In my lifetime, can remember seeing, amongst others, Gerald Davies, JJ Williams, Ieuan Evans, Shane Williams, George North and, just recently, Louis Rees-Zammit, spanning both the Five and Six Nations' eras. Much has changed in the professional game, epitomised by George North, with the size of a lock forward and the speed of a sprinter. Speed is essential and few have come close in world rugby to showing similar ability and speed to that of little Shane. (A professional backline including Shane and Rees-Zammit would be something to behold. They both have that special factor that creates excitement before they have even received the ball, even though they are not contemporaries and one is only at the start of his career). Shane Williams is by far the best Welsh winger in the professional era, with no disrespect to George North, who usually flattens his tacklers these days rather than running round them, or Ieuan Evans. If Shane got the ball, anything seemed possible and only Gerald and JJ are comparable.
