Today's installment is all about connecting the XR18 to OBS for live streaming. Depending on your end goal, there's more than one way to do it and this discusses multiple methods using the Behringer and OBS without the need in additional software (or hardware... beyond your camera(s), backline (amps... drums), and normal mics and sound equipment you'd normally use for a performance). Feel free to share the video link on social media to spread the information. Leave me any questions or comments here. ...And I'm curious if anyone has any live stream nightmare stories after this year of heavy live stream creation and viewing. LOL. Surely, there must be a few "Our best promoted event and I forgot to actually go live with my stream!" or "...And that's when viewers heard the sound of a toilet flushing!" stories. LOL!! You can use a FX bus for the stream instead of two Aux buses, if you have an FX to spare. Use the Precision Limiter FX and disable Main LR output for it. If you have XLR inputs to spare you can also connect room mics to pick up the ambience, so it sounds less flat. Make sure to disable Main LR for those. I haven’t tested this myself but it should work, like I have it set up on the X32. Unsure if you can send other FX to the stream FX though, like reverb...

Hi Alan that’s always nice videos and you know that this one covers a lot of my situation a lot of the things that I want to do with my stream and the xr18. I am using the 4.39 driver version I guess. Because unfortunately the newest version doesn’t give WDM drivers and I need those for routing different applications to the stream but your video is an eye-opener in fact after I get over COVID-19 I will try to set the whole thing up from scratch

Alan, these videos you've made have solved so many of the issues that have plagued our band for years. So for that thank you! When it comes to streaming with OBS... I have a specific question. I'd like to both record all 16 channels and the 2 main LR outputs through reaper and also stream the 2 main LR outputs via OBS. Can you make a video for that use case? Thanks so much!
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I had to think about your question and how maybe to do that routing... I think I see how to do that. It seems like what would work is to go to the USB Sends page of the XR18 and then if you setup USB 1 and USB 2 like in this video (move them to L-R on the graph) ....and THEN move all the other patch points over 2 places, you'd be on your way to getting it done. IOW... USB 3 feeds channel 1, USB 4 feeds channel 2, USB 5 feeds channel 3... all the way down to USB 18 feeding channel 16. (or actually, Channel 1 feeds USB 3, channel 2 feeds USB 4 to be more technically correct with the terminology). You then connect your band to your mixer like normal. Nothing changed on the input routing. NOW... Reaper then should see your L-R as tracks 1 and 2... Track 3 would be channel 1, Track 4 would be channel 2 (following the same order as the above USB routing patch). AND... OSB should also see your L R mix since it only listens to USB 1 and 2 (and I'm not aware that can be changed). But, assuming I'm right on what I just thought thru, it wouldn't need changed. Does this make sense? Have you tried this patching and experienced a fly in the ointment I'm not thinking of? The Reaper patching should be 1-18 just like in the Reaper/XR18 video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rorQe3qvp9SJm5I The part I'm trying to wrap my head around is whether there's any reason you'd need to mute the tracks on Reaper (or mute the master) so that it doesn't feed back into the stream. I guess it would just depend on the Reaper routing like in the Reaper video... And, thinking out loud.... Even if Reaper IS routed so that it's Master is feeding your computer's audio, you still have a computer audio mute and fader in OBS. LOL... Obviously I've never tried to do what you're wondering about... ...But pretty sure the answer lies in the above. LMK if there's something I'm missing.
@mestock23

@@AlanHamiltonAudio thanks for that explanation it makes sense... however is there not a way to send audio from reaper to OBS instead? Would that be better?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@mestock23 I assume that is maybe where the ReaStream plugin could come in. If I'm following , you're wanting your Reaper mix to be the stream mix, and the XR18 to only be an audio interface (set the gains, rout it to Reaper, do the mixing, FX, etc. there on Reaper for the Stream)? I've not used the ReaStream plugin so I'm not 100% sure whether it's the answer, or an answer, here. And I have a feeling there's another way too... I'm going to have to do some research. LMK if I understand right what you're wanting to do so I try and research the right things! ;)

@@AlanHamiltonAudio I would still be using the XR18 to do all of the mixing for FOH and the stream. I'd like to save off all 18 channels (16 plus the 2 mains) in reaper just so I can have them for virtual sound checking, etc. later on. I'd also like to send the 2 mains to OBS for streaming. The question is whether or not reaper and OBS can receive the same USB inputs at the same time from the XR or if I need to send them XR -> Reaper -> OBS

