Dear Richard, thanks for these instruction. I actually used one your other guide hook up three routers. we have three floors; basement, fist floor and second-top floor. Basement router considered as main router (thus Verizon Fios router). Of course, all covid-19 craziness, and we all working from home (schools as well), realized that family still complain 'slow' connection, dropping connection..etc...also, you know all that smart home stuff (wifi lights, nest doorbell...etc...you name it!), I guess it may be pushing the limit. Where we live (NYC), of course all the houses are next to each other, way too much Wi-Fi traffic and overlapping channels (even if I setup your recommended channels, who knows what next door's wifi channel will be on). Maybe about time to update WIFI routers to WIFI 6, not sure if this somehow help or not. Apricated for any feedback!

You are most welcome. You may wish to use network cable to connect each router to each the other (perhaps you have already). This would make each router much faster than a WIFI connected router. With the amount of Internet traffic I would suggest that you have at least a 200Mbps service. Understand that streaming 4K on several devices as well as many other data demands will max out your Internet service quickly. Using the 5 gHz WIFI channels (where you can) would be more optimal as they are faster and don't overlap. They also have a shorter range which means the neighbors are less likely to be a problem too. You will have to play with the channels to find out which ones will work best. I'm glad and happy to know I could help you. Thank you for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

@@richardlloydusa yeap, actually what you are showing/teaching us is how to create a mesh network without spending $$$, using some base old routers that collecting dusts in the basement hah! my setup is a bit different of course..Verizon Fios ONT box in basement, from ONT ethernet cable hooked up to Verizon Fios router, from Fios router, LAN cable hooked up to network switch, the network switch has 4 port that ethernet cables goes inside wall in the house, one is first floor and one is top floor., so my Fios router considered as main router (in your example) and have another router on second floor that hooked up ethernet jack, and another router top floor that hooked up ethernet jack. In theory, speed should be very fast (FIOS 300MB plan), direct connect to router is fast, but problem is WiFi speed, so I am suspecting some overlapping channels or Verizon's own Fios router issue (maybe it can't handle too many devices), so thinking about replacing Verizon's own Fios router with my own router - just need to Google "how to replace Verizon's own Fios router with your own router" :-) and again thanks for excellent tutorial. I am guessing that you must be teaching at college or something :-)

Thats funny that I have the same WNR2000v3 sitting on my desk. Ive got DD-WRT running on it, an older build 29387, and its great for an older device. I have been playing around with doing the same thing, with 1 other small wifi AP, routed to my main PFsense computer as the main router... Got some VLANs set up too. Theres so many configuration options. Liked your video.

I run the DD-WRT firmware on it when I am not making one of these types of videos. I like to keep it stock and simple for that. It's too bad they never upgraded the firmware beyond 29387 (that I know works) but it is solid. Thank you for reminding me to revert it back to DD-WRT. All the best and thanks for watching as well.

Hi Richard I have 2 situations hopefully you have videos for or have a simple answer. First I set up a wired 2 routers set up from that video you posted because of the distance I never considered wireless. Now because the 2nd router ( Lynksys )still doesn’t quite reach I need to add a 3rd preferably wirelessly. In watching your 3 router video, when I went to find the 2nd routers IP address it’s the same as the first router/modem and I cant enter the 2nd routers login like I did to set it up. In fact the ipv4 default gateway dns server and wins server are all blank in ethernet status for the 2nd router. I can log into the main router (comcast modem) and when I look at connected devices the 2nd router isn’t on the list. Is there a way to connect a 3rd wirelessly to the 2nd or do all 3 need to be all wireless or wired not a mix?? The 2nd question is I have a netgear wifi extender Nighthawk x65 in my garage connected wirelessly to my neighbor’s Frontier wifi router, ( He Knows I cut his lawn and plow his driveway) It works great until the middle of my house which is only 1200 sq ft So I bought a second Nighthawk x65 But they conflict at times, can I just disable the DHCP and assign a different IP address to solve the distance as well as the conflict?? Also can I use a cable modem router in the same way as just a router is for the 2nd router in a 2 o 3 router setup?? If you have videos ill happily watch the videos if you send me the links.Thanks Mike
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 2 жыл бұрын
You're most welcome. The first router and the second router (or any other device on the same network) should never be assigned the same network. If this happens it will create an IP address conflict and this results to one or both of the devices not being able to communicate. Imagine two people with the same phone number, who would get the call? So resolve that issue as I show in the first video that you watched. Once you have that problem resolved then you can watch one of my many videos where I show how to connect two WIFI routers together and share resources and the Internet. Here's the link for those videos: kzbin.info/aero/PLnxXRLSlmSVO4wpXdNsAHMuGwwSv0hZtS Thank you so much for commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

