I have to deal with all of these daily. The bottom of Ipswich Road though is a nightmare and collisions are plenty. I personally have been driving and delivering around Colchester for 36 years and this really worked perfectly well as it was before this. I haven't noticed an improvement on the traffic flow and it cost millions, overran and caused all who needed to get around Colchester three years of chaos! Great video by the way 🙂

Great video! I'm from Frinton but drive to Colchester once a week - sometimes I need to use St Botolph's roundabout or the roundabout at the bottom of Ipswich Road, and I have always thought going round these that something isn't going quite right! I usually put it down to a lack of experience or being a little unfamiliar (only been driving 1.5 years if that, and haven't really been far), but now I know that yourself, a professional, has highlighted their problems! I also had NO IDEA of the "secret" entrance to St Botolph's roundabout... Keep up the great videos! They've genuinely been a huge help for me :)

Hi , I live in Colchester and am aware of all the junctions you mentioned. you are ‘spot on’ . For someone visiting Colchester it must be very difficult . They have recently redesigned the Ipswich Road junction and made it worse . The old design worked well.and we now have queues where there were none. I was told the road designer has no license and does not drive. !!!! Simon

Surprised not to see any mention of the magic roundabout on here. Cant say i ever had trouble with boltophs back when i was learning but i got rear ended on the magic in my instructors car. Also baffled by that change to layer road. The turning box was perfectly fine as it was without a bike lane. Didnt even realise they had done it. Honestly for other spots i would point out. Further up london road at the turn to stright road. The way traffic has to form to the right and people try to form two queues way further back than the lights, i should imagine catches a lot of non locals out. The split junction at the bus station where the busses go left to go forward and right to go left is bizzare. And the absolute state that is having to get in the right lane at the round about before the train bridge in order to cross 3 traffic lights that bisect two roundabouts as you head to asda. Absolute Mare if you dont know what you are approaching.

I live about half a mile from the last roundabout at the bottom of Ipswich rd.I agree entirely with your thoughts. Also everyone we know rounds here hates it.Before the change we had two mini roundabouts which worked quite well. The new big one is a disaster, and it took over 3 years to build causing endless chaos and at huge expense. Allegedly the change was needed to allow for two filter lanes to go left of the main road towards the town centre and a local supermarket access. The whole thing could have been done by not touching the mini roundabouts at all as there was plenty of room .Ironically the worst filter lane was coming from the east which you showed last , but couldn't be made better as there was no room!! So that stays as it was!! Well done highway authority!!

Great video. I moved from Colchester a few years ago, but feel I always have to be extra vigilant when I go back to visit. Another problem with the Lexden junction I find is its easily blocked, so traffic trying to turn right down Cymbeline Way off Lexden road cant. Traffic then soon backs up down Lexden road. A box style junction on the Lexden exit could solve that.

As a fellow Colchester resident that uses most of these roads on a weekly basis the Ipswich Road roundabout is a crime against humanity. They had plans to improve it from 2016 and spent what like 4 years building it from 2018 and it's atrocious. There The St botolphs circus one isn't so bad cause the traffic lights sort most of the issues. But never seen so much crap on that Ipswich Road one.

Absolutely agree with you! I’m also an instructor in Colchester and St Botolph’s drives me crazy. What’s also annoying is when one set of lights from Mersea Rd direction go green the lights nearest the station turn red and with the box junction you’re lucky if you get 2 cars through on a green light.

We used to have reverse priority on all roundabouts, because of the rule that says that on roads where nobody has priority you have to give way to your right, and it applied to roundabouts. Thankfully, in 2017 they changed it, and now we have "normal" roundabouts. I think it reduced collisions by like 20%. Can you imagine driving a lorry or a van and not seeing the road you're giving way to, because you have a blindspot on your inside?

I was always amazed that despite how busy that roundabout is at St Botolphs, the hatched markings on the road at 3:06 always have loads of people just walking straight over them towards the Mersea Road direction every 15 mins when people come out of the train station next to it. It is very interesting how fundamentally different roundabouts are used in the UK compared to Germany. In Germany they seem much more simple when it comes to rules and usage, but they seem also very limited. I rarely ever see multi-line roundabouts here. It seems here they are used for less frequently used roads. And we have many, quite complex, traffic light crossings, which is also confusing sometimes as well as time consuming.

There is a roundabout near Brigg entering the A15 that caught me off one time. No markings or signs, so i used the left lane to go straight and a car next to me started to almost edge me left and down the slip road of a motorway towards Grimsby. I've been that way a few times and each time i say to myself "Is it left for straight here or do i have to use the right lane?" The space in the middle is big enough for two lanes even though there are no markings on the floor. So i just use that as an opportunity, although i don't think drivers around me know and you get vehicles in the right lane veering to the left once entered.