Great video, this worked perfectly for us except for one issue. The output volume to our mains and all is great, but it is very quiet in OBS. Gain structure is setup as normal, averaging -18 and the faders are at or near unity. Any idea as to how to get more volume into OBS?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 2 жыл бұрын
If your USB send for the main outs are set to 'red' then that would be pre-fader so nothing you'd do with your mains would impact what is sent to OSB. Is that how it is? That said, where does your main fader normally ride? What are you seeing on your main output meter? Are you using DCAs or subgroups in your mix and what are those set at? While the main fader position wouldn't matter as to what is being sent to OSB via USB, those questions could help sort out where there might be some loss of expected level to the feed. Another question would be whether you're setting your input gains to average -18dBFS or peak at -18dBFS? They should average -18dBFS but peak higher. So it's possible you're being too conservative here if you're barely letting them hit -18dBFS rather than normally just live there and peak even more.

Great video, I will use this for sending audio to an iPhone for live-streaming. I've seen some videos say that I must select the 2/2 channel interface because the iPhone, like OBS, only sees channels 1 & 2. It doesn't look like this is necessary from your video. Is that correct?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure when it comes to iPhone. I'm pretty sure, at least for Windows it's just going to see 2 USB channels no matter what and doesn't care if the console is in 2/2 mode or not. But of course, it's only going to see USB 1 and USB 2 sends. But the unit lets you route any outputs to USB1 and USB2.

@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, for a basic streaming setup, that sounds like you have what you need. OBS is both powerful, but not all that user-friendly... So it helps learning everything you can about OBS and its terminology and work flow. It's pretty good about interfacing with different cameras and the like. But like I said, can be confusing too. It's not like you just plug the camera(s) and audio in and have a "choose/preview" and "go" button like you might with a dedicated hardware switcher. But it also does all of that, as long as you can get users thru the learning curve. And it's free... well... outside of the laptop it needs to run on. But it works like a dedicated switcher complete with a preview monitor when it's all configured and running. We just did a streaming install last month based around a ATEM Mini Pro switcher and a PTZ camera. But we opted for the dedicated switcher for ease of use and obvious workflow. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqOxaYqha56laM0

Love your videos, Alan! Keep up the great work! We use our XR18 with OBS for our weekly music livestream and we're wondering what your recommendation would be for adding a compressor or limiter to the final mix going out to the stream so that we aren't too quiet when we're speaking and don't clip when we're performing, without negatively affecting our mix. Thanks!!!
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose the Precision Limiter might be an option here. I imagine I'd just use the bus compression on the stream mix, set it somewhere between 2:1 and 4:1, dial in the threshold enough that it's constantly around 4dB of compression (averaging 4dB, sometimes peaking more), then go to the makeup gain setting on the comp and set it to 4dB of makeup gain. As for attack and release, I'd try the AUTO setting for those. Probably need to give this a dry run, because you might have to adjust the ratio more or less depending on how it plays out when you hear the stream. And, no way to know without hearing it if 2:1 and a lower threshold is better than 4:1 and a lighter threshold to get that 4dB of avg gain reduction. And then beyond that... you might find an avg of 6dB of gain reduction might work better and need to make that same determination again with the other above settings. But, I'd try and be more conservative than that until I found out for sure that I needed to crimp the dynamic range more. Keep in mind, whatever you average on the gain reduction meter (average, not peak reduction) you need to match that with your makeup gain control. IOW.... averaging 4dB of GR, add 4dB of makeup gain. Averaging 6dB of GR, add 6dB of makeup gain. Averaging 2dB of GR, add 2dB of makeup gain.

@@reginaldrichardson8832 I think you should use the "insert" option to apply on both lines of your stereo bus. So that you don't have to take up a slot from the global 4 FXs being set by default from the mix. For Berlinger X32 or Midas M32, they have "matrix" option for advance rounding option. And that could help for adding multiple buses into sterero outputs . With that you have more flexibility to select FXs for your stereo output. I hope it helps.

