I always appreciated the 3 stage breaking approach. Gets away from the idea that your pedals are switches. You start light, then gently increase to slow the car, then gently lighten as you reach the speed you need or stop. Keeps the car settled throughout, starting slowly doesn’t surprise anyone behind you, and ending lightly is more pleasant than jerking. And imagining the braking in 3 sections like this seems to help in gauging distances needed, and therefore helps with knowing when to start. I advise anyone new to driving to look up 3 stage breaking videos. Reglocal on KZbin does a great one.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I do - I just don't say 3 stage. Find the bite of the brake, modulate it and reduce at the end. You need to modulate to prevent stopping too early or late.

BIG thanks to you Richard! I've been taking lessons for some time now and thanks to you it's been a rehearsal process as opposed to studying from 0, was already prepared by the time I took my first lesson, me and my buddy as well. Have sent your videos across the entire university. Love your ease with explanation and overall energy, cheers mate from Georgia! P.S. I dicovered something whilst helping my groupmates with dancing classes and maybe it could help your teaching as well: In dancing when there are complicated moves that can feel overwhelming it is best to help the students aknoweldge a certain move or a position not as a collective movement of separate organs (legs, arms, waist etc) but rather percieve their body as a single organ_ a single unit just like their certain single organ. For example when you so a thumbs up you're not thinking thinking of what to do with each finger and wrist separately _ it's a single unit , a single motion, same with the whole body during dancing or driving especially a manual transmission, instead of thinking of what to do with the feet and the hands individually it is best to vizualise and feel all of it (changing gear, moving the pedals, steering) as a single thing to do rather than 4 different things to do, hope it helps.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. With practise people start to do what you said. A gear change for me is a single movement. But you can't start off that way, you have to learn everything separately, the more I can separate things at the start the more success I get.

I absolutely love the idea to start learning from sitting on the passenger seat and getting know how the brakes work! On my first lesson I've been told to drive down the hill and I was soooo afraid I won't be able to stop the car and keep a good control over steering in the same time... we survived lol but very long after that my braking wasn't smooth as subconsciously I've got a feeling that to stop the car you just need to push the brakes as hard as you can 🙈 I believe many beginners have the same or similar issues so giving them a chance to concentrate on one thing at the time is great 👏👏👏

I wish I had an instructor like you when I was 17. The fella that showed up to teach me looked and sounded like he’d done a lot of acid in the past. He tried to swindle me by taking a ridiculous route to the industrial estate where the lesson was to be held and he could barely put a sentence together. He assumed I already knew everything and basically just insulted me for 20 minutes and then charged me £22. I’m 32 now and still can’t drive. Congratulations! I may be doing some more videos on car ownership in the future. Like what to look for when buying a used car so it may be worth sticking around.

Thank you for this I currently break like the first example too late and no time to change gears. Even though I’m really good at changing gears when going up gears I struggle when it’s going down gears when the car needs to be moving slower and usually stop at any gear that I’m in even in the 3rd to 4th gear then when I’m at a comeplet stop that’s when I go to hear 1. Hopefully I can get rid of this habit when I start by intensive course

Try practising holding your right foot still as you put your left foot down quickly and raise it very slowly. Keep repeating that.

Way hay I use that technique of driving and let my pupils use the duels as well for braking if there struggling, also use it for clutch control at junctions as well if that’s a problem, massively effective way of teaching, 👍👍

Hey, just wanted to say thank you for your online lessons! I had passed my manual 20years ago and only ever driven auto since. I drove one hour with my mate, and after watching your videos I was ready for my 2000miles house and country moving trip in my new van. Thank you! You give so much value!