@@richardlloydusa Hi I resolved the issue by watching the video on another router here at home and installed at my sisters house, and its working fine via a cat 6 cable 40 of 50 ft , but to add a 3rd router wirelessly connected to the 2nd do both the 2nd and 3rd router need to be in bridge mode or just the 3rd router??

Richard two questions. With my set up, so far all routers are connected by LAN to main router. Garage router I have to connected by WIFI because of location. 1. when connecting the garage router so it works on wifi with the third router which is connected by LAN to main router. I put the DSSID of the third router into the garage router ? ( because it is the wifi signal from third router which will give internet to the garage router? 2. The channel selection for the main router I changed to 6, do the channels of the other routers on the system have to be 6 also or do they have to be different from the main router. Thank you again for your advice. Satinder Sharma

Usually you can connect to the primary router using an Ethernet cable connected to one of the LAN ports an to your computer or you can connect to it using WIFI then you use your browser and it's IP address to log into it. Check the manufacturers website for your router there usually is a guide on how to do it step by step there. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Hi Richard, another demon video - really clear. I have a question..... From the Main router I have 2 ethernet cables going off in opposite directions. No 1 to a TP router and from that to an ethernet cable to a ethernet socket further on. No 2 goes to a Netgear router and from that THREE ethernet wires go off each to another TP router. Question when I set the MAIN Router to a channel say 6 - it looks like you leave all the routers other than that on Auto and they pick up the 6 - is that correct? Or do I need to set the others (say the No 1 TP to channel 1 and say the No 2 Netgear to 11) and then what channel for the following on three TPs on No 2? Its an old 1800's house with metre thick solid stone walls that won't allow a wifi signal from one room to the next! Also just to mention on Europe TP s the Survey button is called Scan. Would appreciate your guidance and thanks again for such clear videos. Thanks James
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 4 жыл бұрын
You want to avoid overlapping channels on any of your routers. I don't use the auto function because I never know what channel it's going to assign and I find that there is no guarantee that it will not chose an overlapping channel. 1, 6 and 11 are best for 2.4GHz and on 5.0 GHz as long as they are not the same you are ok. If the routers are far enough away from each other that the signal does not reach the other then they can be on the same channel but I wouldn't risk it as you never really know. Thank you so much for, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Something that should be mentioned is that routers with different chips often don't play together well. You could have a router with Broadcom, another with Atheros or possibly Qualcom. Sticking with the same brand and model of router is a safe bet if you don't know what chip they are using.

Richard. That was great. Installed 3 routers in a star-type configuration. The master router then brings the signal via powerline extenders to my home which is about 180ft away from main router and it works great (I do lose some 5Mbps out of 25, but I can live with that). Is there any way to reserve most of the band to my house by limiting the 2 slave routers?

Hi Richard, Sorry to contact you here, but would appreciate your advice: Wondering if I can turn dhcp off in a new (from the ISP) primary modem/router that will be used for voip and internet access only (wan), and use the secondary router's dhcp which is already configured for my lan? Wifi will be turned off on the primary and the second router will connected to it over ethernet. Have already assigned static ips ..
@richardlloydusa

I can't see why that would not work. Your could connect the ISP router from one of it's LAN ports to the WAN port on the primary router and leave it alone. More than likely that would be a better solution. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Okay Sir thanks so much for the insightful video teaching. It has increased my networking knowledge the more. SIR, would like to know if in case I connect or ADD the 4th ROUTER having choosed channel 1,6,11 what channel should I chose for the 4th ROUTER?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 2 жыл бұрын
You're most welcome. I'm glad and happy to know I could help you. Great question, it depends on the physical location of the 4th router but it's unlikely that it will be in the same WIFI zone as all three other routers. So choose the channel of the router that can't be seen at the location of the 4th router. The reason for using 1,6,11 is that they don't over lap but that's only important if they are in range of each other. For instance, if you can't see or detect router 1 that is using channel 1 where the fourth router is then use channel 1 on the 4th router. I will be doing a WIFI optimization video soon. Thank you for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

I purchased a tp-link n300 and am having trouble connecting to it. I have tried the reset many times but it always resets back to the 192.168.15.15 address. I have researched this IP address and it seems that this address is used for private networks. I have talked with sellers tech's and they think I don't know what I am talking about. I have tried log in to the router on different computers with the same results. ANY ADVICE?