Hi Alan. Since I can't send a separate mix to obs without robbing an aux channel (like I hoped could) is there any advantage (or point) to going usb vs. continuing to to send directly from the aux output? Seems like a shortcoming of the mixer that the usb output doesn't allow for it's own mix. Rooms affect the sound enough that the house mix doesn't generally make for the best recording mix. Thx.

Hello Alan, I just came across your page and found your videos very informative and helpful. Thank you! I do have a question though. My current streaming setup consists of using a Yamaha MG16XU analog mixer with backing tracks being played through my iPad and an audio interface (Tascam US 4x4HR) connected to the mixer. I have been looking to upgrade to a digital mixer but I want to continue using the tracks and was wondering if I could connect my iPad directly to the behringer, to take advantage of the the 18 channel audio interface feature, and then run two XLR cables from the aux buses on the behringer to the interface which will then connect to our laptop for streaming. Would this setup work ?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
I think you can get where you want to go, but I'm not an iPad user so I'm not 100% certain. I know for a PC I can set the XR18 to listen for USB1 and USB2 on the aux in channels (Stereo 17/18) and so can send stereo tracks from the PC over USB directly to the aux in channels. Of course the PC needs Behringer's USB audio drivers loaded. Meanwhile, a Mac will do it natively and doesn't need drivers downloaded. But, that all leaves me a little unsure where the iPad fits into that as far as capabilities go.

I'm not really sure without some more information. Are you controlling the mixer with X-Air-Edit or a tablet? Either way, is it showing your source (mic or whatever) on the meters of the XR18 when you talk or send sound? I guess the first thing to figure out is where the sound is being lost in the equation. On another video, someone was having trouble getting sound and it turned out their problem was they were trying to control the mixer via the USB connection so their mixer changes they thought they were doing weren't actually doing anything. USB is for audio to be shared back and forth with the XR18 (depending on routing), but the network connection (ethernet/wifi) is the only way to control the mixer.

@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is possible. Look down the thread a few comments to the discussion with mestock23. The discussion veered off into some other routing areas, but one thing my testing showed was that was easily possible to stream from the XR18 into OBS, while recording ind tracks into Reaper for a later mixdown. You can also 'mix' live inside of Reaper and just use the XR18 for the pres, and feed the Reaper mix to the stream. So that way you could use Reaper plugins, Waves, etc.. inside of Reaper. (With the added complexity of the computer needing to be able to keep up with all of the plugins)... and whether it would be an issue with latency. But that shouldn't be a factor because it's not like the band is trying to play along to the stream. There's also the ReaStream plugin, that can be downloaded as a standalone plugin, and installed into OBS that could be a factor in some of this. Reastream SEND from Reaper... Reastream RECEIVE in OBS. But, to stream a mix from the XR18, while simultaneously recording the individual tracks into Reaper is do-able pretty easily. And pretty straight forward. I'm not 100% sure what is the 'best' way. I was more testing possibilities last night to get a feel for that type of thing. If I was to do a video, it might have to be "Here is 'a' way to do this... more than here is 'the' best way. ;)

@@AlanHamiltonAudio Thank you for answering my question! The issue I was having was finding a way to have channels 1-18 be in stereo. My buddy and I did figure this out though. Today my band is going to live stream or performance to Facebook. I'm sure everything is going to go wrong but fingers crossed that will be alright. The two things I'm worried about is controlling the head with my phone so that I can separately change the parameters of each channel and then using the laptop to stream to Facebook. The other worry I have is being able to give the band our separate mix from what the audience IE Facebook will hear.

Hi Alan, amazing video you’ve got. I use the usb output for my OBS live stream, but I have an issue with the FX, every time I use the FX input during the church service it sounds good in house but it’s a mess online. The hall and delay effect. So is it possible for me not to have the in house effect on the live stream production. I don’t use an AUX, but a direct usb output from the board to my computer.
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio Жыл бұрын
Not really possible if you're just sending the house mix to the stream. What does the house mix (as far as those FX) sound like in headphones? Maybe something about your venue is masking what the FX are doing in the house, but you don't get the 'benefit' of that masking online in the stream? There might be a compromise setting if you set the FX to what you hear in the headphones, and then listen in the house. Beyond that, the only real answer is to set up a dedicated stream mix with using the auxes. I suppose you could set up a subgroup, unassign that subgroup from the L-R, and feed every channel EXCEPT the FX to the subgroup, and assign that subgroup to the USB outs for OSB. That would be your house mix going to OSB sans the FX. But if you're going to that trouble, might as well just do a dedicated OSB/Stream mix anyway and dial in the perfect mix, and perfect FX balance, for the stream.

