There’s been a lot of confusion with commenters regarding the court of public opinion which has no balance or merit on this case and finally the law. It was a tough trial with very upsetting evidence provided and made for some very uncomfortable listening. But the jury has decided and hopefully, I mean hopefully everyone can begin to move on after this judgement.

You are so right, consent is the important word, consent aspect of this case. Why would she consent to the all that physical and emotional abuse she endured. He's a very fit man,he's a very strong person, he is not stuck for someone as he has his partner/wife at home. It all went to his head. There's no winners in this case. I don't know many women who follow MMA, and they wouldn't know of the reputation Mr Farrell described. I had no idea of half the things he does, or is alleged to have done, and it's partly because the stories are hidden in the sports section or are only published on obscure MMA sites. Anyway, thank God she's vindicated. I do think the DPP would have taken on this trial if James Lawrence hadn't given his (false IMO) statement to Gardai about having intercourse with Nikita that night. He really muddied the waters with his fantastical nonsense.

Yes Lawrence came forward with a statement to Gardai claiming he had sex with Hand, last time I checked 2 people having sex wasn't an offence. Based upon the statement Lawrence gave to Gardai, Hand then also accused Lawrence of assault, because if sex between the 2 did occur, it wasn't consensual as far as Hand was concerned. Nevertheless, the accusation of assault by Hand against Lawrence was still made, and Lawrence was cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to the 2nd question which was "do you believe that James Lawrence assaulted Nikita Hand?" In which the jury voted no. So surely if Hand accused Lawrence of assault and it was found to not be the fact, well then surely she would be liable to pay his legal expenses, although I have since found out that McGregor has already said he is covering all of Lawrence's legal expenses anyway, so it doubt she will have to pay them.

Thank you Terry for the analyisis of the verdict. The jury spent a long time deliberating on this case and they are the only ones who had to pay full attention to every detail besides the judge and senior counsel of both paries. I agree with your analysis of the verdict. I believe the jury performed their duties admirably and all must accept this verdict as a just application of the law. It is wrong to jump to conclusions without countenance to the full facts. Hence many of those who commented on your forum here jumped to conclusions without objective perspective of all the facts wherein they were expressing their subjective thinking beliefs and attitudes. Many concluded the plaintif put herself in harms way hence deserves what she got. But believing that she got what she deserves is morally wrong. If someone puts themselves in the way of harm this does not mean another can execute harm to that person. If someone puts themselves in the way of harm they are making themselves vulnerable where it is the duty and responsibility of those in the presence of vulnerability not to harm that person rather make sure to protect that person. I believe the jury was of a final mind of consensus that they distilled all to that of the plaintiffs vulnerability and the defendant took advantage of this hence causing the plaintiff harm and by that assaulted the plaintiff. This is my personal opinion.

No woman would put herself through the media scrutiny and torture by public opinion for six years if she was lying. Judge jury and justice prevailed. What factors in this case would have encouraged the DPP not to go ahead with a criminal prosecution? We have heard that there was not enough evidence but what would of decided the final decision to direct towards Civil proceedings. From todays result, the jury have ruled in Nakita's favor, makes no sense that DPP could not see what the jury seen. Probably a stupid question.

@huzcer well, let's be honest, she was hardly mixing in the best of circles was she? I think personally the evidence suggests she lost her house due to breaking up with her then partner for him thinking she'd probably cheated (she was lying to him via text the whole time she was claiming she would have been distressed). I think a far more likely story is she went out for two days on the trot, he partner was not very happy with her and somehow she got some bruises, had to say it was rape as she was losing her house and perhaps had custody battle ahead, then had to stick with the story out of desperation and pride. The jury was utterly innapropriate. I have no idea about her "home invasion" but it all sounds quite fishy.

I’m assuming she got the case taken as a type of free legal aid where the barrister took her case on the basis that if he won he would win his costs back thinking that he would win the case And he would be paid by the costs she was awarded I’ve just done a year of law and the barrister on free legal aid will only take a case he believes he will win then if he wins it will increase his profile and his name and he will be relatively famous which is exactly what happened in this situation- the barrister did a good job for Nikita her case was pretty open and closed for a civil case because the evidence was all over her body both physically and mentally

If everyone is equal, then I'd imagine you can't go taking issue with the gender of the jury members without implying that men and women are not equal.