The IP address on your router are fine and can stay the same. The IP addresses for the other two routers should stay under the 192.168.1.64 range so they don't ever conflict with something the DHCP server is going to dish out. Use 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 for instance. Thanks.

The IP on main is 10.0.0.1 with range of 10.0.0.100 to 10.0.0.254 while the Tp has 10.0.0.20 to 10.0.0.80 and had its dhcp disabled. What can I do

This was just what I needed. My main router (Asus RT-AC3200) connected by ethernet to Asus RT-AC87U which is connected to a TP-Link 940n as recommended by you. Unfortunately, when the TP-Link is in AP mode, it shows no clients connected even though they actually are connected. Please see community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/170804. This issue has gone uncorrected for over a year. Is there an alternate router you could recommend for this service? Thanks Kerry Rock

Instead of buying another router (I have a WR940nV3) you may be able to update the router to the DD-WRT third party firmware and get around the bug. This is only possible if you have a Version 3 through 6. Here is a video I made on how to do this here kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHLUh5qhi8iardE the latest firmware is here dd-wrt.com/support/other-downloads/?path=betas%2F2020%2F06-15-2020-r43420%2F I just upgraded mine to the r43420 beta firmware and it is working fine. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

I did try the suggested firmware and it seems to have bricked the router. Several resets have not restored the factory firmware, so I am returning it. Still need to select another router to replace it. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Kerry Rock

@@richardlloydusa do you have any suggestions for my question? Like, could I put in a different firmware and get wds mode? Or are the newer TL-wr841n routers not capable at all? My question is in the newest comment on this video. Thank you.

Yes you can do that but I don't recommend it as it will not work well and you will never know which router you are connected to. I will be making a video on when you can use the same SSID's and when you should not. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

great video just what I was looking for. I have a Amped 175 that I use for my living room router/AP and it has POE I am assume I can still use the POE from the injector plugged in to the Wan port as long as the injector isn't plugged in the main wireless router? I have a Pfsense box at 192.168.1.1 and DD-wrt on a Netgear NightHawk R7000 on 192.168.1.2 I am using the Pfsense box to pass out DHCP and my main wireless is from R7000 I am going to add the Amped 175 to my wireless network to cover every thing on the inside by using WSD. I have an outdoor high power AP can I add that to my network?? It does not have wds and is also POE it is a wavLink AC600. With out WDS I bet it will cause a problem Thank you for any advice

@richardlloydusa 2 жыл бұрын
You're most welcome. Ethernet limit is 100 meters but that is for each segment. So you can use 100 meter length between the first and second router and another 100 meters length (segment) between the second and third router and so on. If you put a switch between two 100 meter segments that would work too. Use CAT6 cable or better where ever possible. Thank you so much for commenting, watching and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

My main router's IP address is 192.168.18.1 so what should be the address on my secondary router ? thanks
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 4 жыл бұрын
The next router should be 192.168.18.2 but I suspect that will be the last IP address your network will allow. See (www.calculator.net/ip-subnet-calculator.html?cclass=any&csubnet=30&cip=192.168.18.1&ctype=ipv4&printit=0&x=52&y=21) How many devices do you have connected to your current router and what model, type and manufacturer is it? Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Rather than having three separately named wireless access points can you assign all three routers the same SSID and password or will havoc occur ?

Good question. I never recommend using the same SSID and password on all or any of the routers primarily because of the way WIFI connects. Clients connect to the first responder not the closest or fastest available connection so you may be connected to the furthest router and not know it because the ID is the same. In this case the routers may or may not connect to each other correctly either. As you said ,"Havoc will occur." maybe not all the time but enough to drive you mad. Thanks.