You can solo the stream mix (select stream mix bus and press solo button in the fader tray) and monitor it via the headphones. In X-Air Edit, if you press the Bus 5 button in the master section (on the right of the mixer GUI) and then click on the Bus 5 Icon in the fader tray that comes up, then tab over to "Channel" and click it at the top of the screen, the "Stereo Link" button will be in the screen that comes up, on the left. @AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@lylevictoria7723 As long as you haven't changed anything in the default routing, and are connected normally to your FOH amps/speakers (they connect to the L-R XLR outputs on the XR) then selecting SOLO on the stream channel should only change what is in the headphones and not do anything to your FOH mix. In the default routing (In/Out) in the Main Out tab, you should see the Main connected to the Main L/R and the Phones connected to Monitor. And by "Monitor" it means the engineer monitoring, the headphones, and not stage monitors... although the engineer can monitor those stages mixes too by soloing the Aux of any monitor mix (aux out). Just like the stream, it'll send that output to the headphones. Normally, by default, if nothing is soloed, the headphones will hear the house mix. But, selecting solo will only change what goes to the headphones and not affect FOH at all. I suppose the only concern would be if someone changed that default In/Out routing on the Main Out tab to have the Mains connected to Monitor. I can think of no normal reason to do that for a setup like you're describing (that would be more of a dedicated recording studio change), outside of an accident. But, if someone did do that, and you never tried the solo button on anything, then your PA would seem to be working normally. But, you can quickly check this just by looking at the In/Out-Main Out routing, or just put some music thru the PA, press solo on a channel with nothing coming thru it the next time you turn on the PA. If you're routing has been changed from default to that recording studio type routing, when you press SOLO on that unused channel, your FOH music that is playing back will go away when you press that solo button. So, that's the long answer... The short answer is as long as nobody has changed the default output routing, clicking solo to listen to another source will only change what is in the headphones, not the mains. This video talks a little about some of this in a overview of the XR18 so it might help a bit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYWwaHyaoKijqM0

@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
If you find a definitive answer in what the practical difference is between ANALOG and INPUT in the tap options, let me know. What I can tell you is that both options are after the trim/gain. And neither option captures the HPF (low cut). So, whether you tap at Analog or Input, your USB levels being received in a DAW will still be impacted by the gain setting. And I went thru some things just now to 100% confirm what I thought I already knew, but I thought 'maybe' INPUT includes the HPF and I'd just missed that. It doesn't. And I double-checked, both analog and input are definitely after the gain.

FWIW, I always choose ANALOG. I assume, it's the most pure of the options (first tap point) since I will be mixing in the box anyway and don't need anything (typically) from the XR18 except the interface itself when I'm recording. But in reality, I don't find a practical difference in Analog or Input though.

You can monitor the live stream audio in real time at the XR18 with headphones and solo your master bus that is your stream output. Otherwise, you could monitor through a device getting the stream, but you'd have quite a bit of latency with that method (and that could get confusing in the same room with hearing everything live too). You can always record the stream and listen back later to make overall tweaks and compromises, but for mixing in real time, the best way is probably with headphones out of the XR18 and solo the bus with the stream mix. I'd also recommended good headphones or earbuds for this. I use Sony 7506 headphones a lot. You don't have to use a DAW...

Let me see if I follow you, and make sure we're on the same page. Your one statement leads to a question. "I also would like to pull the audio feed from off the PC in the control booth that runs my Behringer XR18" When you say "runs" do you mean it's just connected via wifi or cat 5e to let you control the mix... or is there a USB connection too? If it's just the control computer for the XR, then there's no audio passing thru it, unless there's also a USB connection. Beyond that question, what is the overall goal- You want to get the audio from the mixer to the ATEM switcher so you can have everything at that single point? ...Or you want to feed the ATEM switcher to a streaming computer, and also connect the XR18 audio to the streaming computer, and that streaming computer then is your actual single point for these two sources? ...Or other end goal?

