Conqueror's Blade - Symmachean Paladins - Upgrading The Men At Arms!

So we are back with some more Conqueror's Blade as we set about taking a look at the new Symmachean Paladins, the new upgraded version of the Men At Arms, certainly makes for quite an interesting unit, have heard some people describing them as an awful unit, certainly don't think that is the case but equally not game changingly strong either :)

Top line feels amazing to me. Its like charge once and again and bttle prayer is like order them to attack with the bonus healing. And they actually destroy most melee units so far. Didnt found any reapers so far but they do awesome against most units; even braced stalwarts gets on trouble when paladins charge against them. Azaps can keep the line for a bit but they get destroyed eventually if no one charge in to help them out.

I wonder if this is a sign that we will get more "units upgrades" in the future. The odd thing is that they picked 2 already strong and reasonably popular units and made it better so i wouldn't be surprised if the next time they will upgrade imperial spear\pike.

While there might've been a few better choices for them to revamp, SS and especially MAA were more or less never used. SS was the "I don't have imp shields, ok if I use SS" unit. MAA were overshadowed by Tseregs and Confettis. I think it was the right choice to bring them up to speed.

I expect we shall end up seeing more unit upgrades in the future. I sort of agree with azmo, spear sgts used to be very dominant but have slipped a lot in recent season with all the new units + I do think the new guys look pretty cool :-D

i think it was because the MAA were too similar to squires and the spear sergs too similar to demesne spearmen. Perhaps we'll see an upgraded halberdier sergeant since it is just an uparmoured halberdier unit.

Eh... spear sergeants were popular... man at arms players was a group of people who only used them for the diversity of cover commander, charge, block, but azaps were the better choice... Now they are on azaps level.

Because they were flat out worse than other option prior. Conderreti guardsman are still one of the best bangs for your buck with low leadsership cost and can compete with any other swordsman in the game. Spear sargents were only used if your didn’t have imp shields. The only reason you would ever pick either is A: you like knights (me) B: you like cover commander (also me) If neither of those applied to you you could get away with much better units. They were not worth the purple slot. Now I would argue stalwarts easily fit in as an aggressive alternative to imp shield and the only reliable way to break a pike wall. Paladins on the other hands are, better than MAA but mostly just in a quality of life way. They are basically just a better MAA in all regards. They get shield bash at the start and the heal ability. From the end of their veteranancy lines as MAA, they are the Tankiest sword unit aside from reapers now. However sword units still aren’t very good, and paladins still suffer from the idiots AI that MAA had. I’ve seen multiple times where they take years to go from one target to the next, and it’s almost like watching a buffering bar in their head. My only real complaint is that neither unit has cover commander anymore, which in my opinion is both what made them unique and let you work around their idiot AI for some amazing plays. Having a goon squad of SS show up and surround an enemy hero and beat his ass was hilarious and cover commander would also allow you to skip your unit past gaps in shield walls to attack the rear.

Evo, you should really look to using royalty free string, choral, or any music that better fits the setting of the beginning montage because I think the more modern sounds creates a little cognitive dissidence. However just my opinion and you do you, love the content as always.

Ok as the eternal contratian i'm obliged to say something good about the unit for once :) their charge seems great, i like that they don't run up to targets and swing their swords like so many other units do since it often allows the enemy to walk out of range of the hit. That and with the top line you can actually use it regularly enough to keep up with the moving frontline. Their V attack has them switch to their shield formation which is quite strong from the front, yeah they wander a bit and often turn around but still. It also seems to have a decently high rate of attack since i often see a lot of hits rack up quickly. One thing i do want to test/know is how the v attack fairs against pikes, their shields should protect them from the initial hit and moves them close enough to not get hit back. Another good thing is that with the paladins doctrine, a piercing damage doctrine, and breakthrough doctrine the high rate of attack almost makes them perform like mobile pikemen, again if they perform well against pikes their V attack can be used as a great filler tool to allow a push

They can be considered as a direct counter to pikes because they can block pike's range advantage while attacking and when fighting 1v1 they almost certainly win. But the loss of cover commander which has really good AI engagement abilities is quite the downgrade, they basically lost a big portion of their mobiilty.

