Driving on my own was weird at first but I was fine. I think I was doing this well because I was mature enough. I'm not sure if I was dealing with it properly, if I was younger and less mature. I hear the youngens moan about their insurances being higher just because they're young but the statistics speak for themselves.

Just to add: mistakes are certain to happen. I passed last month and there have been a few situations where I’ve tried to pull away in second, selected the wrong lane when not focusing and made a poor judgement on when to go. Embarrassingly for me, I tried to pull away on a roundabout and kept stalling. The cars behind me were blaring their horns and the panic settled in. Turns out, I was trying to pull away with my right foot on the brake!! So don’t feel bad if you make a mistake and definitely don’t dwell on it - they happen so that they don’t happen twice and you are 100% not alone. Thanks for the vid Richard!

Most important thing is to be safe. I just passed my test after I had to stop in the middle of the roundabout because a car with no indicators came flying in from the right, but it was the best thing I could have done in the situation, and the examiner appreciated it.
@michaelthomas3646 Жыл бұрын
mistakes will always happen it is part of being human regardless of how well, and safe you think you are, just remember these mistakes and be prepared for others to make mistakes everyone has been there at some point in their driving lives. this is from someone that has been driving 30 years. just remember do not leave the scene of an accident even to turn your car around, only take pictures and any video footage you got from a dashcam, and also you got to declare any footage, and share any footage with anyone who asks for it in an accident either by e-mail or something private. had a brand new driver who pulled out of a side junction on my left a few months ago, panic set in, he left the scene, but by the time I was ready to speak to him he had returned. not everyone would be as understanding, and would call the police if you leave an accident scene rather than parking up properly. but given him the benefit of doubt to allow the house owner access to their driveway, and the fact it was a very tight side road for a brand new driver to manage to reverse down, and with panic would have done even more damage to cars parked along it trying to reverse along it. he paniced that he would also loose his licence, but I have been in a simular situation as a brand new driver being in my first year of driving. so I know what it feels like, and said the best thing was for him to get his car repaired, and experience is how you learn stuff. so he got off lightly compared to any other driver out there that would claim whiplash or something to get the police out and cause more problems for a brand new driver. I had done stuff to try minimise any injuries and possible car damage which was a write-off by my insurance, but neither of us were injured enough to need medical attention.

Tip: try putting your bag or coat on the passenger seat! The first time I drove alone, the feeling of 'empty car' freaked me out a bit - no instructor, no family, just silent empty seats!! So for my first few journeys after that, I put my backpack in the passenger seat. It's a small, random thing, but not having an empty seat next to me genuinely helped me feel more relaxed about driving alone, just for those first few journeys. Do what works for you and don't be too hard on yourself -- you'll feel totally at home on the roads sooner than you expect! :)

I passed my test then didn't actually drive for six years. Almost straight after I passed my dad died, and for two years I wasn't mentally stable enough to drive. And then I didn't want to drive as I didn't have a car and wasn't particularly keen on buying a car. I eventually had to four years after that when my mum got ill and needed driving around. I had a neighbour who took me out a few times for lessons, but I watched a lot - A LOT - of your videos and they have been unbelievably helpful. It has taken me over a year to get the hang of driving and I no longer poop myself every time I get to a junction.

They key things for me were: if you find yourself in a tricky situation where you don't know what to do, take things slow and remember what your instructor told you. don't let other road users or passengers rush you, go at a speed you feel comfortable go to an empty carpark on a Sunday evening and practice your reversing, trust me, it will be very useful. don't beat yourself up for mistakes, it happens to everybody and it shouldn't put you off driving. don't completely rely on google maps and waze, use signs and road markings too.