@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@rogernelson4085 Ok, that's kind of what I thought you were getting at. There is no XR18 audio in the control computer so it doesn't do you any good to connect that to the ATEM switcher. To get audio from the XR18 to the control computer, you'd need a USB connection. I'm going to assume the run you're talking about is longer than that would be practical, and kind of overcomplicating the other way to do this anyway.... You're going to have to bring the audio back from the XR18 at the stage, via 1 or 2 mic lines (balanced XLR cables) and adapt the signal down to come into the ATEM's 1/8" TRS mic inputs. You can either do it via XLR Y splits at the L-R outputs of the XR18, and you only need 1 if you're mixing in mono, or you could assign one or two of the aux outs (XLR outs) on the front of the XR18 to clone your L-R main signal. The advantage with that is you'd have the ability to lower the level being sent to those audio inputs on the ATEM via the main bus levels on the XR18. But you need to have some of those XLR 'aux' outputs open. But, depending on the input range of the ATEM control on those audio inputs, it could already cover that base for you. You aren't going to want to hit mic level inputs with line level signal. So, somewhere/someway you'll need to choke that level back. But that is easily doable whether with existing equipment, or an adapter/transformer. The only other thing to watch out for would be a ground loop and ground noise by interconnecting the ATEM and the video/streaming system with the XR18. But, once again, it's a simple fix between either a pin 1 lift, a Sescom IL19, or some other transformer and/or pin 1 lift switch combo. But for just connecting that XR18 control computer to the ATEM in the booth, that's not going to work. There's no audio passing thru that computer from the XR18. It's just telling the controls what to do. It's not 'hearing' anything it does. So, with that, you're kind of in a "can't get there from here scenario".

You said I can stero an odd even but not an even odd? So you are saying they have to start with an odd number channel. So I would have to start odd ... as in I can link 17 to 18 but not 16 to 17 correct?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, in this case we're talking outputs (busses) and you have 6 busses (not counting the FX busses). You can link 1 to 2, or 3 to 4 because the odd number is first. You cannot link 2 to 3... or 4 to 5. The even number can't be first (or 'left' if you want to think of it in a left/right configuration). The same is true for the 16 mic inputs. For example: You'd want to connect a stereo keyboard into channels 5 and 6 if you want to stereo link them so one fader controls both channels equally (and so that one channel strip automatically matches the other). If your keys were to fall onto 6 and 7, you couldn't stereo link them because the even number is first. So you'd need to re-work your input list if stereo linking is important to you on a source. There is a pseudo workaround for inputs, at least for the volume part of the equation and having one fader to control a pair of channels, and that is to use a DCA. X32 DCA Video explains it (same concept for the XR18): kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4e9dGWbf82LhKc But that's more than you asked about! ;)

I'm a little confused on how to do this... We're able to get the channels back through 17/18 but I'm not sure where to go from there. Do you have a video, or can you suggest a video, that addresses how to do this specifically?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 2 жыл бұрын
Is the mixer also doing FOH or is it exclusively the stream mixer? I'm assuming it's house too and you're just wanting to do things in the DAW before going to the stream. If all you want to do is send what you do in the DAW to the stream then you just need to get that to USB 1 and USB 2 (because that is the only place that OBS 'looks/listens' for the audio interface). But, off the top of my head, you'd have to sacrifice USB1 and USB2 from being sends for the tracks. They couldn't do both things. I wonder if you set the XR18's channel 1 and channel 2 to be USB instead of analog, didn't use tracks 1 and 2 on your DAW (well, you could use them but they couldn't be listening to XR18 CHANNELS 1 and 2 so default DAW routing would be different there), and made sure your DAW's stereo outs are USB 1 and USB 2... if that would get your DAW outs to the stream without any real routing changes in the XR18 (except for telling channel 1 and channel 2 to get their signal from USB and not analog)? It's not something I've done so I'm just trying to think thru the routing and how it might be done. I know Restream (or Reastream) plugin has been discussed a while ago and that MIGHT be a better way to do this... or not... I've not used it. Maybe Google or YT search for that term and see if that ends up sending you on a workable path. I hate to send you down the rabbit hole, but since I've not done what you're wanting to do, I'm kind of just making some guesses here and working off of memories from some time back.

