I stumbled on your video/channel when looking for ways to up my game. Historically, the term "Poleax" was used in the treatises as a catch-all for basically all of the polearms, that weren't spears, or halberd length. ("Halberd" was a similar term for long polearms that weren't Pikes.) The "Standard" was a hammer backed axe, however, the same techniques were taught for warhammers, bill hooks, bec du corbin (Crow's Beak) and those are reflected in the skill names. It didn't even require an Axe head, but the basic idea was a multi-tool. If the main head isn't exactly what you want to hit that guy with, you can flip it over, and try the other side, or thrust with the point not unlike a spear. If you have to carry 1 longarm into battle, when it's heavy, and hard to live with, it should be useful in as many fights against as many targets as possible. That's the basic doctrine, and concept of "Poleaxe" in the treatises. Quite often, they were bespoke to the man at arms, some preferred a back hook, while other preferred a hammer head, et cetera.
@Psiberzerker3 жыл бұрын
"The Poleax lacks any escape ability." However, where it really shines is in combination with Units in Formation. I see it as a sort of Support class, the reach combines well with Sword, and Shield units like Men at Arms, and Paladins especially, because they can provide some healing, which this class also lacks. There's Bandages, and Rolls, just like any class. So, I tend to step out to CC, then roll back into my ranks to Bandage. Rather than backing them up like LS&S, or leading from the front like Nodachi, you want to be in the center of the rank until the enemy Hero shows up. Quite often, they want to land a CC from Horseback, so what I do is put the unit on a Charge order. That just leaves me to Tank the Hero, and staggerlock them, because of the weakness of the moveset: All the attacks are slow, and telegraphed. So, they're going to get their hit in first, if you try to react. (The Pushback cross-check is reasonably fast, and staggers to set up for your Combo) However, it does a lot of Blunt damage, which works extremely well against heavy armor, shields, and block. So, you have to anticipate them, get in 1 good shot, and follow through with a combo which keeps them on the back foot.

Thanks for the historical background! Always nice to see more. I didn't want to get too in depth as that could be a whole different video haha.

@@Psiberzerker Absolutely! A good Poleaxe player should be sticking with their unit, as that is where most of your damage will come from. What the Poleaxe DOES have, is tons of CC to control a battle. I'm using the Pike right now for Season 8, and man I miss my Poleaxe sometimes.

Great vid, so which skills do you end up running most of the time? Personally I cant decide if bec de corbin is worth taking over another cc (gotta keep that weapon dance heal)
@IroncladLion3 жыл бұрын
A great question! My current favorite combination is Bec de Corbin on Q, Weapon Dance on E, and Push Back on R, with of course Rough Justice on T. I sometimes switch out Bec with Grim Harvest (more survivalist) or switch out weapon dance with Billhook (hero killing) if I have certain missions to do. Pretty much every ability is useful except the halberdiers thrust, that ability doesn't really do anything lol. As for WHY I keep Bec de Corbin, is for the huge damage to multiple targets, and the massive armor debuff to enemies you hit with it. So Bec for damage, Weapon dance for heal and enemy debuff, and Push back for CC AND recovery (Push back is essential). With ultimates, honestly both are very good, either one is a solid choice.

Hmmm... Chose poleaxe cause i love halberds and all similar polearms, checked the video to see if there was something i missed, but this is pretty much the build i thought for myself, although matchmaking is killing me, rendering my poleaxe character unable to damage and unable to survive, 4-5 hits from a glaive user and I'm down, while i land at least 20 and they still stand. Starting out this game is hard, ngl.

this is a great guide but im a little confused about something. i have only watched one other poleaxe build and they have said the complete opposite of something you have said in this guide. you are saying to focus on strength over agility while this other person recommends agility over strength, mainly for the slash penetration, as the abilities they were using was scaled off that. is this purely personal preference between you two or is the definitely a scaled difference between strength and agility with the poleaxe

I feel like parts of this guide is a bit outdated now, it seems putting attributes into toughness (health) is the way to go since the rune system has changed. Idk.
@IroncladLion3 жыл бұрын
The rune system is constantly changing, so keeping the guide up to date with the runes would be very difficult. Keep the Poleaxe tanky, that should never change haha.
@IntiArtDesigns3 жыл бұрын
@@IroncladLion True, but tanky by armor or tanky by health (toughness) seems to be a subject of debate. I guess it depends on the situation and the season.

Just wondering but does this still apply to the current meta? And wich units work Well with poleaxe?
@IroncladLion2 жыл бұрын
I'm unfamiliar with the current meta, but the base idea from this guide still stands. Poleaxe is a frontline, tanky, control specialist class. A wide variety of units can be used, but I recommend units with high damage potential, as the Poleaxe can lockdown enemy heros while your unit does the real damage.
@skunkforce07763 жыл бұрын
Hi thx for that guide its very well done, and undersandable. Just one question isn't it better to get some points for toughness (because ur rune counts in percent), 10% of more health is even more heal? Im just started the game so perhaps i don't see everything.

You can build a PoleAxe multiple ways, but one thing for sure is that you don't build a pole axe for fighting units. You build a PoleAxe for enemy heroes and build your units for the enemy units. A Defensive PoleAxe is a waste of skills cause they will still get killed, so you aim for damage dealing PoleAxe instead. Am not going to give my build, but facing me means ur hero will die for sure, or make sure you run away.
