereby when there's a pandemic/endemic, these nurses will be call to work at the hospital. During non or pre-pandemic season or days these nurses will go back to their training. So this now nurses will have more time to care for patient and nurses dont feel stress working in the hospital

They live from experience and practice, you can't get them on and off. What you could do is ask ex-nurses who are not out for too long to come back at least for part-time. But from my experience the systems in Singapore are not very flexible. What a shame dismissing all their skill.

I think its about damn time we give some actual welfare for the nurses. MORE PAY BETTER WORKPLACE TREATMENT A stronger union representation Case and example: SG nurse gets paid only SGD 60 for doing an extra shift. They work 6 shifts a week, and sometimes they do two shifts in one day (AM, 7-3PM and Nightshift 8PM-7AM) In the US and Australia, nurses get paid USD 400 for one extra shift, and they only work 3 days a week. Nurses there get to stand up for any form of mistreatment towards them, while here, they get threatened. CONTEXT AND MORE INFO ARE IMPT, BUT FACTS AND NUMBERS ARE SIMPLE AS THAT. If Singapore doesn't do something about this soon. Honestly, the number of nurses resigning is only going to rise. As it should.