What is the purpose of using PostFader and setting all the faders up to unity, while you could've just used a SubGroup?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio Жыл бұрын
I think I mentioned it in the video... but maybe it was in a different video... If you use a subgroup then that is (like you're saying) essentially all send faders at unity. BUT you have no control over them. They are fixed at unity (they aren't even shown on the screen at that point because it's a fixed setting). With Post Fader sends, you're only STARTING at unity BUT retaining the option to rebalance the stream mix that is on that send. The post send faders are available to be adjusted. Case in point: Maybe the guitars are loud from the stage so you have them choked back in the house. With a subgroup they'd also be choked back in the stream feed (where nobody is hearing the house mix and stage volume... so they need more guitar for a proper mix on the stream). With Post Fader you could boost the guitar even above unity on the stream send's guitar fader. This could be true of a lot of things... loud snare for example... There could be opposite examples too... like with an acoustic guitar or keys and no amp or stage volume (especially if the musicians are on ears). So, those things could possibly need to come DOWN in the stream. Subgroup sending to the stream wouldn't allow that to happen. So, while the subgroup idea would work if you wanted an exact mirror image of the house mix (sans the house EQ or any other processing) AND you wanted your house vocal balancing, leads turned up, etc. to match the house in the stream... With a subgroup your mix MUST and will match the house mix. With Post Fader you can listen to the stream (do a dry run and record it even) and rebalance your starting mix/baseline mix to better suit what the stream needs... while still getting things like the guitar turned up on leads, the vocals rebalanced for different lead singers, etc... (since those things will still follow the house). Once you have that baseline, as long as the band doesn't change or change their own settings, you can just save it and start there each time.

If the streaming software lets you choose which outputs it's listening for from the Behringer, then set it up to listen to whatever outputs your stream is on, and tell the Card to use out 1-8 or 9-16 (whichever captures those stream outputs). If your streaming interface is for example listening to USB 9-10 from the board, and that is where you have your stream mix assigned, then set the CARD in routing to OUT 9-16. Not in a straight forward way. A couple of possibilities-... Maybe you could make your L-R outs be USB 1 and 2 in the USB Sends, and then route your channels to be channel 1 = USB3, channel 2 = USB4, channel 3 = USB5.... The adjust accordingly in Reaper. You could record tracks 1-2 as USB1 and USB2 and they be a 'full mix' copy, plus the other 16 tracks be channels 1-16 or whatever 16 things you want to route to Reaper. You can only route 18 things in total from the XR18 via USB outs. So, you know 2 of the USB outs would have to be USB 1 and USB 2 for L-R outs that you'll need for OSB audio in. Whether you also want to record the full stereo mix to Reaper while you're at it would be up to you. I don't know why you couldn't do it this way though. Seems like I even did an experiment with this. Maybe scan thru the comments and see if there's some talk about this. It's been a while, and it might be in one of the Reaper threads instead of here. It might not be easy to find... Or you do it via an extra piece of hardware. You could always use a secondary USB interface, fed from your L-R XR18 outputs to be the input source for OSB. A couple of Y cables would let you split the mix to the house and to the inputs of a USB pre. At that point, you could even have a 2nd laptop... one for Reaper and one for streaming.

Hello, Alan! Thank you for your tutorial! But I would like to ask how you route the sound out to the stream. I also choose IN Behringer 1-2 but OBS rejects using it as a source. I route BUS 5-6 through the 3.5 connector into the laptop. Maybe I do smth wrong? When I listen it through the In Ear monitors everything sounds perfectly.

Did you install the Behringer USB audio drivers on the computer (or are you using Apple)? You might try installing the older USB audio driver, rebooting, and trying that. Of course, it can never hurt to try a different USB cable. The cable should be fairly short too. It won't work over a long distance at all (unless you use an active style cable). Until you get it working, just use a 2-5' USB cable before trying 10 or 15' long. I think 15' is the max, but it might actually be less than that.

