My son has a learning disability and has been really beaten down over the years by his teachers and peers. He failed his first semester of this school year. However, I've personally watched him complete a game called Portal which really requires extremely complex problem solving skills. He also regularly recalls/recites lines from movies that he hasn't watched in years!

Wow! This is an ideal worth working towards. One structure that has been put into place is coursework for selected subjects. The coursework allows students to choose the goals to work on. Teachers follow a rubric to guide and gauge learners. By default, students already 'pass' the subject by choosing suitable goals based on the criteria spelled out for the subject. And awarding of marks is according to efforts put in, besides showing initiatives. Currently, many public schools are attempting to move students towards self-regulated study somewhat like the acronym 'A.I.D.A' used in effective advertising. A for attention is getting students by allowing subjects as electives. I for interest is attained by showing the links to jobs of working adults. D for desire gets pragmatic parents and bored students on board. A for action gets learners to dig resources out of their own initiative. The smartest parents tell their teenage children, 'You choose it so make the best out of it.' And then provide support to see self-learners evolve out of their otherwise constrained kids.
