Wait don’t you usually post another video before getting back to the main subject. I think making a video on Yom Kippur and posting a video on Confucianism right after while talking about Heaven will cause too much confusion. You should take into account that most will mistakenly mix up the Chinese concept of Heaven and the Abrahamic god. You should be more mindful about this. You should’ve at least posted another religion topic before getting back to Confucianism

Confucius place merchants below farmers and craftsmen. Because according to him, merchants dont produce anything to the state. The merchants he talked about was peddlers selling and buying goods from one place to another. While as peasants produce food that is vital to the state. It doesnt have anything to do with social class. It just show confucius value farmers more than travelling merchants.

4:27 Sounds similar to Japan's attempt to utilise Shinto as a national ideology. Japanese scholars argued that Christianity was often used to subvert populations and render countries more vulnerable to colonialism. Some believed that Japan needed its own 'national structure' in order to unify the state and strengthen it against foreign influence. Like in China, the Japanese also wanted to downgrade other traditions including Buddhism. Also like in China, the version of Shinto promoted by the state was different to the version of the religion which had historically been practiced.

It is. The 'renaissance' of Confucianism doesn't come from any kind of real advances, adaptations of the key philosophy under modern context, but rather as a means of an authoritarian push to the society as an ideological collar to be placed on the new generation. It's basically in the exact same context of how conservative Christians in the US say the country needs to "go back to its Christian values". . Confucianism, ultimately 'ordains' the state/legal authority of the people on the condition that the state and the system serve as a medium to guide the people toward a better life, as an agent of the heaven. When that purposed is corrupted into a justification of power for personal greed, the state loses the Mandate of Heaven, and is just grounds for the people to rise up and overthrow the government. --- the "renaissance" version of Chinese Confucian propaganda simply "CENSORS" this part to the people.

Well at least in Japan when they're showing Shintoism on anime they didn't promote nationalistic and religious extremism on it and most of them have a blend of Westernization/modernist stories. In the case of China since the production of their anime series about the life of Confucius, it was blended with political propaganda from the CCP as part of their power grabbing and ultra-nationalistic awakening to the Chinese people just like some of their Chinese media platform, and that's alarming just like what Japan did during World War 2

@@wazzup233 You need to go back over a century. The Japanese state Theo's talking about was modelling itself on the developing fascist tendencies in Europe, and the nationalisation of Shinto was a central part of that. This process led to the monstrous Japanese regime of the 1930s.

Fun fact: China had a period where they were debating about having a Confucian legal system vs a Legalist legal system. The Confucians and the Legalists mainly differed on whether and how much morals should play into the application of law. For example, the Legalists would say "Theft is theft." and give you a sentence, but the Confucians would ask "What did you steal? A book? That's an elegant crime. No punishment"

Confucius had a good premise: the leaders must exemplify goodness or they cannot expect goodness from the people, and it is better to be good than evil, because it results in more happiness and less hassle. Unfortunately, this logic only works if enough people are truly moved by its message and want to dedicate themselves to its practice, possibly at their own profits’ expense. I’ve long grappled with the “What is our basic human nature?” question. It is shaped by our cultures, and they are shaped by the survival and emotional needs of the various peoples, and the scope of their understandings. In the end, I’ve concluded that human nature is generally good, but that goodness is often easily overcome by cunning and ruthlessness. This is the central conflict of humanity; an unresolvable problem.

What's more, is that Confucianism also goes along with the Just World Fallacy, since it presupposes the idea of an external moral force in the form of Heaven and 'the Mandate of Heaven'. In short, an unfair ruler is supposed to draw misfortune on himself through his evil deeds, like earthquakes, hurricanes, poor harvests, and bad luck in war and diplomacy. To its' credit, though, Confucianism did emphasize the importance of education, qualifications through an examination (best during the Song Dynasty), and did (sometimes) provide a rationale for the people to rebel against an unfair ruler, since a ruler was supposed to be fair to his people. Then again, in a good system, rebellions should not be the "go-to solution" in the first place, and how many rulers in world history have admitted to being bad and changed their ways? (only Ashoka, the Indian Buddhist emperor, comes to mind...)

I don’t know. Maybe some degree of magical thinking is unavoidable and even necessary for society to function cohesively. I’m a pragmatist at heart and know not everything can be ideal. Education is certainly the backbone of a flourishing society. Of that much I’m very confident, and agree with you that Confucian teaching also elevates it highly. There’s really a lot to admire in The Analects, subtracting away some of the more questionable parts of the teachings until we’re left with the more solid stuff. My life has personally benefited from several of the Confucian proverbs.

Something similar happens in the US, where reformers of differing stripes, both progressive and reactionary, find it helpful to wear their collars backwards.

Confucianism teaches loyalty to the state only if the state is loyal to the people. The ruler-subject relationship is reciprocal, and the subject is encouraged to rebel against their ruler if the ruler doesn't do their part in a relationship. Legalism is the philosophy that says "follow the law, no matter what it says".

The ROC, or rather the many different regimes that controlled the ROC from 1911 to 1949, especially the KMT and those who claimed to be Sun Yat-sen's followers, were not anti-Confucius at all. Using Lu Sun's article to represent the viewpoint of the Chinese government at the time is misleading, since Lu had been an admirer of the Soviets since at least 1934. SYS himslef worked closely with the Soviets, but in his own writings, he often lauded Confucian ideals. He believed his principles were capable of achieving the Confucian Utopian vision of the Great Unity (大同), and make the nation belong to the public (天下為公). The ROC certainly didn't systematically suppress Confucian teachings like the PRC. Instead, selected Confucian classics are required study materials in school.

