Everything he did in this video is easy to replicate using any digital camera that has manual settings. Any DSLR can easily duplicate Mark's results as long as you understand how exposure works and how ISO, aperture, and shutter speed affect it. The only area one may have trouble with is remote flash triggering but even then there are low cost radio triggers such as Yongnuo RF 603's or similar.

Thank you for this, Mark ... coming from a video background, and just getting heavily into photography, I never understood what photogs meant by (and how) freezing motion with the same shutter speed. Now I do! One question though ... with strobes, don't they make strobes that have a light that is also always on so you are not working in the dark? Seems like it would help with setting up bounces, and such as well, no?

As the LED technology has developed enough I've completely switched to continuous light for subject photography and even some portrait works. When shooting a huge amount of subject's like for an online shop, even energy saving bulbs make cense instead of killing speed-lights' resource.

Great video Mark. Couple of questions regarding the demo Quantum flash demo in the video: 1) Using a D90 body and 35mm DX lens, I tried recreating your demo with similar metering settings. However, I was unable to focus on my subject in the relative darkness; how did you achieve low-light focus at the settings specified? 2) If I understand correctly, you don't need to worry about synch speed because of the fact that the only light is from the flash, and it has fast falloff, yes?

I agree with some of the information in this video. Yes, strobes have significant advantages to constant lighting in fast action photography. Strobes can freeze photos. However stating cold lights are expensive is plan wrong, as is stating most hot/cold lights come in 3200K. If using CFL, you can get a range of colors. Great information for newbs, but it seems like you are trying to slight constant lighting.

A beginners camera works the same way as Marks camera. Its the concept you need to learn, not the camera you need to get. A 60D Nikon or a T2i Canon can take "not necesarily, but closely" the same pictures Mark and as much more Expensive cameras do. And this is considering both Nikon and Canon camera models I mentioned are for beginners. So learn the concept, get the lights, and start shooting.

Watch other episodes and you will see that Mark uses all types of cameras, from beginners DSLR to the pros... For this episode the camera makes no difference since it is all about the lighting. When the camera is on spot Mark usually uses more than one camera and talks about differences between models and brands.

I had always wondered what the difference is between constant light and strobe. Now I know why and I would like to thank you so much for the information. I was wondering though can you show me how to use my strobe/umbrella outside and get great pictures. I have one 580 Canon speedlight, one umbrella stand with umbrella adapter, one silver umbrella (non - shoot through); radio transceiver and receiver. Thank you

yes indeed, my point was that sharpness or softness or motion bring a different feel to the photo. Constant light will bring some characteristics first and strob some others. it's does not means that one is better than the other. saying that one or the other is the good way will only mislead the potential photographer willing to do more than the standard picture.

I have a continuous light setup with 2x45W fluorescent bulbs equivalent to more than 400W equivalent. Would this be similar to a 400Ws strobe?
@briliankamil4594
@briliankamil4594 6 жыл бұрын
ws is rather confusing, its the total energy can be discharged by the flash, but the flash use them all in one shot. in reverse cfl light shot 50 times in one second and all of them combined to those wattage. So a 400 ws flash, is a 20.000w 50hz fluorescent. and 400w 50hz fluorescent is 8ws flash

Excellent. May I ask two questions? 1. Is constant light normally more yellow than flash light? The reason why I ask this is I want to take product photos but I am afraid of yellowish constant light. 2. Is LED constant light on par with traditional constant light? LED is less hot so I am tempted. Many thanks.
@weirdweaver149
@weirdweaver149 8 жыл бұрын
Depending on the bulb your using, yes. However, you can set a custom white balance that will help counter that "yellow light" effect. Depending on your camera this should be fairly easy to do. Search for "Custom White Balance _________" (fill in blank with your camera model) for more info on this. Also, if you shoot RAW instead of jpeg you may be able to fine tune the white balance in post to correct any discoloration.

I like strobes, but have run into the problem of action happening while the strobe is recharging. Looks, smiles and goofy stuff that are there and then gone in the 2-3 seconds when the flash is recharging. I have been thinking of constant lighting because of this. Can you blend constant and strobe?

Yes, since then I have acquired a Godox rechargeable battery pack for each strobe. They make the cycle time virtually instantaneous. Good stuff!

Good explanation but outdated. Now, 3 years later continuous lighting has become much better and is available with the same modifiers (softboxes, umbrellas, etc.) as for strobes. Also the power consumption with the new energy saving fluorescent bulbs and LED's (5000-5500 Kelvin btw.) is now less that those of a strobe, which solves the heat problem at the same time. IMO it's an excellent alternative for strobes in case of portrait and still photography. 3 Units will get the job done.

haha you are comparing a 200lb+ light with some thing that weight 200 times less, and it cost 22000USD, which a profoto B1 cost only a tenth of that. I am sure I will not need 10 B1 to be brighter than the 18Kw Arri

The issue though is even with better LEDs that render good color you have someone standing in bright light and their eyes get red.
@sgxnexgq

well, informative however the the reasons to choose between constant light and strobe are a bit odd. The reasoning that strobes are better because it can freeze the movement seems wrong to me. I would prefer something more neutral which says that if you want to freeze movement then strobe is required. As the purpose is to teach, instead of pointing that one is better than the other, which is only relative to what the photographer would like to achieve, why not highlight their different outcome?

seems not a huge issue with lenses with lower f stops though to just use a always on light. easier to set up and you can preview what it will look like tthrough the camera. when your taking pictures of people just standing/sitting in a studio i dont really think you need to worry about freezing motion that much unless some kid that moves around a lot or a baby even so higher end cameras and such can handle that.

as he explained, the model could walk a bit back and forth, or shoulder movements, turn around and you might lose the focus due to the shallow DOF. So you might want sometimes a smaller aperture to have more focus

With strobes (unless you get the more expensives strobes) you will have longer recycle time. Esp. when shooting kids it is nice to be able machine gun it. Continious light is much better in this case. We never use a strobe for full power when shooting baby en kids, looking to add soft continious light instead of strobes. There is no such thing as the one is better than the other. It depends and where and how you use it.

Np, haha. It deosnt mix becase Black is not a color, Black is "no Light" só It doesnt blend with the flash, the only result you get is tje moment you got Light and that was the flash a super rapid moment that as no time to get any blur, if you still dont understand send me a private msg :) have a great Day :)
