Have a look on eBay for a used older one. Just make sure you verify with the seller that the router is 100% functional and that it's the version you want. That way if it's not you can have eBay give you a refund through their guarantee. Make sure you take the shipping costs into account when purchasing as well. Glad to hear about your positive results. Honestly, I must have watched about 10 other vids and none worked. Not one other mentioned the crucial fact of the two routers needing to be on the same (don't know the correct name) 'third part' of the IP address eg. 192.168.x.1 (both needed to be have x as the same number). This was crucial yet none of the others made this clear. Well done mate, brilliantly clear tutorial.

Thank you for making this video. A little longer content ahead.... Although, I couldn't connect the 2 routers using the WDS bridge setting (may be my router's problem) but, I could connect them using the "Universal Repeater" option. Since, the basic method for extending the Wireless signals Range via the WDS bridging & the Universal Repeater; seems to be the same, hence your this video helped me alot. Moreover, I searched on KZbin using phrases "How to...." But KZbin surprised me with your video resulting "How & Why to do.... & How & Why not to do....". That really helped me here. Keep up the spirit, thanks again for taking out the time off your schedule & making such an explanatory video. I just had a small doubt, in an another video of yours, you suggested that 2 wireless devices shouldn't interfere. Hence we keep the channels different e.g. Channel 1, 6 or 11. Here comes the question... Won't these 2 wireless devices, if connected using WDS bridging, their signals be interefering? Don't we need to mention different channels for them, if those are mutually connected using WDS bridging? My same doubt applies on Universal repeater mode too, if you could share an answer, that'd really really wonderful. Another short question...(even may be silly one) In your another video, suggested only 3 channels (channel 1,6 & 11) for home network optimization (throughout connecting multiple routers together), what if we've an another 4th router in the picture, which channel would we be selecting?

My main router connected to the modem where the fibre broadband comes into the house, provided by my internet provider, is a Huawei F2000 and the router I connected to it is a tp-link AC1900 Wireless. Richard, this was an awesome video. Very educational and easy to follow. I just have a few addl questions. 1) this tutorial you gave us...does this extend the 1st routers wifi range (acting as a wifi extender/repeater) or is this just 2 separate wireless networks that are connected together to be able to access the internet? 2) Can i do this same setup with 2 or more routers in the home? And if so, what would that enable me to do? 3) Physically, how close or far does the 2nd router need to be to the 1st router to wirelessly connect? Would it have the same wifi connectivity troubles as my tablet when i walk to the other side of my house? 4) Can you create a video to show us how to take a 2nd router or 3rd router and use it as a wifi extender or repeater?

I don't have access to a VM Super Hub 3 so I can comment on how to switch it from router to strictly modem mode. Here's a tutorial on how to do it www.digihelpdesk.co.uk/virgin-media-superhub-3-modem-mode/ but I can't verify it will work. If it does not work call VM and see if they can help you. If they can't ask if you can buy your own (Compatible) modem and use that instead. I have done that in the past myself but you have to make sure you buy a modem that's approved by VM. The issue I am having is that I cannot browse the web, and I have a note at the bottom of my screen that says no internet connection. I did disable DHCP on secondary. Could you offer any advise? Also, my other question is you did a video called "Turning A TP-Link WR841N/ND V9 DD-WRT 300N Into A Repeater Bridge WIFI Range Extender". Thanks Richard. I reallyenjoy your videos. I have a fairly unreliable fiber ISP in Thailand with a ZyXEL all-in-one fiber modem/router/wireless/4 port switch with a Cisco SPA-112 2 port VoIP phone adapter bridged to a LAN port. I purchased a dual WAN Asus BRT-AC828 router featuring some USB ports which can use a a SIM dongle or a phone tether in place of one of the WAN's. My intention would be to use the failover/failback options on the Asus router to help ensure 24/7 internet thus VoIP phone lines working for our business. ISP's tech can hardly get their own equipment setup properly so I am looking for suggestions on how to setup the two routers this way. I'd be happy to pay for the help and grab all the screen shots or video needed for you to make a tutorial afterward. If you are interested, please advise a way to communicate the details out of the public domain. Thanks again for your videos and efforts to advise those of us with less experience in home networking. -JD

Hi, Richard. Great video! Thank you for putting that together. Is there a limit as to what the distance can be to effectively connect two routers (wirelessly)? My cable modem is downstairs in the Sun Room and my office is on the second floor on the opposite side of the house. I have used TP-Link Extenders (plugged to the Electrical Outlet and then connecting by RJ-45 cable). I would implement this to improve the signal. In the sun room, my download is 70 Mbps. Up in my office, it is 10-15 Mbps. Streaming video is fine but just wanted to get better throughput.

Are you connecting the routers from a LAN port on the primary to a LAN port on the secondary using an Ethernet cable? They must be connected that way. Review the video to see how to connect them. If that is correct and it still does not work, I suggest resetting all routers to factory default settings and follow my video exactly (step by step) and it should work for you. @@richardlloydusa Thanks for responding. The modems have four LAN ports each and one port each mark DSL. They are both the same brand, SMART RG Model SR350N for one and the other SR360N

Thanks for your time and I have watched the video end to end last night then stopping and starting today while I run through the setup on another laptop, I seem to have my Netgear nighthawk set up and all the correct LEDs flashing but since I save all the settings after doing the WDS section, I cannot log back into 192.168.1.2 and check/change the DHCP sett ings.

