Well, this is a somewhat expensive camera to begin with, though you can get decent results with something like a Beaulieu R16, though those are a lot harder to load the film on. If you want to try film, Super8 is a very good place to start because the cameras are fairly cheap and the film is in a cartridge so there's less fiddling loading the film. With this year's Confuzzled I used two daylight spools of film. These can be loaded in subdued light which makes things easier, but they only run for about 2.75 minutes. This camera has a lightmeter and a though-the-lens viewfinder. I used a fixed-length lens rather than a zoom lens to make things simpler. It's then just a matter of setting the focus and adjusting the aperture so the light meter is roughly centred. Last year's shoot I used a 400ft roll which has to be loaded in total darkness. I used a dark-bag for that. It was more awkward to load since I couldn't see what I was doing and had to trust it was okay, but it did give a full 11 minutes of shooting time. I sent the film off to a lab for processing and 3K scan, they sent back some prores MOV files which I did some colour grading on in kdenlive. Unfortunately home scanning isn't practical for these as a good scanner costs about as much as a car.

I'm quite impressed with the video quality, I was expecting something closer to super 8

Yeah, 16mm is still sometimes used for commercials, music videos and suchlike, though usually the Super16 16:9 format, which my camera can't do. (The camera is ex-WDR, interestingly)
