When Kaprizov shot the puck over the net, the play was blown dead, as it hit the net. It then fell toward the back of the goal, and no one picked it up. So it just sat there for a while, until Rossi found it and put it in the net.

This should be a concept for new OT rules: make overtime 5-on-5 with a shootout, but put two pucks on the ice at once for the entire period.

It's a safety issue. Hockey equipment is most effective at protecting the players from one direction. You want to minimize situations where players are facing away from the direction of fire. It's a dangerous sport and part of what keeps players safe is awareness.

They did away with the human goal judges several years ago. Now it's a guy in the booth, and Toronto makes sure it crossed the line. Woulda never happened if they were still there though.

I almost suspect Rossi lost track of the live puck in the scramble behind the net, and only saw the dead one when he reoriented himself since the live one went rocketing out the other side. So he picks up the dead puck immediately and scores a bewilderingly easy goal.

I've seen one other clip of something like this before, but that time the extra puck was sitting on the back of the net almost tucked under the padding on the bottom of it. How do you miss an extra just sitting there on the ice?

To be fair. No player noticed. Vasi, who's net area it is, didn't ever notice, No fans seemed to notice, and seemed just as confused, and even announcers and video replay guys didn't notice and had to hunt for it. Everyone missed it. Everyone. This is just one of those 1 in ten million moments.

This should be how the last two minutes of each game are played. Two pucks on the ice, if one goes in the goal a ref immediately throws another one down at center ice, just an absolute frenzy of possible scoring chances.

Do you truly believe that with the dozens and dozens of games played every week and the thousands of games played a year that little mistakes like this won't eventually happen, even with diligent and well-trained réf crews ? Announcer said that like Rossi didn't know what was going on and tried to score, he didn't, Rossi just was getting the puck out in the net (out of the way) so the play could continue

Years ago during a NYR game a fan threw a puck onto the ice and it skipped into the goal as the Rangers were coming forward. The NY Daily News had a great photo of it but it was during Messier's time there so hard for me to find.

This is hilarious! Seriously, just as an experiment, they should try playing with two pucks. Two breakaways at the opposite ends of the rink would be awesome! Whoever scores first gets the goal, play stops, pucks get dropped in the center.

Think the blame falls on the linesman for this one. They are responsible for dropping pucks after stoppage in plays except at start of game, period start and after a goal is scored.

Fun fact: Under IIHF rules, if Team A has possession of the puck when a second puck is discovered, play is not stopped until Team B gains possession of the correct puck, or the incorrect puck is played by either team or the two pucks collide.

I've always been an advocate of a bonus multi-puck round. Like maybe instead of offsetting penalties resulting in 4-on-4, you just play with two pucks for a couple minutes.
