My sister and I met Angus Scrimm at a convention many years ago. He was absolutely the coolest, nicest guy you could ever meet.

What I LOVE about the Phantasm series is the fact that after all these decades, it's still the SAME STORY building on itself! It's not crappy meaningless sequels or reboots. It's the same series and every movie adds a piece of the puzzle. And it gets more intriguing with every new film. And I love Reggie because through all the dimensions, illusions, and mind-trips, he may not be able to make sense of all the shifts, but he remains true to himself. Even if he is just an annoying stray thought in the Tall Man's dreams, he looks into the abyss and screams: "I exist, I'll keep fighting, and I'll never surrender!" Gotta love 'im. Rest in peace, Angus Scrimm. Can't replace him, but let's find a way to keep the series going.

It's the same reason I love it too. But, without Angus Scrimm, I really can't see how the movies can continue, unless you made it about an entire new generation of survivors, and even then, it's pretty much a reboot, and those rarely succeed. :(
@TheJohno957 жыл бұрын
Although I just don't see it being the same without Angus, they could have the Gold Sphere Mike take up the mantle of the Tall Man. Two Mikes for the price of one! If they were going to try to make a whole new Tall Man, they would have to be very careful. Fans love that man. It's going to be tough. I won't be upset if they just stop here. But if they can find a GOOD way to forge on....Without a reboot!....I'm aboard.

Immensely enjoyed listening to this and smiled/nodded the entire time. Fan since 1979, and worked on Phantasm 2, 3 and 4--and even contributed ideas to the series. I used to love hashing things out with Angus Scrimm during evening walks and over dinners together (his interpretation was always that he was playing the Grim Reaper)--he was a huge part of my life, and I was his assistant. Loved discussing and debating "Phantasm" with those few phans I lucked out meeting over the decades (until the internet, this was a rare and treasured occurrence). Wonderful to finally see some lady phans out there piecing things together. A very well thought out analysis! You made my week! Best wishes, Kristen Deem

Phantasm has always been my favorite horror series. Love this theory you have. It's the same one I had. While I love ravager I do think it gave the series Closure. Personally I think it's hard this give this series a happy ending or a full ending. Like the tall man said "it's never over" :). So to me there really is not closure, and Reggie and everyone else will always keep fighting. I'm hoping they shot so much footage of angus while filming ravager that they're able to do a part 6 with those scenes.

Excellent analysis of this series. A very difficult series to examine because it appears to be so random and all over the place. I thought you brought it all together into a cohesive narrative. You don't give all the answers but for those of us who have seen the films it makes perfect (almost perfect) sense. I came to the conclusion after seeing Ravager that the Tall Man throughout different points in time in different dimensions is trying to enslave the world for his purposes. Mike, Reggie and Jody along with their dimensional counterparts seem to be consistent adversaries that that Tall Man by now knows he has to deal with across all dimensions that he encounters them. We as the viewer are given just a glimpse into this (never ending?) struggle.

That makes sense. Still makes me wonder why he refuses to kill Reggie. When he asks reggie why he's so interested in his friends, it seems like he's had this conversation many times. Every version of Reggie always picks his friends. The Tall Man could kill Mike and Reggie like it was nothing, yet all he does is ask Reggie to stay out of his way. Still confuses me. Hell, the gold ball confuses me. It's like the Tall Man used to be friends with Reggie or something.

I am glad I watched this video, it's nice to hear someone else with the same interpretation of the end of the film when the Reg-man dies... I didn't take that as Reggie actually dying, it was basically one universe's version of Reg passing away- Just as when the Tall Man dies and two seconds later another version of the Tall Man comes through the fork and discards the carcass of the dead Tall Man. What I have always loved about Phantasm though ever since seeing the first one back in 79 is that you can interpret it any way that you want to- the whole series is basically one big mind fuck and that is one of the biggest parts of it's appeal!! I love it!

