There are loads of centers faster, more intimidating with more flash,. But because of Smith insane understanding of space he is hands down the BEST 13 of the pro era. Was more a playmaker in the wider channells than a strike runner. He made everyone around him look better. Loved watching him play, hated it when it was against the boks....Just to good , never made any mistakes whilst still being creative. He'll be one of the first names I put down in my alltime 15

Summed it up perfectly.. a thinking man's rugby player but wasn't afraid to get into the rough stuff either. As regards him the best 13 of the pro era... he's my personal choice too but I don't mind the people who say O'driscoll was the best

I feel like on paper he shouldn't have even been a starting super rugby centre let alone the 94 All Blacks caps Had pace but wasn't fast, solid tackler wasn't feared, could run a decent line but wasn't breaking open games Was definitely the glue to the All Blacks backline for years, played over 300 professional games and you'd struggle to make a 10 minute highlights video on him but he'd be one of the first players picked

Always hitting the ball at pace...and gave the ball to his outside back early...he wasn't the fastest but always in the right place at the right time good player

Obviously from the highlights it shows he was more of a facilitator than a dynamic fast centre. Didn’t have the explosive power of Gerber or Umaga, didn’t have the speed and guile of a Sella, Guscott or Odriscoll, didn’t have the big tackle of Frank Bunce or Joe Stanley but he was probably the most intelligent of them all.