on that map i also go to that supply everytime ;) ... after some intensive testing of my house... the heal seem for friendly units seem to work.... in less then 25% of the time (longsword glitch?) but you are right... IF they fix that .... our house siege 5 man teams will surely be rolling 1 or 2 of them (with at least 4 in every 15 man) just to give that extra heal buff in big blob crashes where it all comes down to numbers (the more units that stay alive longer to deal damage ... the more likely you outlast the enemy :) ) our house cant wait to try it (IF it is fixed) ... in a 5 v 5 full tier 5 melee vs 5 paladins (rotating healing)

I figure out that paladins are best to use in f2 formation and not much using charge, only in when I know we wining or they will push over. So best its use f2 and make from theme wall. They go like spear formation and even imp advance doing almost nothing to theme in that formation. Dont let enemy get behind and make that f2 formation non penetrable.

I know I am very Late, But I always find when I Get like a men at arms unit or Paladins charge at me in that Block, i can always use my flying reaper to just halt it. Then Use whatever unit I have to kill them with

Yep if you can use your flying reaper to interupt then it works very well and does pretty much stop their charge completely

The paladins could be very useful in tw when you're defending one if the bigger fiefs like ines with border fort beacuse the heal could keep units in the fight longer therefore you would last longer without having to suicide because all your troops are beat up. If I jeard correctly they have a 10second cool down heal which is insane. It might be only 5%, but the fact that you could heal something like shields like the stalwarts, it could heal quite a bit because the heal increases on the max hp of the healed unit. this might change a lot

If you X V these guys properly they kill units and heroes crazy fast. The heal also acts as a get up from stun locks. These are good for 100 unit kills and 3 heros kills per siege if you use them right. Charge > X V > use heal to shake off first stun lock. Rinse and repeat.

This. Between paladins/stallwarts it’s a breeze getting MVP or at absolute worse top 5. I didn’t know about the recover from stun lock, that’s huge.

Have you ever considered picking up Nodachi for your hero? You're the only KZbinr I really watch for this game and between Pole Axe, Maul, and now Glaive the Nodachi is the only other weapon I'm interested in that you haven't played lol

The part that has stopped me trying things like nodatchi is armor type, got a pretty decent set of guardsmen now and it's a painful though playing without all my leadership bonus etc and having to craft a new medium armor set. I'm sure I'll end up doing it someday just not been very good at forcing myself to start crafting XD

Thanks for the very informative video! I wonder to what extent they ARE mediocre versus just FEEL mediocre. You did get 120+ kills and lost only 1 of their units. That's pretty crazy for a melee unit. When you did start really losing them it was because you attacked a giant blob of enemies head on. Is there another unit that would have performed better in this exact scenario?

They certainly have their monents and perhaps I was a little harsh on them, I think its more the fact they don't have a super defined role like many units but youre sort of right what else would have done well in that scenario

@@EvoLozGaming I think you're right, it's hard to feel a unit is effective without defining a clear task this unit should be effective at. I suppose I'd take them if I am going for solo roaming, or fighting from supply point to supply point, much like you did. Their main competition (for me) would then be the old spear sergeants with their cover commander. In any case, thanks again for the great video. The heal not working is not a bug, it heals 5%max hp of units around it and 250 per second only for itself. That is working as how it is described

i LOVE the paladins they are so tanky, and im not really a good player and even i am finding them durable and they have a really good charge, that aswell as there V attack blocking while stabbing. they feel great to me.

Have yet to watch the entire video, but from what I gather they aren't as popular as the stalwarts which were a flat improvement over the sergeants. The question remains if there is a good reason to stick to the men at arms over the paladins

Well you presume that the stats u see modified in the unit card are really the stat the unit uses (that might be a big IF in this game :D) Theres unit dmg and piercing dmg doctrines which stack (in theory) so i dont see why paladin dmg doctrine wouldnt be intended to work with normal dmg doctrine. (Also might work better with them selling doctrines on Frontier version - or at least thats what i heard about that version)

Skill, supporting your units, outsmarting the enemy. You can also use a purple unit at the start of battle (especially on defense) and farm serfs and other crap units if you want kills badly.

haha not heard time2win before but that sounds about right, most of the stuff sold is cosmetic, everything else can be unlocked ingame by playing but there is a fiarly good grind to get to the higher tiers