Bill Hicks used to say: "We're all part of a collective consciousness experiencing itself subjectively." Personally, I don't agree with that, but it somewhat fits with some theories. 7:59 Why's Chunk holding that pistol like that?! Why do movie people always hold guns wrong?! He's got his index finger on the slide, his middle finger on the trigger, he's grasping it with a "teacup" hold, and his elbows are way too bent. 9:08 Not the first time we'd seen another one of The Tall Man's clone bodies replace a previous one that was destroyed. Palpatine got nothin'! 10:02 The hole in his head is supposed to be on the left side. How's it possible to screw that up?! 14:36 Why are they driving on the wrong side of the road? In the earlier ones, we always saw Reggie and other driving in the middle of the road for no reason. Plus, multiple characters were always crashing cars all over the place.

I've been a fan of the Phantasm series since I saw the first film back in 1979 which I was lucky enough to see it on the big screen at a local independent theater. You did a great job with this video and explaining the continuous storyline which can be quite confusing with multiple viewings of each movie is recommended in my opinion to understand the series. Also I think there will always be some loose threads especially because we're dealing with multiple universes and realities. But I like having a few of the outlying parts of the story left hanging so we can fill them in with different theories ourselves. Otherwise thank you for the great video and have an awesome day. 😎

The “Tall Man” May have had a farm and been a wealthy planter but was a mortician.... he was an embalmer in the civil war portion of Part 4. Phantasm ravager blew my socks off!!! I remember seeing this first movie at the drive-in before action movies were a big thing you had this movie. Michael Baldwin was a little ass kicker with a gun and drove a muscle power car, that's what really made the movie fun to watch and at the time being very scared of a door slamming. you commentary spot-on about what is going on in this universe and the fact that the tall man hat tapped in multiple universes. Phantasm Oblivion actually explained all of it and made it very clear and this is a battle that can continue until the end of time. I read in the dictionary one time what a Phantasm is and there are three definitions but the one that sticks in my mind that made sense was "a Dream Within A Dream" and that's more relative to what's going on. I was hoping they would make a series of this and I know you can't do it without the tall man now that Angus S has passed on but hopefully someone can take his place like a gender change, how about the tall lady and we would have to get the lady that played Captain phasma in the force awakens that would be cool if she's up for it. Danny Lyons I thought the Tall Man has several clones. When one dies, another activates.
@adamgray17537 жыл бұрын
Yes, Danny Lyons. I much prefer the multiple/infinite dimensions explanation than the dream one. The dream one is way too depressing and would be an end to the Phantasm franchise. The Infinite dimension explanation isn't certain death for the Phantasm franchise. Instead it provides the possibility of an eventuality where all of the surviving trio members from all of the other dimensions teaming up to create one heck of a bizarrely awesome army to stand up to the Tall Man. That's one of many many different possibilities for the sixth movie as far as I'm concerned. The end of the second movie proved the Tall Man having more than one of himself, Steven Chang. Since the end of the second movie the seemingly infinite numbers of the Tall Man has been getting played up more and more. I rather enjoy the fact the more this is played up the more Team Reggie ramps up the hope so nothing becomes "Fine... let's roll over for the Tall Man." BS.
@sigmacademy7 жыл бұрын
Don't think it's clones, IMHO, but rather quantum copies of himself, across time and space. Like if there was a 1000 parallel universes, the original could travel to all of them over time and link up with his double in that universe. And seduce them with a promise of unlimited power, it seems. The massive spheres seems a bit much, though. The disease could easily have done the job, and why build an army, if a bio weapon did the job for you? Or the original could have been killed and replaced with a quantum double - he didn't have the sphere technology in his time period, but he suddenly had it when stepping through the dimensional forks one day? It indicates he found it, or it was given to him, and yet he was able to replicate more? 0.o
@lonniemeyer72326 жыл бұрын
Danny Lyons until ravager,I always felt that the red realm was the realm of the dead. So when the tall man would be killed,he would walk back through the doors/silver prongs to live again on earth because he controlled it. Kind of like controlling the gates of hell. If you are sent there. Then you can just walk back though the door after being sent. However,ravager left me with many questions that will probably never be answered.

