Hey CBell! Video idea for u, a little twist for the odd man out series. Odd man out but they’re all the odd man out. I’ll give u an example. U take 8 plats and u tell all of them that they’re the odd man out and that they’re trying to blend in with the different ranked players. But In reality, they’re not blending in with a different rank, they’re going against plats who ALL think they’re the odd man out in a different ranked lobby. I think one of the problems in the experiment was that you told the confident rank that they were playing the rank above them and told the non-confident rank that they were playing the rank below them. That in itself takes away and gives confidence respectively.

This experiment is done wrong imo, you should put the same ranks against each other from both ends of the confidence spectrum and then if you get a lot of results you can see if confidence makes any difference or if it ends up 50:50, this just proved that ranks in rocket league work as they should XD.

The problem is that insecure players are not sure of victory only up to a big advantage or before probing the ground. It is worth going ahead by 2-3 goals - they are confident of victory. For a perfect comparison of this challenge, it was necessary to immediately give confident players a gap of 3 goals.

I think your theory might work in a different way. Players with high confidence would be lower ranked if they lacked confidence, and players who are not that confident would rank up if they gained confidence. So maybe it even makes sense to put a lower ranked unconfident players against higher-ranked confident players(although unconfident ones would have to become confident rather quickly to be able to compete)

The rank someone has at the moment is a better metric for their ability to win games then their confidence. However it might be more interesting to compare the learning ability of those two mindsets or characteristics. You could take a confident and not so confident person at the same rank, give them the same training regimen and check how they improved over the same period of time (like elo improvement per game played). you could also use other characteristics than confidence like age (young vs old), toxicity (toxic vs wholesome). That might make a more interesting video. With this video the outcome was already determined in the beginning.

8-12 division (about 2-3 rank) makes a lot of difference between ranks skill sets that's why rocket league has so many smurfs. If you don't fight for it until the last second even if you are 4-0 losing, you can't climb up in the ladders. If you fight for it, you can even beat some smurfs if the smurf is single solo or carrying a low rank friend, because it's hard to carry people if you are not playing against at least 3-4 rank (12-16 div) lower than you. If you can't beat people that 2 rank higher than you at least, you can't climb in ranks, that's why some of these people are overconfident, they match againsts too many smurfs in a day. As a diamond 2-3, I often see people who has "champion tournament winner" titles and I was never seen and participated in champion tournament before. And those golds probably match against plat tournament winners and plats match against diamond smurfs. If you don't try to carry a low rank friend, it's almost impossible to lose more than two rank even if you don't play for 6 months. Climbing is not for forfeiters especially when there is so many smurfs around.

Im a little late, but the idea is good but I think it could've been better executed. For example, the whole point is based on confidence however was kind of "contaminated" by them knowing its fully about confidence and that the other team is non confident as that causes fake confidence just for the video. Additionally, the biggest thing out of all of it, is I think it would've been better to not tell each team what the ranks were. This caused the "confident" team to probably feel a lot less confident because they know they are going against better players and the "non-confident" team more confidence because they know they are going against worse players. regardless, was a fun video to watch!

I think your theory was correct, but the issue is that the skill nerf from not being confident is built in. A champ 2 that plays with low confidence has the skill of a... champ 2. Maybe the interesting thing to test would be how much boosting someone's confidence improves their skill.

Ik I'm replying to an old comment, but I think it has less to do with confidence affecting skill and more confidence affecting how often a player actually goes for shots, and what they will do with the ball at that point. No matter the rank a confident player will be on the ball more often and looking for goals, while an unconfident player might be holding back a little and looking for corner or passing plays. As you said a C2 that has low confidence still has the skill of a C2.

confidence doesnt make that big of a difference if it is between different ranks, but it makes a difference in the same ranks, e.g. im an unconfident plat, and when i play against other plats that are more confident, i usually do quite a lot worse than them, but if im up against confident golds, the gap between skill is too far to really factor in confidence as a whole

You should do this again, but tell both sides that they’re going against the same rank and you’re just testing if confidence gives an advantage if the ranks are equal. That way the higher ranks will be nervous (in this video they should be more confident than usual because they know they are playing inferior opponents) and the lower ranks will be confident because they think they are going against equally skilled players
