It's actually not uncommon for pregnant women to lose teeth - the baby doesn't get enough calcium it will take it from the mother's bones and teeth. Just fyi lol.

What I liked about this movie is the fact that it manages to stand out from the typical "nun possessed" subgenre. I think it was smart to take the approach of using science as the "dark force". I also liked how regardless of if it's by religion or science, the women of this genre are still controlled and used as they would be if it was a cult for a dark spirit. To me it's not a condemnation of religion or science, but of oppression in general.

Some of the themes are really interesting and touches of some primal fears for women, like lack of control of your own body, how you personhood can be lost when it comes to reproduction and how when you become a mother, your significance can be perceived as secondary to that of your baby. Not to mention the sexual violence and how even safe environments can be distorced and invaded by threats. It reckons back to how it is really hard for women to feel 100% safe, even more so in a new and unknown place
@chriswelter3859

Although nun horror has become a distinct genre, I must admit that the incorporation of science in this film was indeed refreshing. The nature of the baby remains ambiguous, leaving room for various interpretations. It could be a satanic entity, a deformed fetus, or even a genetically modified offspring of Jesus Christ, disfigured as a divine punishment for the antagonists' attempt to resurrect Him. It is commendable that this religious horror movie deviates from the conventional portrayal of Satan or demons as the primary antagonists. Still, the scares were cheap and there was a LOT of filler. The Omen prequel was better.

I admit that the movie isn't the best, but I appreciate that it addresses the idea of unwanted and forced pregnancy, something that I read was being used in a lot of the new horror movies ever since Roe vs Wade was overturned! As a woman I can understand how this can be used as nightmare fuel, the idea of having no agency over your own body, and are basically just a living incubator is terrifying. The idea that your child might be taken and used, while you are disposable, is equally scary!

The thing that all the scary nun movies totally miss is the fact that there is something about nuns that makes them inherently kinda creepy and the best way to use that in a film is through atmosphere and growing tension, not cheap jumpscares or overused horror tropes. You don't even need the supernatural element, just look at some of the crazy stuff that actually took place in convents in the Middle Ages or in the Magdalene Laundries and other Catholic institutions for "fallen women". Demonic nuns aren't half as scary!

I think this movie polarized a lot of people. Horror fanatics did not tend to enjoy or receive it well since it wasn’t really scary. But movie fans in general loved it cause it was so diff from Sweeney’s normal and it was crazy and scary compared to that. I mean it’s scary if u don’t like horror but if you are into the genre it both is not scary and does not have a good enough plot to overcome that fact 🤷🏻‍♂️

There are different types of gut horror reactions , and one a lot of people assigned female at birth are familiar with is being considered disposable and forced to carry a baby. So the jumps scares aren’t the movie’s strongest suit, but the underlying theme is one of the most horrifying, considering it’s not that far from reality

I don’t buy Sydney as a nun in this or even when they tried to make her look nerdy in Madam Web. There is nothing you can do to make her not attractive. I’ve only seen her in a couple of things. I refuse to watch euphoria because I don’t like exploitation that feels unneeded in media. I know what the show is about and I can’t stand a show that uses nudity and sex as a factor in the story. I don’t mind it being in a show or movie but as long as it’s an element not a crutch.

Fantastic episode as always!! I have a movie recommendation, " The island" (2005) directed by Micheal Bay. It, in my humble opinion, is a highly underrated mid 2000s Scifi classic. It had an interest plot and it got decent rating, but I hardly hear anyone mention it anymore. I'd just love to see your take. Thanks for reading

I loved this movie so much and absolutely loved the ending My dad and I think that the baby looks HIDEOUS. When we saw it in theaters the sounds coming from the baby sounded disgusting and like it was in pain. We thought that say that DNA truly was from Jesus himself, out of all the samples you could potentially have his DNA on, they picked it from his crucifixion… pain, suffering, and death. Wouldn’t that manifest in the DNA, so what kind of baby were you expecting. OR since no one really knows what the son of the lord looks like, it could be something inhuman looking and terrifying. For example if you look up what angels are supposed to “really look like” it’s kinda terrifying

Felt like I enjoyed this movie more than you. I actually want to see a prequel, of the wicked stuff that went down in that convent 500 years ago! Effectively spooky atmosphere, and I thought the protagonist turned in a solid performance.

Interesting , I have not seen this movie, a few reviews here and there, but ultimately they were mostly negative and I didn't feel the need to see it, however since just watching your run down, though not exactly negative, certainly not very positive, for some reason I want to see it now, so thanks, can't say if I'll like it or hate it, but wish to watch it for myself, you truly have a knack for this thing, so again thank you

Such a sad horrific movie. She went from a woman of faith to somebody who ends up killing her own " baby" in the end. I want to know what it looked like but I guess the point is to have us wonder about its appearance.

You must not have seen many horror movies. This was depressingly stale. Ahh yes, more old nuns that speak a language unknown to the main character. Ahh yes, another bird hitting the window scene. Ahh yes, another "almost gets away but gets caught". Ahh yes, another “main character wanders around the building and happens upon things that are supposed to be kept secret". That’s not even considering the whole theme of creepy religion stuff lol. Movies decent but not fresh.

This doesn’t actually line up with Catholic doctrine too well. 1) Mary was the immaculate conception, not Jesus. 2) I feel like this was made with the assumption that God forced Mary to carry Jesus when the reality is much more consensual

The movie is far from shallow or bland, the whole point is the church’s blind faith and predatory nature - but instead of child grooming (as with many cases), they groom an unsuspecting woman who is just looking for a purpose. Secilia starts off the movie blindly following orders and instructions but as she witnesses more of the horror she stops. She never questions her faith in God, but her trust in the convent. The reason they don’t show what the baby is at the end is because it doesn’t matter - it’s an abomination, a fake. It’s an odd movie for sure but it is unique in its portrayal of religion-based obsession and madness. It also doesn’t fall into the ‘possessed nun/priest’ trop that most religious horror movies use.
