As an IT expert for years and in recent years specializing in networks and network security, I can say that it is really exciting to work as a network engineer and contributes a lot to the design of IT infrastructure and security. Specialization in certain market-leading manufacturers is necessary but that applies generally in IT. The same goes for responsibility and, if necessary, availability. My colleagues as software developers generally have more stress and less variety, not to mention the creative opportunities.

Yeah, being a network engineer is not a 9-5 job however, my job gives me a lot of days off. If you enjoy what you're doing, its not all that bad.

I can take your reasons not to become a Network Engineer and flip it. #1 reason to become one is job security. You just have to take measured steps, continue learning and make sure you don't burn yourself out.

How you can gain without any pain? How one can stop of burning out? If you put yourself for challenges you can never ever step ahead. Period! These challenges really tests your skills and strengths and take you at next level. These challenges are only altitudes that tests your attitudes. Most of people use one lunatic, idiotic and baseless term i.e. Smart work. Its really bullshit term or word, ever heard on this planet. How one can be simple without going into details? Same applies here, how one can reach to the next level without being skilled or capable of that level? I have seen many mother fucker managers who always wants to sit in their offices and just segregating or making some idiotic and nonsensical analysis on Excel sheets. They even don't know what's mean by the word " Manager ". They don't know how to manage scope, schedule, cost, quality, communication, procurement, nothing all of it. Everybody wants to be fucker Manager, no one wants to be SME [Subject Matters Expert]. This is one of the main reason, people don't want to work but to reach at top. And then, they got inspiration or motivation from Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Zuckerberg, John Koum, Jack Ma and many other but they don't want to know or discuss how hard it was for them to reach at that level. How much did they work hard with consistency. They worked to their "Butts off". Its the only way of Glory and Heights. Period!

The video maker is just trying to pull the ladder up behind him. Nothing more. Network engineer is not nearly as suffocating as he makes it out to be. You see these kinds of videos all over where people try to dissuade others from entering their territory and cutting down competition.

Who never wanted to work hard and hide behind office politics, leg pulling, groupism, badmouthing, backbiting, blaming, complaining of others and they call it so called -------- "Smart work" and they don't the mean and definitions of the word "Smart Work." They don't know, no one can be Wise or Intelligent without going to hardships, phases of life. The phases that really crush and burn out humans with lot of pains. And such stooges, craps, crooks and criminals don't want to work hard rather always by pass or find short cut of it. That's all there's to it with this stooges

What are your thoughts on Cloud and networks being shifted out? I see a lot of network engineers shifting to cloud.

Hi, I think cloud networking is a completely separate domain especially with so many cloud service providers and platforms. Also, with any new field there is always demand before it reaches a saturation point, I personally havent ventured in that direction but would be keen on exploring more

I'm a Network/Software Engineer by profession. The thing I hate about Network Engineering is having to travel to different locations and sites every freaking day, which is not what I want or like! I'll rather get back into doing Software Engineering! Yes, you need to do a bunch of certifications and licenses, which really sucks! You have like a dozen vendors you need to certify on, which is annoying! Network Engineering has pros and cons!

Nice to see another perspective. In terms of ai, do you the network engineer role is quite future proof compared to other it roles. The physical aspect of cabling seems future proof but do you think the computer work can be done by ai?

Thats a great question. AI is already integrated in networking however I strongly believe it will only make our jobs easier as you do need human intervention. You can check my video that I made on this very topic on the channel.

25 years in the field and I can attest that I never expect to go out Friday nights. Expect some changes to last well past midnight. If you can, start your changes Saturday mornings. Do not do two changes at once or timed too closely to each other (also limit the # of changes for the weekend). Make sure your testers and/or other change implementers are lined up accordingly and have their cell# just in case. Expect to lead and own each and every project even if your part is inconsequential. If you don't have control, no one does. Try to move up the ladder to stop doing changes, but still expect some calls from Jr.'s on the weekends. I can go on, but I'm getting stressed just thinking about it. Save your money, invest wisely and retire early as you will hate this !Sht sooner or later.

thank you for this informed video. Feeling kind of hestating right now, my networking diploma program starts this september. There are some points in your video are exactly what I hate, like working in weekend and receive the anger form customer as a support. And I watched some other vlogs about a day of networking engineer, they have to do wire stuffs. OMG they are all big no to me. But it's kind of late for me to change the program, is there any direction that you think would be just like software devp, as working in office, tackling problems just with computer???? Maybe cloud, nor automation? Or security??? really hope that you could shine some lights on this!!!

Hi mate. You dont need to be intimated by this video. Yes network engineers do have to perform such tasks such as connecting cables and manually handling devices however these days we have "zero touch provisioning" where you can deploy networking solutions only from your computer. Think about why you decided to go with networking, if its just pure fear, dont worry things will get better once you start :) hope this helps

As a network engineer there's no 9-5 job. Its a 24/7 standby for any emergency, Example i got calls and remote session most of the midnight timing which is irritating and tired.

💯 agreed...for engineer from fresher till 20 years..As a software developer developing networking devices and software he needs to understand only c or Java and algorithms. But as Network engineer working a configuration technician he has to keep doing certification from fresher till 20 years he is forced to do 5/10 certification and that too at low salary than core software networking developers.

Thanks for your comment mate but where I will disagree is that as network engineers you are also forced to climb the ladder and slowly but steadily transition into more senior and manager centric roles where the need for constant "technical" certifications may cease. Its a good topic that leads to great discussion!

Hi mate, AS-BUILTS. These are documents that are made once a networking project is complete which includes all technical details/plans and any critical information that is needed to be included as part of the project documentation.

Hi, I would strongly recommend to get some work experience first before going for the CCIE. Try looking for helpdesk roles as well and you can then branch out into Network engineering. Hope this helps.

Honestly I would not be a network engineer if the profession is like you described here. Network engineer is not expected to work all the time after hours or during weekends, network engineer is not accountable to problems that are not related to networks, and network engineer is not help desk support, especially first level. If you found yourself to be in a situation where you have to fix everything that is not even in your domain, if you are expected to work 12-14 hours per day and during weekends, please leave the job, you are being taken advantage of. . While SE folks earn twice as much money while putting quarter of effort.

You can work remotely too, but in some roles network engineers are needed onsite too to physically configure devices or manage them, depends on the role but can be 100% remote too.

You set up the physical gear and check to make sure everything runs smoothly. I swear people make this job way harder than it actually is. The technology doesn't update literally every week. Pick a vendor or two to specialize in and just keep up with their advancements. Chances are that "big change" Cisco made is barely noticeable to the end user.

We have our infrastructure that's already setup however every month or two months we have changes/advancements to our infrastructure with ongoing deployments + projects. But hey, we can agree to disagree ;)

constant upskiling counts to alot of jobs / careers but the upskilling will be contributed with higher salary as well so its one side an advantage but on other side an disadvantage low skill or jobs without any knowledge requirement will be paid very low and u need to be lucky to find any job opportunity. with the fast and constant learning as network engineer u open ur own company and offer IT services on a low level to other small businesses or u can just search for relevant network engineering jobs vacancies and u will find plenty of them
