In today's on-location video, I take to the mountains of the Lake District national park to shoot some landscape photography and chat about things to consider before buying a new camera. Today's landscape photography vlog comes from lake Buttermere which is situated right in the heart of the Lake District.

Agree about gear update obsession. I have never spent more than £199 on a camera body (used). I have also printed to A3 from an at least 10 year old 5MP bridge camera. It is what the photo is ‘about’ (story), not how sharp it is, or how many MPs the file is. Photography is something to be enjoyed, not something to break the bank! 😫

Hi Ian regarding losing kit weight I've just bought the Fuji 70-300mm lens as it offers a great focal length especially when paired with the 1.4x. It's half the weight of the 50-140mm and I'm looking to also get the 16-80mm (again lighter than the 16-55mm) as I reckon they're the perfect lenses when out hiking in the fells or wild camping. when f2.8 is not required. I'm really impressed with the images from the 70-300mm. I love the last 2 images. Stunning reflections. I've never had conditions like that at that location, it just means I'll have to keep returning 😉

Used gear is my secret. Nikon D810, Sony A7rii. Both under $1500, high res and a huge lens selection. I built my 42mp system with 6 lenses for less than the price of a Canon R6 body or any of the over 30mp new bodies.

It’s funny how people tend to go for bigger cameras and more megapixels for large prints. But the larger the print the less PPI you need. Also a good point on how galleries were 10 years ago. Better invest in better glass and experiences. Great video 👍

Great video Ian, I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and I’m fed up of KZbin recommending gear related videos. As humans we’ve evolved to be dissatisfied with what we currently have and desire something better, only for the cycle to start again once we have it. We have this anxiety that one day in the distant future this amazing opportunity will occur where we get the chance to produce massive prints and that we’ll reget not buying that 100mp camera... 😱 I’ve really been making the effort to be grateful for the camera gear I have and the ability to get out and take photos, I genuinely feel the most at ease in my photography than ever. I’ve actively been trying to avoid channels who play the gear card to get view although I can understand it’s tempting to boost viewing numbers. One particular channel springs to mind with a move to GFX. I can only imagine the thousands of subscribers now thinking their Fuji X is now substandard and must be upgraded. All the best and keep up the videos, enjoy your content and mentality.

Fantastic video and gorgeous shots. If I want a new lens now I must sell one I already have slows me down and it focuses me on asking what is important in my photography now. Try to keep to about 3, wide, mid prime and Tele. Borrowing a photo book from library helps as well unlike you tube they rarely talk gear.

Thank you for your concise and informative video. Your thoughts on “new camera” equipment is to the point and extremely sensible. I just came across tour channel today and have subscribed. I love landscape photography and shoot with either my XT3 or OMD Em1 miii having gone mirrorless two years ago. I recently purchased a Fringer EF-FX PRO II Fuji Auto Focus Mount Adapter on sale , which enabled me to make good use of some of my Canon Lenses that have been sitting idle since my switch to mirrorless. It pairs perfectly with the XT3 and I am thrilled at the results that it allows me to achieve. Wishing you the very best. Mike

I agree with everything you said when considering new gear and the reasons why most of us do not need to fall for the MP Race as I call it. The last nine years of my life long photography endeavors I have been shooting Fujifilm crop sensors. Love them btw, however the last year had me looking into Nikon again but this time mirrorless. Why? because I have many Nikkor glass from the Ai-S versions to the AF-S G series that are not being used as they were intended and I wanted a FF Nikon to take full advantage of the image circle of these lenses rather than crop variations adapted to my Fuji or DX Nikon DSLRs. I was romanced by the 45mp Z7 but also felt the 24mp Z5 was more practical, then in comes the current sale of the Z5, so I jumped on it. Now I have two different 24mp systems and I honestly don't yet feel the need to go any higher, for now, that there should cover anything I want to shoot. I have been known to panorama stitch my landscapes on occasion so that takes care of high MP resolution needs in a pinch if I need.

You could look at the Gitzo Traveler, it was the best compromise when I was looking. I shaved about 1kg changing my tripod and head. I also mounted a small QR plate (with the help of a grinder) to the 100-400 which saves weight/space over the usual options and is more stable, the leg mount has a bit of give. Quite rewarding to lighten your bag.

Great video! I just made some 12x18 prints from my "ancient" 24mp Fujifilm XT2 and I've got no complaints about the sharpness. I could probably go even larger with a bit of extra sharpening. I feel that I've absolutely no reason to upgrade my camera, and I'd sooner spend some $$ on another lens, a trip, or maybe a photography workshop.

I've got a 4' x 3' print on my wall made with my X-T3. It's more than detailed enough. I've got a GFX100S on order to replace my 50R but I'm going to cancel it. I realised I would be buying the camera just for the sheer sake of it with no sound business or artistic reasoning. I guess I am of the opposite nature. If a video title seems to be related to a new camera or lens, I specially don't watch that one. I get enough ads in the content I do want to watch without having to watch a video that is in itself an ad.This especially true with donated or loaned cameras. It is extremely unusual to see a real critical review of donated gear or loaned gear so I just skip them and watch something different.

Better gear does not equal better photographer 99.9% of the time. Once the photos are edited I bet the vast majority can’t tell the difference between a GFX photo and X series photo unless they’re cropped in over 200% pixel peeping side by side. Plus the size of the lenses and 100mp files are really going prevent you from shooting as often and improving.