A great video. Been driving 18 months. After passing my test, my instructor told me to go for a drive on my own without any passengers. I got too nervous and didn’t drive for a week. To overcome it, I went halfway to work with my partner following behind and in the evening when I knew it was quieter. I knew the route. After doing that a few times I then did it on my own (an hours journey). Then a month later my usual route was closed and panicked as I didn’t know where I was going. Turned out I didn’t need to panic, you have the skills. If it’s an area I’m diving in that I don’t know, I go a little under the speed limit to give me a bit more time. Only done the motorway a couple of times and got nervous before setting off. Not long after joining the motorway I settled into it. Have had lots of practice on country roads. My partner had to show me how to fill the car up with petrol as I didn’t know how and it wasn’t taught in my lessons 😂 After passing I didn’t want to drive on my own and now I don’t want passengers 😂 Certainly picked up a few skills since passing, especially anticipating what other drivers and pedestrians are going to do.

It is so good giving out these advice. When I passed just shortly before covid and had noone to practise with, was completely freaked out, made mistakes,,drove into a one way street opposite direction, city drive with no idea where to go, noone to recommend a suitable car to buy,,or anything. But I researched and choose a great car reliable, low cost. I also felt pressurised to go and drive a lot, on motorways,in the city but I resisted pressure and I decided to do weekends drives, basic small drives and building up distances, unfamiliar places and it is still hard and make mistakes at times but I always review and learn from it. Great tips as always! Thanks

Passed my driving test yesterday and I still can't quite believe it! The test itself (despite my nerves beforehand) was really pleasant in hindsight, which considering it was Swansea/Britton Ferry/Britton Ferry Roundabout in morning rush hour (if you know, you know) really surprised me 😂 My manoeuvre was reverse parallel parking and I also did an emergency stop! Along with my lessons, I also watched (and still watch) your videos, Richard! This video couldn't have popped up at a perfect time 😊 Thank you!

Richard you are the best instructor, I have had no instructor as there is no space in my little town and no driving lessons, I watched all of your videos that I felt I needed advise with. Had my test today past first time with 6 minors! So happy and appreciative of you're methods! Thank you! Have to drive up and shake your hand one day haha Keep it up rich 👌

Wow, this is literally my situation right now. I bought my first car recently... But passed almost 7 years ago (didn't have the finances to get one before). Ive been terrified to actually take it out, but have been slowly building up my confidence by going on short trips and watching your videos.

Almost exact story as mine. Haven't driven in 16 years after almost passing the test in Poland and had to learn absolutely everything from the scratch.

My 1st drive was in my newly restored 1967 Mini. I sat in the car for nearly an hour as I didn't know ehere to go and I was obviously sat on my own. The sun was out, it was bkazing hot and I just drove around my local town. Was a great day.

What a great video to find after passing last week Thursday! Thank you for the assistance throughout the videos. I drove back home from the test centre confidently with no incidents. Although I'm waiting for insurance to be settled so I can start driving independently.

Just passed my test yesterday with 2 minors (one was for hesitation, I waited for a car to go at a give way marker even though I could have gone as he was relatively far, second was for correcting my reverse bay park) so excited to get on the road on my own but slightly nervous also. Your videos have been a great help on my driving journey thus far and will continue to watch

i had not driven for 20 years and it was terrifying to start again. i took 7 refresher courses and you are absolutely right - there was nothing to refresh 🤣 it was truly starting from the very beginning. i’be been driving familiar routes of varying distances but i literally memorize the routes right down to which lane to use at which stretches. parking and navigating tight spaces is still a challenge but it does get much better with practice. thanks for all the awesome videos! they have helped so much and my kids are super happy mummy can drive them around now 🫶🏼

Hi Richard, I’ve very recently passed my driving test 😄 I’ve been watching your videos and they have been so helpful, you really understand the mindset of a learner or a nervous driver and you have such a good way of explaining things. So I just wanted to say thank you very much!!

really useful video, passed my test yesterday on the second attempt (at Erith in fact, the test centre in your "hardest place to pass?" video) and your videos played a massive part in teaching me good driving sense, technique and confidence. I think I'll keep watching this channel probably for years to come to keep me thinking critically about my own driving even though i have the certificate. thanks for all you do!
