You should be happy that the threadmill didn't allow you to run a marathon. Been training for a year, ran 26K last week and got the 42K comming up next week, I'm not sure if I can do it without injuring myself yet. Lots of people undertake it without proper preparation, and while you can power yourself through with sheer willpower, you are going to severely damage your body in the process (fractures, runners knees, shin splints, tons of other inflammations,...) + the whole eating and drinking aspect is not easy. Unlike cycling, running puts your legs under a lot of stress the entire road.
