Great video! Continuous welded rail means no clickety-clack and these trains sail down the tracks like they're riding a ribbon. Looks like lots of SD60 hood units.

One possibility why Conrail didn't keep the Erie Lackawanna was because of online shippers and population centers. The former NYC was in places where it was densely populated whereas the EL didn't have many population centers at all.
@b3j83 жыл бұрын
Sadly true. The Erie built west late in the game forcing it to bypass most large cities that were already served by other railroads. OTOH had the line somehow survived, it would be a natural today for Intermodal.

What was the reason for Conrail demise I thought at the time they were bigger then CSX and NS.
@TheEndPermian4 жыл бұрын
It was to reduce competition, CSX and NS bought out Conrail together, splitting the company 48%-52% respectively. Conrail itself still exists as a paper corporation

It's a pity why Conrail didn't keep the Erie Lackawanna for its hot Chicago-New York intermodal TV trains and the rest for regular freights and Amtrak on the ex New York Central.
@dknowles603 жыл бұрын
did not need it . El had a lot more grades was longer route a lot slower. full discloser i a Erie Lackawanna rail fan. saw a el train in 1974 in markle in been to Marion ohio walk the el east of youngstown Oh have drove along side the El on I86 and ny 17 but the NYC water level route was so much better
@EricPowell_Indy3 жыл бұрын
@@dknowles60 Exactly. The EL’s west end (Marion or Mansfield to Chicago) would’ve been a fast IM route - but so would the PRR and the NYC is now. NS and CSX today both move IM and carload/bulk fairly well across northern OH/IN as it is without using the ex-PRR very much, and CSX is using only about half of the B&O’s capacity at present. The EL was a great railroad but not worth the upkeep, sadly. I really miss Conrail - they ran 70 trains or so daily west of Elkhart yet never had the level of congestion NS faces, even with “Precision” Scheduled Railroading. They knew what they were doing.
@dknowles603 жыл бұрын
@@EricPowell_Indy that is for sure did a lot of train watching on Toledo west. Pace many trains on us 6 a lot move at over 70 mph . In a 12 hour time Con rail moved 50 trains. It's sad to see how sorry ns has become. I think it is the x N&w people have taken over.

@RailroadMediaArchive6 жыл бұрын
This was shot on DVCPRO. The SDI output on the DVCPRO deck goes to a Blackmagic Design DeckLink Mini Recorder, then 480i to 720p conversion is done with Avisynth. Footage is edited with Premiere and encoded to H.264 for KZbin there. For analog footage from VHS or Hi8 I instead use an ATI TV Wonder 600 USB to capture.
@1990sRailfan6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the info and replying. I've spent the last few months trying to find a way to get the best quality out of my analog HI8 tapes. I use Premier Pro for editing and de interlacing but I think I'm still losing one of the fields, I'll try Avisynth and Handbrake. Thanks again.
@RailroadMediaArchive6 жыл бұрын
1990s Railfan Premiere's deinterlacing isn't very good. Handbrake is pretty good, on par with VirtualDub since they both use the Yadif method. Avisynth (specifically, the QTGMC plugin) is as good as it gets with software. Avisynth is overwhelming at first since it is script-based, but once you get the hang of it it's very powerful. I use it for cropping, deintetlacing and upsizing.
@1990sRailfan6 жыл бұрын
I rely on a couple of outside companies for the initial analog to digital conversion, and I wonder if I'm losing some quality there with the lack of control of the conversion settings. I'll look into ATI TV Wonder 600 USB and then tinker with Avisynth to see if my results improve. Thanks.
@RailroadMediaArchive6 жыл бұрын
1990s Railfan an outside company should be using broadcast quality hardware that would do better than any software. I took a look at your videos and the quality seems decent.
