The biggest challenge will be in deciding what to do with your scraps.
I make Charity quilts and I only use Cotton fabric so anything that is a polyester or blends gets cut up for pet beds and donated to my local animal shelter.
Remember, this is how I do it because this makes sense to me. In your sewing room, you are the ruler and you can make your rules accordingly.
I only cut 1.5 in, 2.0 in and 2.5 in strips from my scraps, I tend to put aside the long narrow scrapes for cutting these strips. I would also look for fabrics that I can cut into 2.o x 3.5 inch rectangles for Potatoe chip blocks.
If the scrap is a smaller rectangle or squarish, I add these to my crumbs bins and those are sorted by color as well for project like EPP and Kawandi quilts.
The only scrap fabrics that I put into my strap boxes is items too large for a crumb but too small for a fat quarter. That way, I don't overwhelm my scrap fabric storage.
If the piece is bigger than a fat quarter, I put that piece in with my yardage by color. My yardage bins are sorted by color into Fat quarters and larger yardage.
If the piece is less than a 1.5 inch width, I put these fabric scraps, in my string bin.
If the piece is less than 3/4 inch wide, I add this to the pet bed bag as it is too small to work with.
Please remember that quilting and piecing is about having fun not feeling pressured! If you need scrap fabrics to make a quilt, you can ask other quilters or quilt guild members and I'm sure they would gladly share some of theirs with you.
I hope this helps you conquer your Mount Scrapmore!

“Just make a decision and move on” is my biggest stumbling block to conquering my scraps. I absolutely love your cutting up the polyester to ensure you aren’t tempted to use it 😂

Hello Stephanie! I'm glad you liked this video. I have talked to my local quilt guilds for donations and other quilting friends. Also scrapes can sometimes be purchased from your Local Quilt Store for a modest price and the scraps are even sometimes color coordinated. I like to think of those donations as a blessing and I use those scrap fabrics first. We will be doing a free sew along in the fall for this Nosegay quilt (or Brides Bouquet) on this channel. Thank you for your video! Two more things if anyone is interested. 1) I was making some half square triangles (HST) - 160 of them! 2-1/2 squares; when I finished them, before I cut the excess off, I put a 1/2 seam away from the original seam and then cut it. I will use these 'crumbs' for one of my crumb quilts. 2) For the excess that I have no use for, I put them in a bag and use these 'unusable' scraps into stuffing for animal pillows; SPCA, Humane Society, animal shelters, etc. Keeps the fabric out of the landfills! Happy Sewing!

I forgot to mention this in my last comment that I did one charity lap quilt using scraps: it was 36" x 36". Using earth toned colors from what Nana gave me I did one solid log cabin block and had a raffle. We were able to raise 100.00 for a local women's shelter, and what was really neat was that a man was the winner!

Thank you so much for sharing all your tips on scrap quilting…it always helps me because I do scrap quilting for all my charity quilts…I love to sew and sometimes it's fun to mindless sew and be able to donate beautiful quilts to less fortunate people…I am so grateful for you sharing your tutorials and especially the potato chip blocks as I have been able to make twice as many quilts for donation and they look terrific! Your channel is so inspiring and refreshing as you share your talents with such grace and dignity…I appreciate you and your husband and especially your tutorials…. Keep going as I am sure you have lots more scrap quilts to share with us!!! God Bless you for all you do for Charity….we need more people like you🥰

I have bins and bins of scraps, too. I am working on them a little at a time. I have tried several different methods, but I sort by color and size. I cut into precut sizes, 2 1/2 inch, 5 inch, and 10 inch. I had tried other sizes, too, but decided it was too many and too hard to keep sorted, so 3 precut sizes and colors are my plan. (Let's see if my plan changes. It has in the past.)

Thanks for sharing, I love the quilt behind you, using different sizes, and shapes of triangles and making them fit together. Even the added tiny squares look like triangles, love all the crazy colors. I have so many scrapes to cut, iron, and sort just to get started. If you do the quilt behind you, I vote for "large" on the size. My fingers like to work on larger items.

