Like "soy" and "estoy" in Spanish. No such thing in French, "être" can be either permanent or temporary. Luckily, speaking French and Spanish will speed up learning Italian it seems. My father taught me Latin and Greek as a kid (I am much too young to have been taught in school, rose rosam rosares, rosarum, etc haha) and I can guess my way around all Romance languages and even some Saxon/Germanic languages. I was in Italy in 2012, I didn't know one word but I realized I could understand most of what was being said/written. I'm a native French speaker. I like your courses. Prof Dave > all. Thanks.

Why use "proprio": What is the difference between "Io sto male." and "Io sto proprio male." Also, Thank you for your lessons. The way you teach is the way I learn.

It just kind of adds emphasis. It's sort of like saying "I feel really sick" instead of "I feel sick".

_Essere_ and _stare_ do not denote “permanent” and “temporary” states. You are thinking of the Spanish (and Portuguese) verbs _ser_ and _estar_ , which both correspond to the Italian _essere_ . You don’t say, “*Sto triste,” the way you say, “Estoy triste” in Spanish, or, “*Sto pronto,” the way you say, “Estoy listo,” in Spanish. Using the terms “permanent” and “temporary” is inaccurate anyway since even the adjective _muerto_ (“dead”) takes the verb _estar_ in Spanish. It is better to speak of “characteristic” and “condition.”

@@7h698 You’re welcome, though just to be clear, I’m not Italian. Also, you can’t fault Professor Dave since these Italian lessons are written by his mother (who teaches Italian at college, believe it or not).

@@TomSFox yeah you are right. When you put out so much information and knowledge your bound to make a mistake sometimes. I think I'll delete my previous comment as I don't want him to get discouraged since he's still doing great videos. Didn't know that about his mom tho cool!