@@AlanHamiltonAudio Yes, of course! So, OBS takes the signal through the USB, not the analog connecting? The cable is about 1.5 ft long, so it can,t be an issue.
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 2 жыл бұрын
@@Artur_Chernyavsky OBS 'can' take the signal thru USB connection... That's how I've done it. But, you should be able to do it via analog too. The XLR outputs on the XR18 are balanced mono outs and the 3.5mm input on the laptop is likely unbalanced stereo. So, you need an adapter that puts bus 5 on the tip of the 3.5mm and bus 6 on the ring of the 3.5mm. That's not necessarily, what might be happening with just any TRS to 2x XLR adapter. So that could give you trouble if it's not. But, the USB method just takes a USB cable and to make sure you route Bus 5 to USB out 1 and Bus 6 to USB out 2 in the USB routing of the XR18. And then OBS should see it on any computer with the USB audio drivers installed.

is there a way for the computer to see more than just "Beringer 1+2" at 1:35 ? I mean, If I choose 18 channel mode, will the computer program then be able to see more channels? Is it a limitation specific to the streaming software? I would like to have a few extra channels available for Zoom+Skype calls, that will be included into the OBS Stream. More or less the same way as the Rodecaster Pro 2 can handle three stereo USB connestion and not just one.
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 2 жыл бұрын
I think 2 channels is a limitation of OBS (I haven't looked at newer versions of software though)... I think you might (emphasis on 'might' because I've not used it in the way I"m about to mention) be able to do something via adding a DAW to the equation. Maybe look into ReStream (I think that is the plugin's name). I'm not saying this will work, but that is probably the first thing I'd research to see it might work somehow to get you where you're going. And of course, make sure the newer OBS software hasn't added capabilities since I did the video. The XR18 can definitely output 18 sep channels via USB. It's just a matter if the software can accept more than 2 channels of input and/or lets you assign different USB channels to different software inputs and not just specifically USB 1 and USB 2. Having a DAW in the equation would let you mute/fade in/out additional channels of audio that would/could feed USB1 and USB2. So it would be your audio switcher... or audio mixer since you wouldn't have to switch anything, just add and remove audio source as you want. And level mix with the DAW channel faders.

I'm not tried Zoom, but I would think it would be the same in general, with the XR18 part to be exactly the same, and of course for Zoom to require you telling it to get audio from the Behringer. And/or telling Windows to use the Behringer and maybe Zoom automatically follows along. But you'd have to monitor audio out of the Behringer. I never use internal wifi except at home. I use either my TP Link 1750 or Asus wifi router in the XR18 onsite. I also use an ethernet cable and just hardwire it to my desktop sometimes and don't any wifi router. Connecting has never really been an issue... except with the internal wifi that can get overwhelmed pretty easily when there's lots of wifi traffic and then you get kicked off and can't reconnect.

Is there a way to control the volume of the stream mix separately than the house mix, but not have to control the individual channels. I notice the volume that comes into my laptop from the XR18 is very low
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio Жыл бұрын
You can tap the USB send for the house mix at ANALOG if it's not already. That way your Master fader setting and Master EQ (or comp) won't have any impact on the USB send. If it's tapped post fader, then if you're pulling your master down, that would affect the output level to OSB. Otherwise, you might look to your overall gain structure. Are your input gains averaging -18dBFS on the input meters? That is averaging... which means peaking higher. Some people set this too conservatively and only let the channels peak at -18dBFS. Are your channels faders able to live around unity? If they are choked back and nowhere in the range of unity then possibly your input gains are too high (so check them with the input meter to confirm they are correct). If they are correct, but channel faders have to stay choked back in order not to be too loud, then where is the master fader living? It should be able to live around unity itself. If it's not, then that likely points to a gain structure issue downstream of the console. The quick fix IS to reduce the master fader so that the channel faders can get to around unity (for the most part anyway... They need to be where the mix needs them to be to sound good but you also want that baseline to be AROUND unity and if it can't be then that's a clue gain structure likely is wrong somewhere). That type of thing would manifest itself in not getting enough signal on the USB out for the L-R even if the USB send for L-R was set to ANALOG (red circle in the output graph). IOW, the USB send would be at a default of unity output and not impacted by the master fader setting, but the channel sends being pulled back far away from unity would mean that's a weak signal. And for the house outs, the amps (or processor) would be adding too much level to the system for you to run the mixer in that normal sweet spot.

