I'm encouraged that he thinks the pressure from situated learning models "will bring about real change" for our tradition-bound, test-crazy education system.

I'm a Civilization addict, and a fan of Jim Gee's. I'm thrilled to see the two of them come together. And Gee's right on, no doubt. I believe he's got a good grasp on the past, and a good vision of the future.

I think it's amazing that James Gee here brings an intellectual discussion to an area often bastardised as "brainless". Learning is learning no matter in which field. Video games are a valid form of literacy in my opinion. Those who condemn them based on a lack of understanding of it as a literacy are essentially doing the same thing as condemning and entire race of people just because they don't speak the language. Consider me a follower.

Wow, I'm blown away with the eloquence and simply logic of the argument. I think I need to do some more research ;)

Wonderful video showing the power of games and how they may change education. I have an MA in Applied Linguistics, so particularly enjoyed the insights by a scholar in this field.

All I can say: Thank you. These videos (along side with Coursera's Videogames and learning -course) is really showing that THIS IS THE THING I want to do. I'm a special education teacher, and I really want to dive deeper on this way of learning, as traditional ways of learning won't work for the youngsters I'm teaching!

If you get the chance, check out his books. So far, I am halfway through reading "What Videogames have to teach us about learning and literacy" and it has changed the way I look at games. It also has some interesting theories on identity in games and analysis of the nature of learning in games that is implicit.

I am son of redAlert, Civilization, Captalism, Age of empires, age of mythology, diablo, SImCity, etc, etc. I think educational paradigm became prehistoric, compared with games.