Have to agree, that St Botolph's can be like whacky races! Could you do one of these for the A134/Colne Bank Avenue roundabout heading from town to North Station, where the users of the middle lane never spiral into the correct left hand lane on the round about. Much of the conjestion here is caused by drivers using too few lanes on the roundabout.

Have you ever been to the Netherlands? I wonder what you think of Dutch roads (and road signs) as a driving instructor. If not, you should probably pay it a visit sometime soon, driving is much less stressful when the roads are of good quality and most signs etc are easy to understand. I already got my licence years ago, so I just watch your videos as entertainment (often times I do learn something new), but the one thing that always spooks me is seeing English roundabouts and junctions. The ones in this video are obviously out of the ordinary, but even other roads seem less organised compared to the Dutch ones.

For number 4 - there is a similar set up in yeovil, a town I delivered in for a while. Spot on, Richard, particularly with regard to St Botolph's Circus (so-called because it was obviously designed by clowns!), where newcomers (and some residents) believe they are going to the A134 and suddenly find themselves in the Mersea lane! There have been many accidents involving vehicles exiting Colchester Town Station onto the roundabout, and much controversy over the hugely over-budget and very delayed Ipswich Road roundabout. It's bad enough for those of us who've been here 25 years, but God knows what it must do to visitors! As for the "Magic Roundabout" at Greenstead..........................!!!

I pity anyone driving here for the first time and always give way to confused drivers trying to change lanes on the north station conglomeration of roads/roundabouts. It's so frustrating when people can't see you thanks to the hill, and then meeting them right between two rows of parked cars. Not even anywhere to pull in! @@TheRip72 I didn't say Bourne Road is near the A12, I meant that it's used to *get to it.* For traffic coming from the south (Monkwick, Mersea, Old Heath etc.), Bourne Road is often used to bypass the town. Especially St Boltophs roundabout. It's only really used by people using the A12 to head north. I had a line of cars ahead and behind me that went up that way. Some of course turned off and went other places, but most of them followed us from there onto the A12. It shouldn't be a common route as it's inadequate, but.. it is.

Have you done a video on the bus lane traps? People aren't given any info on when a new bus lane is going in and sometimes if you go to an area where you haven't been for years, you suddenly find yourself on a bus lane that wasn't there before, by the time you realise what you are on, it's too late, you've got a fine. I think they do it on purpose due it to bringing in more revenue.

Although I don't live in Colchester I do live nearby and it's a horrible place to drive (the centre anyway) by the looks of things, though I am yet to drive in Colchester as I'm still learning.

I think it's that Ipswich roundabout where coming up the hill from the south to join it has terrible visibility to the right and you are having to do a hill start as you pull out so it's easy to be going a lot slower than something coming from the right not seeing you... Could you please do a video about that approach? There are a couple of roundabouts along that stretch of road... Not totally sure which one I may mean. Thanks for clarifying why I find those roundabouts so frustrating! I thought it was my fault!

The trouble with approaching that roundabout up hill is the road on the right is busy and very close. You don't get many opportunities to go and the opportunties are small. The ability to accelerate quickly is essential.

There's roads around southend too which appear to be designed by a newbie Uni student that probably doesnt even drive.

All of colchesters roundabouts have far too many entrances and exits , they could do with selectively culling a few to improve flow.

I think a secondary problem with the last roundabout is that if you signal, it might make other drivers think you're switching lanes. What a poorly designed roundabout

What I've learnt from this video is that roundabouts in Colchester are evil. I wish road markings were universally standardised! Richard be bossing those roundabouts though, probably E-Drifts around them off camera ;)

UK cycling infrastructure is really badly designed, and the first example is a prime example of that.

Hey - have you ever had your AndroidAuto disconnect from your Seat randomly? It happens to me maybe 2-3 times a month and it won't reconnect - pretty annoying 😅Might try a different cable.

It's very sensitive to cables, try to avoid braided cables, they seem to fail on me a lot.

The current estimated cost of HS2 is between £72bn and £98bn (at 2019 prices), compared with an original budget of £55.7bn in 2015 (at 2015 prices). Scrap HS2 and spend the eye watering sums re-designing, paving and improving the horribly dilappidated British road system. In 2023, 60% of all cars sold in the UK were automatic, American sized SUV's and the UK roads are quite simply not capable of handing this type of vehicle. An expansion program that includes updating and improvement of all A and B roads, and bypasses would allow road users to drive quicker and free up space on congested town roads. Flying cars are already designed and ready to take over. One day you will be able to look up and see streams of flying cars headed to destinations all around Britain being powered by Google auto-pilot that the driver can set, sit back and enjoy the ride in the sky. Trains are on the way out and headed for the scrap heap of history.

All Colchester has done is change the infrastructure, it has made no difference to the traffic movements whatsoever, I have lived in The town/city all my life and seen many configuration of North station, Ipswich road, Harwich road Greenstead roundabouts. All a waste of public money. Traffic was queuing from Mile End church to north station in the 70s.