For one of your next Western, Monotheistic Religions videos, can you discuss St. John of the Cross's Dark Night of the Soul and the juxtaposition between loss of faith and faith renewal? The cases where people walk away from (or at least deeply challenge the efficacy of) a faith tradition to only embrace it again latter are extremely interesting to me. I'm interested to hear if there is any academic research into this. In my experience, U.S Christian traditions tend to "excommunicate" people--though not always formally--who waiver in their faith. Then, said congregations have little desire to address the deep seated faith crisis that the person goes through--chalking any "loss" as the person's own personal failings.
@DanKaraJordan
@DanKaraJordan 2 жыл бұрын
St. John's work is less about a modern sense of loss of faith, and more about a profound mystical experience (kenosis), which is an inner hollowing out and loss of self where even the sense of God as wholeness collapses into a sense of God as nothingness. Whereas a modern loss of faith is typically due to apathy or frustration with religious organizations and conceptual understandings of dogma, the St. John's Dark Night is due to a profound reorientation of one's direct experience of God and self, which is internally devastating and which leaves no ground to stand on. There is overlap between the two, but I would be worried about cheapening the religious experience of St. John by simply equating the two experiences.

Confucianism in contemporary China, especially as promoted and interpreted by officialdom, seems to represent conservatism in a specifically Chinese form. It reminds me of the image of Orthodoxy promoted by the Russian State, and Islam in Iran. I think Aleksandr Dugin would have a lot to say about the commonalities between the three state religions. In the West, by contrast there seems to be no official enthusiasm for anything besides individualism. This engenders a centripetal societal force in the West making for a lot of social tension and a metaphysical vacuum. Into this vacuum springs cultish appeals to conservatism and extreme religiosity, even fascism as an antidote to liberalism as it’s popularly understood in the promotion of individualism.

An extremely common misconception @4:08. Most precisely, 儒教 never _meant_ "Confucianism" to begin with - but rather the hybrid Sacred-&-Secular Religio-Philosophical *Scholasticism.* The reason we even use 'Confucianism' at all is because of _Europe's_ initial misunderstanding and analogy to christianity (the person implied being yeshua, in this case.). Hence, historically, 儒教 was mistranslated to "Confucianism" which then got recalqued into Chinese as 孔教. Ergo, 孔教 is a *denomination* _within_ 儒教 as opposed to a synonym. It is 儒教 with an emphasis on 孔夫子 (since The Sage himself was already a 儒 in the yet-older already-existent 儒教 of his day).

At the risk of badly explaining not fully formed thoughts, while also not totally awake or sober, I figure that the technology didnt come alone, but came with the cultures they came from as well. What’s probably happening now is that with everyone roughly on (roughly) the same page technologically and culturally everyone is outgrowing the western/American influence and starting to take the new stuff their own way again. Kinda like if you spent all your time learning to emulate someone or kick their ass. Or considering the last century and a half, both.

@@proger1960 That's an older reading, yes. It wasn't meant to be interpreted in that way, to paraphrase some quotes. "Be steadfast, but not rigid". "There are certain trends which are good and healthy, but traditions still have their worth." "Exemplary sayings are great but adapting them is the most important part." It was supposed to adapt, which it did for quite some time, but around the 12th century it started to fall into a malaise which it never quite recovered from as the Lixue (Neo-Confucianism) made the Rujia into a more religious and metaphysical aspect than it had been considered before (some may consider this a form of adaptation). There were some great masters with some interesting individual thought, but as the Qing dynasty progressed, so too did reform die on the lips of ministers.

A very interesting fact is that one major reason why so much attention is paid to Confucius is that his work is mostly extant. Shi Huang Di, the first Emperor of China ordered a purge of all books that were not on farming or science. After he died, they brought out what books survived. Many were of Confucian thought. So a part of this is purely coincidence.

@@wliaputs A bit of an overstatement. Other books did survive the Burning of the Books, but Confucianism (Rujia) had already gained a pretty strong following by that time and there were some experts who remembered it word-for-word and after Qin was demolished, they set about writing it down from memory. About 100 years later other early works were found, hidden in a wall, and this sparked a great debate in China regarding the authenticity of that corpus of works (in about 100 BCE), which still continues from time to time. Though nowadays we have a nearly accepted canon. Even to this day we are finding some older works in ancient tombs, excitingly a thought to be lost version of The Analects was found in a tomb only several years ago.

Confucianism is always in the every day lives of the Chinese people. The way you present it as if it is like a religion that people can choose to follow or not, it is not a religion but a "social system". You are looking from the outside and make criticism base of what you believe you understand, and that in it self is only skin deep. Confucianism never went away, it was always there simply because it is part of every day lives. What you have done is to use history to express an overview and therefore, draw a conclusion base on a very shallow comprehension.

I wonder about the alleged Confucian principle that the Ruler must be good, since it clashes with what we know of their mostly having been bad as far as their personal conduct went. As in the West many rulers preferred to be feared than to be loved. In early modern Europe we had Machiavelli, who certainly did not promote ethical behaviour: he seems to have been studied in high places at the same time that his book "The Prince" was officially condemned. President Macron of France was a scholar of Machiavelli. One of the intellectual lights of British Conservatism, the 19th century prime minister Lord Salisbury, went so far as to say that the moral principles that govern our private behaviour should play no part in guiding the actions of government. Businessmen have long followed that rule, and nowadays we have extended that indulgence to the private lives of our rulers also.

Confucian morality is based on a series of balances: filial love is balanced by paternal care, the subjects' obedience is balanced by the ruler's devotion to their welfare, etc. It sounds great but we must remember that one side (the obligations of those in a subaltern role) is enforced by law and power, the other side depends just on the 'good heart' of those in a position of authority (and on occasional revolts). At the end Confucianism, in spite of all its apparent depth and wisdom, is nothing more than another authoritarian philosophy.