Reggie was always in a true universe. If you believe in multi dimensional space, then there would exist multiple Regis in multiple universes. It's possible that the tall man wanted Mike because he was a rare nexius: someone who exists in all knowable multiverses. Reggie, through his attachment to Mike, became a thorn to the tall man as well as a plaything. It's possible that the consciousness of the Reggie scene in phantasm 1, W and three was severed or dispersed if he was killed outside of the multiverse. As the beginning of phantasm 5 suggests

From Don himself: “I remember being at the premiere last year of ‘Phantasm Ravager’ at Fantastic Fest. I was sitting by director David Hartman and as ‘Ravager’ ended, the audience burst into applause. For both of us it was a huge relief, we had finally finished one of the most ambitious micro-budget movies ever made and our core fan base responded the way we hoped. It was a very long path, full of difficulty and hardship and we had suffered some losses. Our ‘Phantasm’ icon and good friend Angus Scrimm had passed just as post-production ended. But we had successfully finished what we considered to be the final chapter of this iteration of ‘Phantasm’… And then Dave and I went up onstage with the cast and did a Q+A with Tim League and I think the first question was, ‘When’s part 6 coming out?’ We heard this question again and again at subsequent screenings. “God love ’em, but ‘Phantasm’ fans are insatiable. Obviously, the loss of Angus makes the prospect of another sequel challenging. So I guess the short answer is that we aren’t currently planning another sequel at this time. That being said, we always do listen closely to what our long time fans say.” “In any case, next week, like a lot of people, I’m going to break open a copy of the new ‘Phantasm’ collection box set and watch all the movies in a row. Really looking forward to that!” RIP maybe we need to just appreciate what they have given us.. this is hands down my favorite franchise with Tremors being a close 2nd... But Don did say THIS ITERATION so maybe one day we get a complete remake/retelling but alas.. that is like making Evil Dead without Bruce Campbell as Ash.. do we really want another Reggie that isn't Reggie... Just like Tremors without Burt... Nope no thanks... But please Don if you still have original footage from the first film to use.. do something with that maybe 🤔

Personally, I prefer the idea that the entire Phantasm universe, or at least the fantastical parts, are all in Reggie's head as he battles dementia. The whole series seems to be unending with a heavy emphasis on anxiety and hopelessness, which fittingly correlates to the psychological turmoil dementia patients may or is already going through, and Reggie's constant encounter with The Tall Man is his way of fending off said turmoil. It's dark yet beautiful.

Very interesting video about the Phantasm-franchise. Unfortunatley I never found the time to watch all of them, although I wanted to for a very long time. By the way, I am still waiting for that Cronos breakdown...;)

At the core of Phantasm is confronting our own fears of death and dying. Whether the protagonists are transitioning both mentally and physically between dimensions or this is all just the fever dream of a dying, dementia riddled man is ultimately irrelevant. From the very beginning the Tall Man was a symbol of the looming fear of death and dying and is something we all have to face down. Reggie was fortunate enough to have his two best friends by his side in his final confrontation with death and whether it's an epic showdown with an otherworldly being in a nightmarish hellscape or just holding hands with loved ones in your final moments in a hospital bed, the battle is something we must inevitably face down... Loved the video!

I've always believed what phantasm is really saying is as you said at the end, that dreams are a gateway to infinite universes. Throughout the series we see all of them die and then wake up somewhere else. What's really happening is they are actually dying each time in that universe and then we follow them in another where they were connected to that universe at the time through dreaming. The tall man is either Morningside who went insane from the use of the forks, or an alien force that took his body, and is now no longer human but a collective consciousness throughout space time that controls himself in all these realities at once. Hence when one does another immediately steps through to take over. Now, firmly in guessing territory, I'd guess that since the tall man is separate from time as we know it, he has seen that these men, or at least Mike will be responsible for inevitably stopping him, so he tries to go back and kill all their different versions first, but at the same time is actually creating them into the very people that will eventually stop him, creating a paradox, which somehow, his conversion of Mike is key to escaping.

I think the real question is, who is controlling the tall man? Some kind of psychic 4th-dimensional alien being? Awesome breakdown, the movie makes a lot more sense now. I was confused as hell after watching it.

The story was never finished but the suggestion was that it was something called "The Overminds" in the comic book.

I like the interpretation that is implied in this video. Where the Tall Man was originally a kind and wise scientist and doctor but the years/decades/centuries/etc of him traveling through the fork and dimensions changed him into a supernatural tyrant, and maniacal supervillain. The more he learned, the more he experienced, the more he mastered the less human that the original became.

