I would also say that this video is a testimony of the lack of skill for the original instructor Andrew had. It seemed like many tips and instructions given in this video were new information to him even though he has already been driving quite a bit.

But it's my understanding that he passed his test, then stopped driving for the most part. Like any skill, you lose it if you don't use it. I don't think it's a reflection on his original instructor. It's a reflection of atrophy of what he learned due to not continuing to use and develop the skill.

@@MikkoRantalainen I would say it may be more about understanding how people learn and then targeting that. Like a weakspot in a boss fight. I think I understand Andrew's learning style here because its similar to my own; understanding the reasons behind doing something helps concrete that into the mosiac being produced. For example, the checking of the mirrors when making course adjustments - he mentions a few times (over different videos) he doesn't understand why. I think the logic here is something like: cars should be staying behind me, bicycles cannot even keep up with me and I would already have seen the ones ahead, pedestrians behind me aren't going to be an issue, so there is nothing to check for. Well, people in cars do overtake at silly points usually with little thought (I work in car insurance, trust me on this). Cyclists are usually slower, but not always (bad traffic conditions for cars) - getting into the habit of doing it at all times makes it less likely to not do it when its needed. Motorcyclists are actually your biggest concern, since they naturally filter (the advantage of not having a big space-hogging vehicle for personal transportation). Having that explained would probably help him do it, because he sees the reason to do so and probably doesn't learn well by rote (muscle memory is always useful, though).

I just want to say what a fantastic instructor you are Richard. I passed my test around 14 years ago now and I remember it took me around 2-3 years on/off to eventually pass. Really goes to show that one or two refresher lessons really would go a long way for a lot of people who have at least once driven to a test passing standard. I'd thought about taking a lesson when starting to drive again after around a 4 year break, even though previously I'd driven for 6. Instead, I binged this channel and Ashley Neal for months and months, before really taking it easy with my first attempts back on the road. I was surprised how much better my observations and general awareness are now compared to what I remember of driving 4 years ago, even with 6 years and probably nearly 100,000 miles of experience. I'm not second guessing myself like I sometimes was, and I'm always aware of hazards from behind through using my mirrors properly, even before they become a problem. That skill was drilled into me from KZbin and changed my driving from the moment I got back behind the wheel.

I seriously wish I could book you for a mock in Lowestoft Richard, cause my test is coming up in two weeks today and it’s a strange situation. I’m American and I’ve been driving all over the world for 27 years (started over here in 1997 on a motorcycle) before I moved back to the U.S. Now it’s come to the point of my year is coming up to the switch and you seem to be the most knowledgeable, straightforward instructor I’ve ever come across. I booked a lesson a couple of weeks ago and the instructor said I needed to keep to an auto, even though I’ve driven manual cars all of my driving life. It was the whole “that’s all they drive” mentality. My current car is a Alfa Romeo Giulietta and of course it’s a manual, in fact I’m using it to take my test in because it’s easier to drive than any auto I’ve ever driven.

I'm finishing my practice hours now, and wanna say that you guys have a nice road markings in UK. Here in Armenia it's a godsend when we have central double/single line on the road, so you don't accidentally get into the other side. I can't imagine how easier it would be with proper and fresh road marking. At least test route is that bad, but from the other hand if you can drive on such roads, you'll be good on better roads for sure. Though driving test here is generally easier, but in some ways harder. For example, parallel parking should be usually done between two cars with pretty slim space between, and you have to do it in one go, without forward-backward corrections. From the other hand, you can just have one error or you failed, there is no like minor/major errors to accumulate. So if you can park somehow in parallel/between the lines, properly turn left or right and generally don't rush, you'll pass.

I passed 1st time. Only one minor fault: Gears. On clutch, car I scrapped was still on it's original clutch at 185,000 miles and that was also for towing caravan. Using rev matching is important, especially when towing.