Nice tutorial. My primary (Hitro cgn3) router doesnt have wds and secondary (N300 wnr 2003) got wireless repeater function. Is it possible to make secondary as extender wirelessly? Please let me know. Thanks

Again superior video. I was wondering about the QoS option on my router. It's a Netgear N300 which has QoS and currently have it turned on even though I'm using it as the primary router to feed my older routers for extended internet connection. Is QoS the same thing as WDS because I found another Netgear Router exactly the same and want to buy it and use it for wireless connection on the upper floor of my home. Thank you in advance for your continued superior information. Gary

Thank you very much for your thorough explanation. My primary modem/router was provided by my IP. I'm hoping I'm able to modify the settings to add my secondary router which is an ASUS RT-AC68U Primary router IP is 192.168.1.254 My secondary router has 2.4ghz and 5.0 ghz bands. Is there anything I need to do differently in the setup of the dual bands?
@richardlloydusa5 жыл бұрын
No the bands should not matter on the 5.0 GHz range. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Hi Richard, is it posssible to do a video with DD WRT firmware. To use as my second router, I have a TP Link Archer C7 v2 (ac1750) and have installed the newer updated version of DD WRT Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r36698 std (08/22/18). Problem is on Wireless setup, for Wireless Modes, the only options it gives me from the dropdown is: AP, Client, Client Bridge (routed), Adhoc, WDS Station & WDS AP - but no Bridge Repeater (which is the best option to use). As this video is to use WDS, which WDS option do I use for the secont router WDS Station & WDS AP

Will this reduce the internet speed for the secondary router in comparison to the primary router? Or it will reduce the speed for both or none?
@DeepikaAditya4 жыл бұрын
Theoretically the secondary router will have half the speed

Hi RL... my question has to do with reasons for changing log in info for the router. Is this mainly for threats from attacks via internet, or local threats?.... by local I mean persons within your wifi range trying to access the router for unauthorized access. Reason I ask,... I live in a very rural area, and closest neighbor is mile away... so attacks from anywhere in wifi access is very unlikely.... thanks.

Hi Richard, this is great and thank you for doing this video. It's of a great help. I wan able to perform step by step action on my routers and it did worked.. however the challenge that I faced was after couple of hours my internet option on my routers went red and modem was not communicating with the Dsl for internet it's been 2 day I am tying to fix it. Can you share some helpful steps which can troubleshoot this issue. Thanks again
@richardlloydusa5 жыл бұрын
Check your main routers WAN connection settings for DSL there is usually a keep alive setting that automatically will reconnect you if it disconnects (see your manufacturers website for the specifics) it's usually in the setup PDF. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

How far apart can the routers be? I want to put a spare router in my outdoor shop about 50 ft away from my indoor router. If that's to far, I can move the router indoors within about 25 feet of my shop, with one window in the house and one window in the shop as the only obstacles between the two routers. Nice video, thanks!

I am currently making a video on connecting three routers together using WIFI in a star configuration with the main router being at the center and the other two connecting to it. I will also be making another video showing how to cascade from one router to the next more like a serial connected pattern also. WIFI range is tricky at best even with a clear line of site as there are many things that can affect your range (router power, interference and the quality of the antennas on both routers. The best I can suggest is to test it and see what kind of result you get. The optimal way to connect two routers is using a network cable. I have a video on that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGa0e5VphJZssKs Thanks.

Hi, excellent video. But Can I follow the same procedure if I have two routers with both of them having internet access? I want access to my devices(like CCTV, PC, etc) which are connected to my secondary router while I am near to my primary router. (My Laptop -> primary router -> secondary router -> other devices like Laptop, CCTV, etc which are connected to the secondary router)

Unfortunately I just learnt that my Nighthawk R8000 router does not support WDS. Looks like I will not be able to bridge it wirelessly to the primary router. Can you confirm that this is the care or is there a different way to achieve the same result? Thanks.

Hi Richard, I have my R7000 as my primary router and really like it, so I bought a secondary router R6230 but after trying, I cannot see the WDS option anywhere... Is TP-Link better for this WDS setting? or Netgear is not supporting WDS? Maybe I'm not looking in the right option in the R6230..... Any suggestions?
@jamesontravick97604 жыл бұрын
There seems to be a few different steps when using a Netgear or Belkin Router as the secondary. Do you have any notes for them? I have gotten stuck trying to Enable the WDS Bridging.

Hi Richard, I have a Netgear R6300v2 as my main router and have an older Netgear WMDR3400 router that I would like to use as a WIFI extender could you do a video showing how to do that, Its not clear I both the routers need to have internet connection to be able to access the Netgear configuration interface?

Hi Richard. I had previouly connected my two routers successfully a year ago, thanks to you, but recently I had changes made in my network and now I have to redo this connection again. However, for the life of me, I can't remember how I connected the second router to get it set up and working. Here's the scenario, I have a modem and a router connected to my desktop. Where do I connect the second router to get it setup? Do I connect the second router to the existing main router? Can you please help me? Thanks!

you do not need to change subnet mask, just disable the dhcp server in secondary router.

Can you make a vid how to connect secondary router with DD-WRT to a primary non-wds router? I've tried but dunno how to do it. There is no site survey option on DD-WRT. I've tried with TP-Link WR940N V6 with the latest beta DD-WRT. Everything is way different there and I'm confused.
@richardlloydusa2 жыл бұрын
Fortunately you don't need WDS on the primary and you do have it on the WR940N so watch this video I made using a WR740 to do this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGishGmhnqajhcU Tell me if you sort it out with this. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

My ASUS DSL-N12U settings clearly say that speed will be halved! They are very precise with that.
