Remarks as delivered:
“My name is Greg Casar and I represent East Austin in the United States Congress. Our country has always been better when we listen to students who challenge war and stand up for what is right.
In 1960 in this place, students came together to picket locations on the Drag against segregation. Their fight for civil rights continues here today.
In 1969, thousands of students came together here to stop the Vietnam War. Their fight for peace continues here today.
In 2003, thousands of students stood before this tower to stop the Iraq War. Their fight for peace in the Middle East lives through you here today.
We need a ceasefire now in Gaza. And it is up to us to live that out here today. My message to the University is clear: Students and faculty are not the enemy. Students and faculty are the University. We are the university. This is our democracy. And we are going to save it, here and for the world.
I am so proud of each and every one of you. Because you have raised your voices, Austin is the largest city in this country where your entire Democratic delegation voted “No” on sending more weapons to Netanyahu.
We must continue raising our voices, because no matter what Greg Abbott says, our movement is rooted in love. Whether you are Muslim or Jewish, immigrant or native-born, Israeli or Palestinian, we believe your human life is worth protecting.
There are millions more lives at stake and your continued organizing is the only way we can stop being complicit in this killing and instead get to saving our shared humanity. Solidarity forever.”
