I think a lot of people are getting wise to this. Luxury doesn’t equal quality, and for some people that was never as important as the label, but a lot of people thought they were getting something well made. I got a $20 bag off Amazon that feels sturdier than the $800 original. That’s a problem for the original brand, but they did this to themselves.

@@jennypaxton8159 Years ago I remember reading somewhere that the reason why there ewre some superfakes that were at the same level as the designer bags was because they were manufactured in the same factories and with the same materials/labels as the real one. And the older I get, the more I realize there was truth there. The wealthy are finding even higher level and wealthier brands, and are now doing the vintage shopping because it's more of a one-kind. They will always one-up plebs. But those of us that were upper middle class that could afford a bag over a couple of years of work or saving, have realized they are the same shit as other brands.

My parents recently went to Italy and brought back for my sister and I, the most beautiful leather handbags with impeccable stitching and craftsmanship straight out of the street marketplace! They are unbranded and made in Italy and the quality is absolutely beautiful. That doesn't surprise me. Most people are obsessed with labels not quality. I found a gorgeous made in Italy bag at a thrift store one year. It had initials on it and I was googling to find out how do I 'erase' someone else's initials. So, a light bulb went off in my head and I contacted the company direct. They wanted me to send the bag back to them and they would 'erase' them and redo the gold trim on the bag! The bag was made in the late 50s to early 60s and everything on that bag was stellar! Such high quality. So, I sent them the bag and they sent it back minus the initials and new gold trim. It's so gorgeous! Better than that, no one else has one.

It's the end of corporate luxury - mass produced with cheap labor, bad quality, sold at exorbitant prices, because we think the famous brand means quality. It used to, before the corporate owners betrayed us. Now, luxury I think its small independent brands, I know one in Singapore called Thomaswee, where every garment is made by the designer himself and 2 assistants and the pieces produced are so small in number, because they just don't have the ability to make more. I'm sure such designers/brands exist in many countries, where's there's just one shop and not available on line. Exclusivity, actual rarity and not mass produced is the new luxury. And the prices are realistic, based partly on how much it actually cost to make, because their not charging for international advertising, celebrities, magazine covers, rental space etc like corporate fashion.

Dacob, you are right, for me, the spark is gone. I just returned from Mexico and visited the Chanel, LV, and Hermes boutiques, me and my husband were the only customers. This echoes what I've been seeing in my local boutiques. Earlier this year I visited my local boutique in Boca Raton, FL, inside Saks, we were the only customers among about 5-6 SA's; I was looking for an SLG, and told the SA that SLG's are my weakness as I was about to leave since they didn't have the item I was looking for. His eyes lit up and put the rope across the entrance in an effort to keep me in the store. He returned to the counter and started to pull out trays upon trays of SLGs. I was so shocked to see that many SLGs available. I left without buying anything. I momentarily felt bad for the SA because they too are feeling the brunt of Chanel's greed and carelessness with how they treat their customers....anyway, I enjoyed your video, per usual 😊

Love your channel Dacob! It’s the same here in London. The Bond Street boutiques are much quieter and Harrods is super empty during the week. Initially I assumed it this was largely due to the UK no longer offering VAT rebates to tourists since Brexit. However, I was in Paris this summer and LVMH’s La Samaritaine was dead. We were one of the handful of customers in the store so were able to get a table for lunch with no queue, very quick service and a prixe fixe lunch menu! Yet, we had to queue the day before to get a table at galleries Lafayette because many people are looking for somewhere with air conditioning in the middle of summer. So the aircon alone should have been enough to bring more people into the store. Interestingly, there were still queues every day outside Goyard on Rue Honore. So there are still plenty of people that will pay for luxury. However, in London and Paris it seems to mostly be tourists from Asia and the Middle East that are purchasing. Perhaps because there’s still a bit of a saving to buy in Europe compared to prices in other regions (even without the VAT rebate). The quiet luxury trend continues to lead here. I am noticing more of the fashion conscious purchasing IYKYK brands and opting for quality over logos. Another commenter has mentioned the price increases also add a safety consideration. This is very true! Ten years ago colleagues would be wearing Chanel totes and luxury watches to the office. Since lockdown this is far less common. Even those that are not struggling financially don’t want to appear to be flaunting and certainly don’t want to be a walking target for thieves.

I think the pandemic also opened the eyes of consumers to how important liquidity and having better investments are. As the prices continue to rise, it makes less sense to put your hard earned money (even if you have it made), towards purchases that have lost their luster as "luxury" in terms of consumerism. Notably, luxury continues to fade becoming a relic of a different era. Since Covid we learned overnight that true luxury is being financially secure, healthy, and at peace. A Chanel bag didn't provide much solace back then and less now at 2 or 3 times the price. Chanel seems to have lost the plot.

For the Hollywood reference, it reminds me of Joan Crawford being called black office poison in the 30s. I agree with new products being meh, its reflective to most brands, no point buying these items new anymore. But pre loved/second hand have problems with authenticity, we consumers can never win

"In 2023, the Wertheimer brothers, the owners of Chanel, received a $5.7 billion dividend from the luxury brand, which was the largest annual payout in the company's history. This was part of a total of $12.4 billion in payouts over the previous three years." They cashed out and now that Karl is gone, some magic has been lost, and they don't care.