I actually had a good examiner who I believe did something at the end of the test to give me the benefit of the doubt. During general chat at the start of my test I happened to mention that if I went for a job interview & failed, that I would ask if I did anything wrong in the interview that I could work on. Mid way through the test he had me do a move off on a hill at an angle to which I said “ah my weak spot, I haven’t do much practice on that”. He had me do it twice at which time he said “when we are back at the test centre I have something I will tell you”. At that point I thought I’d failed. There were three ways back to the test centre and we were looking at going the main way back, we were going 50mph in line with the limit approaching some lights when all of am sudden he said “can you turn right at the lights”. So very quickly I had to do my mirror checks, indicate, check my blind spot & cross a lane while slowing down in time to turn off. When we got back to the test centre he told me I had passed with 3 minors, 2 of which were for my weak manoeuvre. He told me what I did wrong on both & then told me what I needed to do in future. He took on board what I said about wanting to know what I did wrong and instead of making me do it a third time which may well have lead to a fail, I believe he decided to drop the late call on me to see how I coped under pressure. In that moment I probably went more on instinct & did all my checks correctly as well as slow down safely. I believe my other minor was speed related as a 30mph road changed to 20mph, but I missed the initial sign, but did reduce my speed by the smaller second sign. Amazingly I aced my parallel park which was also my weakest of all the parking manoeuvres. Apparently according to my instructor my driving standard was high which explains why he had me at some of the worst roads for people & traffic just popping out in front of you. He was also a,aged at my couch control for someone that had never had a lesson. I grew up in a rural area so had driven on private roads many times. I’d pretty much mastered the hill start at 10 long before hill start assist. I’d never driven a car with ABS, Traction Control or power steering at that point. He did have to break a couple of habits that aren’t suitable for the roads like left foot braking & late braking. Slight hangover from my racing days in my teens. When you have a good instructor everything is so much easier.

33:54 I think people can get confused by the lights after the turns. Sometimes they do apply to you! The main telling point is the solid white line! If there's no solid white line then ignore the lights unless it's a temporary traffic light. Most of the time there isn't a solid line after a turn but sometimes there is one and you do have to stop at a red then. 🙂 But also there'll be two lights on both sides instead of just one. But it's easier to think of the solid line.

Interesting video. After looking multiple videos on this channel, I still think that UK road code has made a mistake when it requires checking mirrors before turning on your turning signal. Turning signal is about intent to do something but according to UK rules, you cannot turn on the signal when you know you're going to take a turn, only after checking the mirrors in between. I cannot see how that extra delay could possibly improve safety. The rationale that it might scare other drivers speaks more about the fact that UK drivers are familiar with the wheel rotating almost instanty after the signal coming up which is basically proof that the current system doesn't give enough time to react safely.

there's a way to set up side mirrors to diminish blind spots significantly, you should check that out (the car should not show up in the side mirrors, it should appear if you lean into looking in that mirror [for parking]) i only rev match using the gas when i gotta downshift going up a steep incline, because I'm trying to maintain speed and get more power/torque as I'm bleeding speed going up to start my car up i tend to press both the clutch and the brake, i used to drive an automatic before i guess i picked it up from there

It would be really interesting to see you do a mock test on a driver with decades of experience. I've done a few driving tests over my lifetime (initial one, the army (2 of) and another job that I had with a company car. One thing that I've noticed is that there is always something to learn. People who think they know everything and are perfect probably don't know how bad they are. The army ones were very interesting because they were weeks long driving courses that included things like convoy travel, dangerous goods, and of course off road. Oh, I'm in Australia, and I think I could pass a UK driving test, but there are a couple things I noticed. In Australia it is not normal to change lanes on a roundabout. You leave the roundabout on the lane you entered on. This means that if you are going right on a two lane roundabout (3rd exit us.), someone entering opposite can enter and turn left with no conflict. Also parking - we are not allowed to park within 3 meters of a center line, or on roads with no center line you are not allowed to park within three meters of cars parked on the opposite side (residential, us.) Most of everything else is the same as far as I can tell, except that most highway speed limits are posted, else it is 100km/h (60mph). Unposted residential streets are now 50km/h, it used to be 60km/h when I learned to drive.

My dad was ex UK army where he was trained to be an advanced driving instructor. one thing out of the many things i learned from him is a driving licence is a licence to learn. passing the test means you can drive unsupervised and know the basics of driving but there is so much more to learn i have discovered thanks to my dads tuition. as for the roundabouts in UK, most roundabouts dont have the space for seperate lane entrances to take a vehicle round to their exit, so some have no markings on them, bigger main junction roundabouts will have lane markings to be followed but even then, the way some are designed it can confuse not confident drivers and drivers new to the area. so the rule is to give way to the right and vehicles on the roundabout. a rule of thumb is if you can get all of your vehicles wheels onto the roundabout before the car to your right can get its front wheels over the give way line, then you can proceed. similar to the part in video about your now committed and have to follow through as stopping will probably cause an accident.
