Well lovely people - this brings the fourth crusade to a close! Please Share on social media and leave me some comments. I'll create from compilation videos for April of the Fourth Crusade and of Parts 6 -13. The big question going forward - Reconquista or Constantinople? I'll post a poll in just a bit. In the mean time enjoy!!

The Fourth Crusade needs to be a TV series: no heroes, only interesting villains, lots of intrigue, sex, wine and greedy soldiers in high masts. It's sort of 'Troy' meets Game of Thrones (only first 4 seasons!) - the internet demands it.

La Serenissima has always been my favorite medieval maritime republic and overall favorite medieval Italian city. This is definitely one of the darkest and most disgraceful episodes in Venetian history. And for Byzantium, this was in my opinion more of an undignified blow than the fall of the empire and the death/disappearance of Constantine XI. Once again, I must say your videos exceeds all expectations. Superb work.

There is some irony in the Venetian treachery. In the short term, Venice profited greatly from the sack of Constantinople. In the longer term, the deterioration of Byzantium's position in the East probably accelerated the Age of Discovery and certainly resulted in no less than 10 future wars between Venice and the Turks (almost all of them lost by Venice, at increasing cost) as they took Byzantium's place as the prime target for Islamic expansion.

Napoleon stole the horses and had them placed on top of the arc of triumph near the Louvre in Paris. They were returned to Venice after 1815. If it is true that they date back to IV century BC or even earlier, imagine how many things they could tell if they talked.

@Dani Al It was not Roman only in name as it was the legitimate legal and political continuation of the ancient Roman empire. "Real romans from the time of the republic would be offended" also for the Rome of the imperial period of let's say Trajan, as it evolved to something very different in comparison to the republican times. This is not a valid argument as everything evolves and doesn't stay the exact same forever. if you brought a Briton of the Victorian age (just 150 years back) in modern UK he most probably "would be offended" if you told him that's the same state he used to live in... But, as it usually happens it's not simply black and white. I do agree that the eastern Roman empire was much more Greek than Roman especially when it comes to culture, ethnicity and language. Until the 7th century AD (the end of late antiquity and beginning of the middle Byzantine period) one could say it was more Roman than Greek. But from then on it's much more Greek than Roman in most aspects. The "Byzantines" generally considered themselves as inheritors of both the ancient Greek and ancient Roman traditions and as the descendants of both. "In his »Comparison of the Old and the New Rome«, addressed to emperor Manuel II Palaiologos (1391-1425), Manuel Chrysoloras presented Rome as the mother and Constantinople as the daughter which was founded by the two most powerful and wise peoples of the world, the Romans and the Hellenes, who had come together there in order to create a city that would be able to rule over the whole world. In a sermon to the same emperor, he stated that the Rhomaioi were the offspring of the Romans and the Hellenes, thus being ENTITLED TO USE BOTH NAMES". When I started to fluently speak English and be able to learn about history from English books, I had no idea that some crusades were fought against Christians, No less against Rome (we call Constantinople, Rome). Great job with the video. The 4th Crusade was a real tragedy, the sacking of Constantinople by the Venetians and Crusaders was horrible. But all of the intrigue, corruption, and nepotism in the Eastern Roman Court did not help things. This is why the Shogun kept the families of the Daimyo as hostages and the French court was always at Versailles with the King of France.