People are losing interest in designer brands overall. This past weekend I was the at Desert Hills Premium Outlets and the stores were FULL of merchandise from past collections. Fendi had an additional 30% and 40% many items. Burberry was full of sales - especially on RTW. Even Prada and YSL had tons of bags I have seen in store.

F*** Chanel! I’m completely done with this brand. With the multiple price increases and quality issues I know that owing a CC bag is out of my range. I was however willing to pay over $800 Canadian for a pouch. Crazy when my Coach Empire bag cost less than that. I figured this may be the only Chanel bag/slg that I will own so let me do this now. Well to find out today that Chanel does not provide payment links and their fashion products other than sunglasses are not available for purchase online…only in store. The closest store to me is two hours away. So I’m officially done with this brand including makeup and perfume.

The way this is going soon perfume and beauty products will become unusable as well. This is very sad. Chanel was a hold out for quality, at least in terms of Les Exclusifs.

The perfume thing is real. I went to Sephora and smelled Dior Sauvage EDP, and it was nothing like I remembered. It was extremely light, and almost impossible to smell. Moreover, my clone made by Afnan "Modest Une" smells identical, yet extremely strong and long lasting.

They definitely outpriced themselves, but have you seen the preloved market lately?! It’s outrageous, the price for a preloved medium sized flap is around 10 k 💵 it’s insane. The hype around investment is beyond my comprehension, Chanel and Hermes are overpriced brands, there are other brands out there that have better quality and value in my opinion. Thank you Dacob for always delivering the best KZbin content 👏🏻👍🏻♥️♥️♥️

There used to be something exciting about luxury goods - now it is too oversaturated to be special (and the high prices do not make it special).

I tried to buy a $7000 bag from them at their online store. They would not let me buy it because I had never been inside the store. So I decided to go online and found a $99 fake that looks exactly like it. I saved $6,900 because they made it so hard to buy a bag.

I never was into Chanel until Karl Lagerfeld became the designer. When he passed away, I lost interest again. I’m not surprised their quality is not there. There are other designers that provide the style, design, and quality. Some are up and coming designers.

They raised the prices too high, too fast. Just like an over-priced house that sits on the market forever. They are kind of stuck. It breaks my heart. One of my goals in life was getting a classic flap because it is iconic Coco and Paris and Lagerfeld. I still treasure it, but at $8800, ugh.

The magic is gone, but more than anything, it feels like disrespect. The lack of service, the declining quality, and the ever increasing prices in the face of a declining economy makes the aspiring clientele feel unwanted and even makes their wealthier clientele feel like idiots for buying this crap. Their constant profit seeking is ruining the brand and Chanel’s legacy.

The new season show was very not wonderful...the worst was the front double slit skirts and the bunched up (because of poor tailoring" waists in the jackets.....and the cheap looking sheer fabric on some of the summer casual "shorts" outfit...quiet a mess all along the show

Went to Chanel a few times in the past few months on Rodeo Dr. Yes they have dozens of bags lingering around in the cabinet that are not selling. Also there was a bag that I liked a lot however the material liner inside the bag looked cheap, the clasp was weird and the pull through and looked tarnished and leaned to one side. Looked sewn incorrectly. Staff was weird about letting you look around upstairs and and the sales associate kept trying to push bags on me that I had no interest in yet the bag I liked he didn't want to give me information on ( a display 22 on the upper level in Flamingo Pink). Weird vibes in that store. I bought a Chanel 22, a Cruise tote a continental wallet, Chanel loafers and 4 pairs of sunglasses last year probably around 25K-30K last year. I am not buying any more Chanel. Quality and exclusivity is no longer there.

Hi i will tell you my story ..Probably 10 years ago when The boy chanel flap was so in we when to chanel to see one my husband wanted to buy me one he liked a look ..we when in she show us a burgundy color he was saying how nice it’s look but we open it and i felt i exactly tell you what i said what to hell this bag it’s feel so cheap so bad made coach bag make better quality..i opens look like a box just hade some cheap material on top ..i told him you know what i don’t want it i don’t feel like paying so much money for nothing only for a label i expect more from brands ..i buy luxury clothes but i buy material not a brand label ..And that different people are focusing on label and they missing a quality if is a clothing or bags or shoes ..And now people are buys to impress..i don’t want to impress and be a slave of this big billion dollars company puppet..if you want to impress i feel we can do differently with our individually and that why i just don’t choose this trend even if i can buy we financially comfortable..that my feelings and i’m so glad people are stop following and brainwashed..

They seem to like it so much, I think they should just do a 10x price raise and call it a day. I’m not giving them a penny, they can raise their price as high as they like til their heart’s content. I couldn’t care less. Their ruthless greed is their problem, not my problem.

I sold my last Chanel flap at a consignment store and it was lying in the shelves for months. Nobody wants this anymore. Too much on the market and it’s nothing special anymore with all the super fakes and vintage on the markets. I rather invest in the stock market and travel. Luxury is dead 💀
