Connecting swr meter with linear amp and radio

Did any of you dudes go to college? Wait till you need to line up 5 or 6 units like a tuner/tvi unit and chokes (ferrites) Pretty much a simple matter of knowing what each unit's purpose is and sending the current in the right direction via jumper cable, from the radio to the antenna. (Radio-Swr Meter-Amp-Tuner.) If you mess up, switch each unit's connections one by one, Much loud static and a strong incoming signal will tell you that it is pretty much hooked up right. Make sure SWR 1.1 to 1.3 or bye-bye amplifier. And always drive the amp with the lowest possible wattage, for beginners, 12 to 13-volt power supply, (Sorry i got carried away a bit) 73s

Watched it 3 times. I'm more confused now than when I started. Wouldn't it be easier to say, connect the Transceiver to the Linear. The Linear to the Meter and lastly the Meter to... Yes the Antenna! We can figure out the rest. AND If we can't, we should turn off the radio and watch some TV.

I'm confused... I have just finished reading something on another website that said you should NOT have an SWR connected at all if you have a Linear amp in the setup. They said to check and set the SWR without the amp in line. THEN disconnect the SWR meter and connect the amp... I have an SWR/Power meter and a 25-35 watt linear with my Cobra 29 NW LTD Classic. I can't seem to get a straight answer on this. Thanks for the video tute. I took notes ;) Rich

Rich Paul ya know, I have the same problem when its all hooked up like this. My watt meter moves backward from 1.5 on the swing and swr is over 3! What's the deal? Same set up as you btw rich.

The coax coming from outside antenna, witch side of watt meter should it hook to. The outputs or inputs. No amp.

A good radio tec told me you can only check the antenna by its self, adjust it. Then hook up to the linier and leave it alone.

Question do u lose power by having ur amp farther away from ur radio? I always see ppl have their amps right on top of their radios. I don’t have space for it real close to my radio , closes spot is like six feet from the radio. In to old days you had all kinds of room in ur truck , now days they r jam packed with crap lol.

The only trouble with that way of connecting up is your measuring the SWR after the amplifier. The SWR can be completely different at the radio end. I was told by a radio engineer back in 1982 was to connect up as follows...aerial into amplifier, jumper into aerial side of the SWR meter, jumper from trans side of the SWR meter to the radio. That way you are checking the SWR at the radio, as that is the place you need to check the SWR. The radio is more important than the amplifier. I’ve had no problems since 1982. Your way is ok but you still need to check the SWR at the radio. Good video though.

canttelthetime That’s the way I was thinking it should be. If the meter is before the amp then the amp can affect the swr’s going to the radio if the amp raises them a bit.

Would you know if I could hook up a auto tuner would it be between the radio and the amp or the amp in the antenna because on my xiegu g90, the amplifier that I'm getting for it says not to run the auto tuner that is part of the radio so I'm wondering if I'm that and also on my Striker 995 should I put the auto tuner after the amp

Actually it really depends if you're wanting to keep an eye on the watch each coming out of your radio or the watch coming out of the amplifier.

thanks for video haven't had a linear for ten years got my ham lic but only can talk on certain channels on 10 meter radio on side ban had to watch video three time but me seeing the ant on box helped me out good video but not great

U should always check your SWR's before talking...most meters also check wattage and modulation also you Do check your SWR'S with the box off but leave the meter in line

The easiest way I remembered it years ago ,, no many how many things you have in line between your radio and the final antenna coax is : STARTING WITH THE RADIO “RR-AR” Radio To Radio -Antenna To Radio Although many times the SO-239’s are marked transmit and antenna . Transmit being “radio” .

The "box" is slang for the linear amplifier. Sometimes also referred to as a '2 pill' or '4 pill' etc., depending on how many RF power transistors it has in it. (The transistors look like 'pills'.)
