This bittersweet track. A theme song from late stage addiction. Was a stone’s throw from everyone I love and know, but I couldn’t show up looking like I did. All I had was this harmonica and strange, mystical, empathetic voice

It's not about any woman though, the whole song is about the immense stress he experienced from false rape accusations in 2014 and 2015. His health really suffered from that along with the court hearings. As he says, he almost died from it. No wonder he was almost crying while singing this in the studio.

I was merely quoting the song. Oberst creates characters in his lyrics often to express his own experience, as you mentioned. The beauty of these characters is that his audience can so easily translate them into their own lived experiences. It takes a great amount of lyrical talent to to that. I never meant to detract from his distress; I simply admire his ability to communicate and evoke emotion.

Emma Owens > Except that in this particular song he's specifically talking about himself and the woman who falsly accused him.

It's a mass grave A dollar-fifty resting place On the north face It's a rope I've gotta climb I'm a stone's throw from everyone I love and know But I can't show up looking like I do In an old suit my hair is slicked up back nice and smooth In a courtroom, sweat rolling down my back It's a bad dream I have it seven times a week No it's not me But I'm the one who has to die Needs a cold draw to slow his tachycardia In a dark bar the world just melts away And he feels fine If he can just lose track of time It's a good sign when he can't stay awake On a slow day the rain against the windowpane of the cafe She spills the coffee grounds And the same thought hits her like cinder block Life's an odd job that she don't got the nerve to quit Yeah it's just there At the bottom of those spiral stairs It's the World's Fair The future's on display In the still night They turned on the electric lights And the crowd cried out Everyone looks so amazed

John Kashner Please stop being a clown. They don't give Grammys to great artists or songwriters at the time they make their best work. Bob Dylan received his first Grammy in 1973 for album of the year for the concert for Bangladesh, but that was obviously George Harrison's project, not his. His first real Grammy was for You Gotta Serve Somebody in 1980. He received that award because the Grammys realized: "Bob Dylan is arguably the greatest artist of the 20th Century, and he's won exactly one Grammy for someone else's project. We must correct this." Of course it cannot be corrected because The Grammys are run by the dumbest people on the planet. The Clash are considered by just about every rock expert as one of the top 20 greatest artists in the rock era, yet they won exactly Zero Grammys during their recording career. They were given a Grammy in 2003 for Best Music Film, around 20 years after disbanding. Ironically, the Grammy tribute to Joe Strummer by Bruce Springsteen in 2003, after Joe Strummer was dead, is considered one of the greatest tributes in Grammy history. Too bad that the album London Calling, one of the top ten works of art in the 20th century, wasn't even nominated for Album of the Year. None of the Clash albums were nominated. Neil Young's greatest works in the 1970's were not even nominated. He didn't receive one Grammy nomination for Harvest, Heart of Gold, Old Man, Needle, Hey Hey My My, Live Rust. Zero nominations while he made his greatest works. A Grammy win or nomination is absolutely the worst measure of an artist's accomplishment.

In 2004 I was sitting in a classroom and listening to a mix tape the girl I was in love with made me for the first time. Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh was the first song on the tape, man I was so transported, it was the first time I heard one of your songs, and it became like the soundtrack of my senior year of high school. It's so cool to hear this album today, because your music was such a big part of my growing up, and to hear a song 14 years later, that is so adult and mature and that I can enjoy now, just sent chills through my spine as soon as it came on. Thank you for this and for keeping on making music.

I just want anyone who still comes back here anymore, to know that I took Conor over T. S. Eliot on a Reddit debate. I used this song as a reason. T. S. Eliot lied his whole life about being Anti-Semitic and love that was reciprocated that he said wasn’t. Then preceded to write for the Anglican Church. Quite clearly this song proves how the virtual opposite nearly destroyed our generations greatest songwriter. It’s not all over yet, but oppression is going away because of people like him.