The 5 phantasm movies that make up the entire series are truly awesome. Much love for Phantasm. As a phantasm fan I really loved the final movie, Ravager. It was just great to see the original, ageing cast together one last time in a phantasm movie and i found it to be really emotional. I love the phantasm series so much. Its just so different from all other horror movies. Its the characters that makes it special. For me the movies are partly about the dark part of life that is losing loved ones and not being able to understand or accept why this happens, then finding them again. There needs to be a Directors cut version of phantasm Ravager with that includes the "giant dwarf" scene that got cut from the release version for running time reasons.
@Brooklyn_Ann2 жыл бұрын
Okay, I know your comment is 4 years old, but HOW did anything get cut for running time? Ravager was SO SHORT!
@Tony-19712 жыл бұрын
@@Brooklyn_Ann Yeah the movie does seem quite short. There are some of the cut scenes in the dvd extras. Don't understand why they cut them from the movie.
@Brooklyn_Ann2 жыл бұрын
@@Tony-1971 I also think it was a terrible idea to have that last scene with Chunk and Rocky post-credit. I wonder how many people missed it!
@Tony-19712 жыл бұрын
@@Brooklyn_Ann Yeah, i agree on that. Only time i usually watch the credits at the end of films is if i like the ending music theme. Sure someone once told me there are some sound effects of an egg opening at the end of the credits in the movie 'Aliens.' Ive never watched the film right the way through to the end of the end credits though, so i don't know if its true.

WTF ive been wating for ever for a new phantasm movie, saw all the movies they were my favorite horror movie that hadn't been written a script ending. I always believed that Quentin Tarantino should be the one directing a new one. If Brad Pitt would have actually been chosen for the role of mike like he auditioned way back, wonder how big this movie would of got.

Your cogent analysis dovetails nicely with the others of my favorite Coscarelli head-trips, the utterly singular BUBBA HO-TEP and JOHN DIES AT THE END, wherein the whole idea of "reality" is variously F'd around with, both with and without soy sauce. Or Bruce Campbell.
@vladyvhv95793 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that the credits sequences continue the plot of Ravager, showing that in the northern cold, they are able to start taking down the giant spheres with rockets/missiles. As such, I feel like a part 6 would be more along the lines of a true ending to the series. The multiple reality concept is much more in line with the narrative of the movie, than something like it all being in one Reggie's mind. Similarly, the reality where Mike and Jodie are both alive may not be the core realty of the series, but rather another alternate, which has more of a chance of our heroes winning. Something that would be interesting would be that if perhaps there was still some part of Jebbadiah that wasn't evil, lurking in the subconscious of the Tall man. And that by growing the second gold sphere in Mike, that part was able to sew the seeds of destruction for the Tall Man's evil. Perhaps the Jody-Sphere will be able to take over, as a new Tall Man. But one that is not evil?

What if both are true Reggie 1 did die peacefully in a bed surrounded by friends because he did take the tall man's amended deal once Mike was usless to him. Meanwhile other realm Reggie gave the tall man the finger and just felt Reggie 1's death through those mini fork things woke up ready to kick ass and sell ice cream.

The tall man is a mortician and the civil war scene is the tall man (incorrectly) using a gravity embalming technique to embalm mike on the field (as was done during the civil war, but not through the nose 😂) aspiration is done via the nose and, the brain was removed in pieces through the nose once the cribiforn plate is penetrated (but that was only done during the mummification process, and not modern day embalming)

A very interesting and insightful interpretation. Also a very direct approach on the unknown in real life. As we have so many questions on dimensional travel. It also states what happens to our state of mind between dreams and reality: and how both can intermix and blur into the other. Thank you.

I just saw V today. I loved it, but I could see why people hated it and couldn't "get it". This whole series remains esoteric and mysterious to this day. Low budget shows, but if people who hated this movie understood the struggle it was to even get it made.....sigh. That was an amazing breakdown. I got a lot out of this video. One can really see how Nightmare on Elm Street and Hellraiser took certain aspects of their plot devices from this series. Thank you for making the explanation/series overview so concise and clear.