@@AlanHamiltonAudio In my case I am using Zoom to stream on a Mac. In Zoom's audio settings it is set is "original sound" as it is optimal for Audio mixes. Also there's an option for automatically adjust volume, but oddly enough with the XR18, it doesn't allow me to manually adjust the volume if i disable it as compared to other digital interfaces i've worked with. On the XR18 side, I have the USB Sends set to Analog, specifically like in your video for USB1 & 2 set to Main L & R. (Your Option 1) My master fader is set to unity. My individual channels faders i have set to unity (or close to it). In order to get to -18dbfs I have to set to set the gain quite high (like +40db) and still i feel the audio playback is not as high as I feel it could be. Meanwhile I have to turn down my PA speakers to 1/4" just so it's not too loud in a 1000 sq ft room for the house mix.

Hi Alan, How are you Sir? Is it all possible to assign USB1&2 to the RCA outputs as oppose to Aux 5 & 6 just to have more Aux ports available for monitor use?
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio 3 жыл бұрын
You're talking about the RCA outs on an X18, not the X32, right? I don't have an X18 to confirm what I think is the way it's setup, but I think the answer to your question is 'no'. Assuming you mean the X18 and not the X32. The XR18 doesn't have the RCA outs that the X18 does... but I think those are hard wired to the main L-R outs. Otherwise, I think there would be some additional options in the X-Air Edit software.... Or Mix Station (Android).... that I'd be able to see. The Control Room out can be assigned to various USB outs, but it would still take one of your busses on each channel to feed it... So you don't really gain anything, since you still lose that feed anyway. Unless I'm missing something trying to think this through at 3:30AM ;)

I don't have an MR12 to test, but since the USB is different on the MR18/XR18 versus the other X-Air and M-Air models I'm assuming it wouldn't work. I just did a quick test on Mixing Station in 'offline mode' and it seems to be confirming my suspicions. The MR18 and XR18 has full 18 channel USB I/O. The other X-Air and M-Air models just let you record 2 channels to a USB stick. But on the XR18 and MR18 you can't just record to a USB stick either... And it doesn't appear that you can connect via USB and even route those 2 tracks anywhere on the MR12. I could be wrong since I don't have the actual hardware to test it. If not, then you'd just have to take an Aux out into your line input of your computer to get the audio to the stream that way and tell OSB to get the audio from that input... or have an entirely different USB Preamp and feed that same MR12 aux out into the USB Pre and then connect THAT, via USB, to your streaming computer and setup OSB to see that USB Preamp. At least off the top of my head would seem to be your options. At least since I don't have an MR12 to experiment with and double check anything.

@@lylevictoria7723 Can you not turn up the master level on the XR18 of the bus that is feeding the stream? I think you said it was bus 1 and 2, stereo linked. So that would mean you're connected to send a dedicated mix to the stream. The output faders for bus 1 and 2 outputs should give you an overall up and down level control for that stream mix. If you're gaining the channels really low, that could also cause you this kind of problem... But then there's also this: Assuming you set the bus send up as 'post fader', if your channel faders are all nowhere near unity on the console then that could cause the problem too. And if your faders are around unity, but you have the channels all assigned to a DCA (or DCAs) and the DCAs are choked back and nowhere near unity themselves, then that would be the same as your channel faders being pulled back (as far as the stream bus is concerned). If your bus 1 and 2 master output fader is already around unity (if you have some room to turn it, then just turn it up and see what that does), I would suspect you have a channel gain structure issue leading to you not having enough signal at the input, or else you have too much input level, and you've over-compensated with the channel faders or DCA's. It's really hard to say though. I'm kind of going off your symptoms and the common reasons I can think of. You might check out this video about gain structure on the XR18 to make sure you're following good practices: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn6bkoybnbSHr6s Keep in mind, the -18dBFS referenced in that video is an average level for the input. It can peak more. Even 6dB more. If you've been setting your gains to peak at -18dBFS, or never, ever, go above -18dBFS, then that would mean you're setting your gains too low. If you're been setting the input gain to meter at 0dBFS on the console, then that would be a problem of too much gain, which would likely mean your problem is manifesting itself by your channel faders being too low or your DCA's too low. Once you fix this issue (if you have something like this behind the problem), then you'll likely need to make another change for your house speakers because they've likely been adjusted around the console gain structure being wrong and so when you follow the signal flow, other things will then present themselves. Not necessarily hard to address, but would need to be addressed. If my gain structure theory is correct, then that first video link is probably the most relevant. There might be something in this one too though, but it's not as specific as the first video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYWwaHyaoKijqM0