@yuribrito1504
@yuribrito1504 2 жыл бұрын
Great Video! The 4th Crusade was one of the most tragic events in human history! In my historical analysis, Europe and the West lost the most in 1204. Constantinople was the largest city on earth! It was not for nothing that Constantinople was called the "city of cities" ("Η πόλη των πόλεων"). Constantinople was like a "shield" (Ασπίδα) against the Muslim invasion of Europe via Anatolia. However, after the 4th Crusade, that "shield" was simply broken. Constantinople, in my own words, was the "shield of the west" ("Η ασπίδα/προστασία της φύσης"). By weakening Constantinople, the 4th Crusade contributed to the future expansion of the Ottoman Empire itself! Had it not been for the 4th Crusade, Constantinople would probably not fall in 1453. Ironically, the 4th Crusade contributed to the expansion of Islam. Doge Enrico Dandolo's Venice, on the other hand, was the greatest beneficiary of the 4th Crusade. In 1453, Mehmed II simply conquered a city already weakened by several invasions, wars and looting. Nevertheless, it is CRUCIAL to highlight that Pope Innocent III, the Pope who called for the 4th Crusade, had NOTHING to do with the sack of Constantinople. In fact, Innocent simply excommunicated all the soldiers and knights who took part of the sack. After all, the primary objective of the 4th Crusade was Egypt and Jerusalem, NOT Constantinople. Rome, therefore, had nothing to do with it. The 4th Crusade simply wiped out all the efforts made during the so-called Komnenian Restoration (1081-1180), which was carried out by the emperors Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118), John II Komnenos (1118-1143) and Manuel I Komnenos (1143-1180). The Komnenian Restoration was a real economic relief for the Byzantine Empire. The reigns of Alexios I Komnenos (Αλέξιος Κομνηνός), John II Komnenos (Ιωάννης Κομνηνός) and Manuel I Komnenos (Μανουήλ Κομνηνός), in my historical analysis, marked a true Byzantine "Renaissance" (especially from an economic perspective). However, the 4th Crusade simply ANNIHILATED all the economic and military prosperity of the Komnenian Restoration. In fact, ALL the emperors of the Palaiologos Dynasty, which was the last Byzantine dynasty (1261-1453), reigned and ruled over a completely bankrupt Constantinople; including, for example, Michael VIII Palaiologos (who recaptured Constantinople in 1261), Andronikos II Palaiologos, Andronikos III Palaiologos, Manuel II Palaiologos, John VIII Palaiologos (who tried to reconcile with Rome), and, of course, Constantine XI Palaiologos himself (who received the final blow). ALL the emperors of the Palaiologos Dynasty, therefore, faced serious economic and/or military problems because of the 4th Crusade. The destruction of the Byzantine Empire (Βασιλεία των Ρωμαίων), in my historical analysis, was completely decreed in 1204, not in 1453. The greatest beneficiary of the 4th Crusade, on the other hand, was obviously Venice (Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia); the "queen of the Adriatic" ("La Regina dell'Adriatico"), as I like to call it. Doge Enrico Dandolo was undoubtedly the greatest beneficiary of the partition of the Byzantine Empire (Partitio Terrarum Imperii Romaniae/Partitio regni Graeci). Furthermore, Enrico Dandolo even received the title of "lord of three-eighths of the Roman Empire" ("Dominus quartae partis et dimidiae totius Imperii Romaniae"). Moreover, Venice also seized Crete and the island of Euboea (Negroponte). The 4th Crusade, in my historical analysis, led to the apogee of Venice's economic and military glory throughout the 15th and 16th centuries, more precisely during the dogeships of Francesco Foscari (1423-1457), Pasquale Malipiero (1457-1462), Cristoforo Moro (1462-1471), Nicolò Tron (1471-1473), Nicolò Marcello (1473-1474), Pietro Mocenigo (1474-1478), Giovanni Mocenigo (1478-1485), Marco Barbarigo (1485-1486), Agostino Barbarigo (1486-1501) and Leonardo Loredan (1501-1521). The 4th Crusade, therefore, was a crucial watershed not only in Byzantine history, but it was also a watershed in Venetian history.

I loved the interrogation mark at the end, because a lot of historians consider this point as the end of the byzantine empire. The palaeologos reign could be considered a successor state but not a restauration of the former empire, mainly because the ruling class is back to being orthodox. Great video as always. I'd like to think that after the 1204 sacking, Bulgaria became the third Rome, having been on the ascent at that time. Kievan Rus was long dead and the Russian principalities fell victim to the Mongols less than 20 years after Constantinople. Bulgaria's capital fell in 1393 ( the country itself 1396 ot 1422, Vidim kingdom, Dobruja despotate) while in 1389 the first ever Russian Grand Duke was elected without Mongol approval, following Dmitry Donskoy and Moscow's rise, thus making Moscow the 4th Rome. Some consider it the current Rome, though if we want to get technical, it was sacked in 1571 by the Crimean tatars and Ottomans, captured in 1611 by the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth and afterwards in 1812 by Napoleon, though ultimately Russia beat all those enemies to the ground, so who knows. History is fun and your channel is awesome dude. You are an inspiration :)

@@FlashPointHx Just another fun thing to mention while on the topic : The first ever Tsar in history was Simeon the First (the Great) and he styled himself as a Tsar of Bulgarian and Romans. Then fast forward 1000 years and the last person in the world to ever hold the title is Simeon the 2nd, named after Simeon the First. Guy is still alive, even became a prime minister of Bulgaria in the early 2000s. Also, Boris the First, was the first unifier of Bulgaria introducing Christianity (855) and the Cyrillic alphabet (866) to Bulgaria. The last unifier in Bulgarian history was Boris the Third, who in the Second World war unified the country with the claimed lands in Vardar Macedonia, White-sea Greece and Dobruja. And get this, both Borises were the fathers of both Simeons. :)

@@FlashPointHx Unfortunately, no, and the reason being the same. Great effort is put into creating the image of decadent and incompetent Romaioi/Byzantines, with Angeloi emperors dangerously simplified, as an excuse for this calamity, when the evildoers are obvious. Constantinople still had symbolic power. By taking the city, the Ottomans controlled access from the Mediterranean to the Black sea. Mehmet II was a young sultan, wanting to prove himself, and what better way than to take the city that was the legacy of Greece and Rome? He may have not found an abundance of gold, but slaves and other spoils of war was significant. There was a cultural Renaissance during the last period, between 1261 when the Romans retook the city, and 1453 when it fell to the Ottomans. Despite the fact the "empire" was bankrupt and had enemies closing in. The Deeis mosaic in the Hagia Sophia is thought by most scholars to have been created after the Michael VIII took back the city from the Latins. Although some think it was created during the reign of Manuel Komnenos, a few decades prior to the fourth Crusade. The Chora Church has the most beautiful mosaics and frescoes remaining in the city (in my opinion), created during this time (around 1350.) This was under the patronage of Theodore Metochites, the mega doux (prime minister). Mystras in southern Greece is a Byzantine city from this time; the last emperor, Constantine XI, was crowned in Mystras. The church and porphyry disc where he stood can be seen. I learned this in John Romer's four part documentary "Byzantium: the Lost Empire". I am visiting these places in a few weeks, it will be an emotional experience to finally see them in person.
