My own brothers said they’d vote for Biden over Trump if Biden were cryogenically frozen, and I believe them. I don’t even know what to say to that. They’re both smart enough (and middle class enough) to know what living conditions were like under both presidents, yet they still believe “fine people, suckers and losers, and inject bleach,” and now they believe that the president can attack the U.S. and be immune from prosecution. I do agree though, when my older brother pointed out, “No matter what I say, you’d believe the media is somehow telling blatant lies to make Trump look bad.” When I say that’s exactly what I believe because it’s provable, I get the “Occam’s razor,” line: what’s more likely, that Trump’s the worst president in recent history who said all these things or the majority of media apparatuses and pundits are conspiring to make him look bad through lies and propaganda and bad edits. I agree that it would be easier to just report facts rather than have people cutting up videos, cutting off speeches, or outright lying, but that’s not been the media’s agenda for decades. At that point, I’m just a conspiracy theorist because of “how difficult it would be to pull that off and to successfully dupe so many people with outright nonsense.” It didn’t happen overnight. It happened over time, and I fell for it up until my late 20s. Only in having a genuine curiosity for those who thought differently did I realize that I was, in fact, being duped, and not totally by what was being reported but by how much was NOT being reported. Stats and figures that told a completely different story from what I was being told. Long form interviews with people to whom I’d have normally turned a blind eye rather than hear them get shouted down and cut off by brief appearances on news shows. It’s amazing what simply listening to multiple sides of a story can do if one is willing to tread the waters of curiosity.