I put the 'scraps' in a fabric bag that then becomes a cage bed for shelter cat/dog, when they are adopted the bed goes with them. Sizes depend on the bigger pieces in Mount Scrapmore or ones I piece. Cotact local shelter fo size they need or make your pets a bed.

I love playing with/sorting fabric scraps (yes, I am a bit OCD too) but it has taken a long time to attempt a crumb quilt. I put aside anything bright, mainly primary colours, and pieced together scraps of wadding, self binding with a piece of new fabric that I had bought in a sale years ago. I love the end product. Having watched your video, I am now keen to try my first Kawandi quilt. Thanks for sharing.

All the scraps that I get I use different size square templates to trace and cut out the squares into different sizes to sew later into a baby blanket. The smallest square size is 2 inches. With my strips if it is wide enough for a 2 inch squares I make that. If not i use it for small projects. Like pot holders.

Your charity quilts must be beautiful to be made from crumbs and strings. When I make charity quilts they are coordinated 10” squares. If I sewed something with smaller pieces I would never get any done. That makes you a saint😉 keep quilting 👋🏼

I drape an old pillowcase over a small metal garbage can and fill it up with the garbage cotton bits, batting scraps, and thread. When it's 7/8 full, I sew the pillowcase shut with two rows of straight stitching and donate to pets (usually I leave them at the Feed Store with a Free Pet Bed sign.) Totally washable.

@conqueringmountscrapmorewi2509

Hello Elaina! I'm glad that you like this video. For me, a string is long and narrower than 2.25 inch wide and no shorter than the length of my thumb and not necessarily straight. For me, a crumb is a hand sized piece of fabric down to a 1.5 inch square and mostly a rectangle or squarish shape. The Facebook group is using the room feature in the group for impromptu sew dates. The next virtual sew date is the first Saturday of the month and starts at 9:00am to 5:00pm MST. If you are interested, please come. I hope you have a fun and creative week ahead. Can you more further delve into how you define crumbs and strings? A few of your "crumbs" were too big for my definition (mine varies, but generally smaller than 2.5 inches) and I throw the sewn cut offs (the pieced triangles) into my crumbs. My strings are generally just long and skinny - the bits that you will turn into cut strips I toss into my strings. So I'd like to hear more on your process/definitions.

I’d be making lavender bags , pin cushions or similar little items from poly scraps of a decent size .. it hurts my heart to chop up fabric with no faults like stains etc …..I’ve always had a small crafting budget so never waste anything I can make something from….. most of my small items I donate to school Mother’s Day stalls or fetes for other groups and small items always sell well especially with children buying with just a few dollars 🥰 Love the quilt behind you , very striking .

I’ve been thinking about trimming my scraps to straight lines, so even if I never get to using them, they would be a more appealing donation. Also like the idea of cutting up undesirable fabric as stuffing. I wonder why the odd shapes you cut off from the cottons don’t go into the stuffing pile? Thx!

I would toss the cotton scraps that you were tossing into the garbage, and put them in the dog bed bag. I get scraps at pieces from my sewing group all the time. They also send the leftovers from quilt projects along with the scraps. I use them to make community donation quilts. I think that, if I didn't accept another scrap forever, that I would have a lifetime of sewing materials. So yes, if you are looking for crumbs or scraps or strings or assistance or company, join a sewing group. A lot of them don't even charge a membership fee!!

I really enjoyed this video! Just one question, do you have a video on how to get started sorting and sizes to keep? You said at the ironing board to not think too much about it. But I am putting so much time into The thought process because I do not have everything into categories yet. So you mentioned crumbs, strings, triangles in larger pieces. When you first got started did you put them in the color, or just put them all into one small bin? I’ll keep watching your videos to find out if you have one and how to first get started. Thanks for all your help tricks and hints. I hope I explain this right. Have a wonderful day
