We we're watching this in the bar with no sound and could not figure out wtf happened . I thought maybe it was stuck under the net during warmups and had gotten shook loose during the play. Happy to see the explanation.

It happened in a Rangers/Sens game too where a 2nd puck fell from the back of the net. It was around 2012

I've seen it happen before. I believe a puck fell out of a goalie's gear from warm up.

I've seen at least two other instances of two pucks being on the ice at the same time. In both cases the pucks were lodged on the back of the goal netting down where the netting wraps around the pipe that lays on the ice. They most likely got lodged there when the teams were warming up pre-game and nobody noticed. At some point players were battling for possession of the puck legitimately in play behind the net, and they ended up knocking the one loose that was lodged in the goal netting. I can't remember the teams that were playing but I remember very clearly in one of those instances that everyone on the ice except for one guy started playing the puck that got dislodged from the net and a good goal was indicated, then there was mass confusion when the referees and players realized the one guy that went after the legitimate puck still had it as the other puck was in the net. There was about a ten minute delay in play before they could finally figure out what the hell had happened and the goal was disallowed.

I've got one for ya...many years ago with the flurry of building rinks in the major cities (suburbs) I played hockey in a "new" rink barely a week old. Puck was shot at goal - missed goal and disappeared... No really any sound either. After a bit of head scratching the Ref's simply called for a face off after the puck remained gone. At the end of the game the resurfacer doors opened and the Zamboni crawled out from behind the goal and was about 20' from the boards when the puck appeared on the ice (clearly where the net belonged). Simply... the fit to the side of the Zamboni gate was more than predicted and not yet adjusted - the puck sailed in between the plastic panels sideways and got hung up up in the space between the plastic boards and the aluminum. It parked itself in the 6" of space that made the cavity of the boards.

It is the "Bonus" puck you get for achieving an award. Like in pinball when you get a second ball. Let's make this a regular thing. When a team gets a penalty, they do not lose the player, the other team gets two pucks!!!

I remember a game between the Canucks and Rangers where a Ranger player (I think it was Messier) shot the puck and missed the net. Then out of nowhere, a puck comes flying over the glass, past Kirk McLean, and into the Canucks net. Total confusion on the ice, and the play was stopped. Turns out, it was some fan in the upper bowl who threw the puck into the net. Jim Robson, the play-by-play man, said whoever threw it, has got a great arm and aim.

this is hilarious ~ i know in from way back history in the nhl that the pucks were 2 pieces layered together & when they broke apart there would be 2 pucks 2 different games going on ~ read ' the stanley cup story ' by henry roxborough ~ great read ~ also funny that there used to be concert stages in the middle of the ice but remained there during games so the d never knew what side the play was going to come from ~

In 2006, I think it was a Stanley cup final game. Not sure which game Edm v Canes But a black thing gets on the ice for a play, I thought it was the puck as a child so I started watching it. The announcers then questioned why people weren't going for the puck then realized it wasn't the puck. I Remeber it because I don't recall it ever being explained what it was.

That "Black thing" on the back of the net looks an lot like an NHL logo viewed from a steep angle. Given the puck is almost perfectly centered next to the net under that logo, it's possible everyone just passed over it mentally thinking it was just the logo.

From here on out I think hockey should be played with a "main puck" and also a "tertiary puck". The second puck only counts for half a goal though. 😊

Two thoughts: you shouldn't be shocked that the refs missed this. And even if you like the officials it's understandable that when a puck hits the netting you assume that it got stuck there and put it out of your mind. I am surprised at how long it took to be noticed by the players. (good work tracking down when it landed back on the ice though JH team). Second, with two pucks, could the Maple Leafs score a powerplay goal? Pundits here in Toronto are wondering how to fix their league worst disjointed powerplay that sits below 8%. Clearly it's the lack of pucks available. Of course, the PP units might just pass the puck back and forth more.

Fun. In a 2012 Senators vs Rangers game a puck similarly was sitting on the back of the net. No on saw it for some reason until the real puck landed in the same spot. The confused look on the players was funny. Like two alternate dimensions had merged. No one knew which puck to play. The refs let play continue…with the wrong puck. 😂 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKfZcq2misd4Zrcsi=PVDQU2f9W6TWJjl6

The wild only regulation loss came to the Flyers. Once Philly figures out everything don’t make a video about it please. Because as soon as you acknowledged them last season, they fell apart. I know that’s not why they fell apart, but once people decide to D ride Broad street Bullies, the hockey Gods stumps them.
