Nice video, but I think you've missed a very important thing about Flash & Exposure compensation on Nikon. Yes, exposure compensation affects both ambient and flash exposure (it affects the whole exposure), but you completely missed the flash compensation button on the camera. Just press that button and set the flash compensation and you don't need to go into manual mode! That's a very important thing that you missed completely, which makes Nikons solution look like crap (which it isn't).

@vestrelado Yes, it's a consumer camera. It's a classification given by Canon. If you go to the Canon website you'll find the 7D under the "Consumer & Home Office" lineup. All brands have the consumer class and many of the cameras are over $3,000. Price is not the determining factor. :)

For some Canon camera like 5D markII, you also can control high speed sync from either camera or from the flash itself. There are three option, 1st curtain, 2nd curtain and hi-speed.

If I buy a 3rd party flash (Nissin or Metz) for my 60D, will the Exposure compensation still control the ambient light only, or does that feature only work in conjunction with the Canon Speedlites? Great videos, been a real help.

hi, nice tutorial, I'm very new to photography, I'm using Canon 760d/T6s I'm in between to buy a flashgun from Canon and Yongnuo, obviously Canon flashguns are very expensive. 1.can I use yongnuo flash and trigger it wirelessly without the optical sensor of the flash? 2.which yongnuo flash model is compatible for off camera flash without needing a transmitter and receiver?

Very nice tutorial. I have a question though. Is there any way to get a catch light in the subject's eye, when bouncing the flash from a sidewall or from a reflector behind the camera?
@lslx71208 жыл бұрын
yeap..but ud have to put ur reflector sort of close to ur subjects or models. If ur taking the shot u might show in ur subjects' eyes.

As many others said, this video is good, but is very Canon biased, as it missed a very basic and important feature of Nikon cameras. You don't have to go into Manual mode. With Nikon, if you decrease the exposure comp for the ambient light by -1, you can increase the flash compensation by the same amount (+1 in this example) to keep your subject at the original exposure. It is very easy and allows great separate control of ambient and flash.

@stevepa9998 жыл бұрын
I do not know if this will work with Nikon, but with Canon, when using a bounce flash, put it on manual mode. Enter the settings that you think with give you the best picture, and do not worry about proper exposure. If your speedlite is on ETTL mode, it will compensate to give you proper exposure. If you are not happy with the exposure just compensate the ETTL exposure plus or minus.

On a Canon camera you can also set flash exposure compensation, which on the less expensive models requires you use the 'set' menu navigation. In all manual/priority modes, there's a block at the right side of an EOS500/550/600D's menu that is empty if your flash compensation is set to 0. If you adjust it,t he opposite of exposure compensation is true; flash duration will increase/decrease while exposure time will remain the same, wheras exposure comp. makes your exposure/quicker slower.

@vestrelado Don't get hung up on the semantics. The NY Times recently had photos from an iPhone on the front page. An iPhone isn't a pro camera but it was used by a professional. It's not the tools that are most important, but how we use them.

I don't quite get why the flash isn't affected by the exposure compensation (i.e. shutter speed). As the flash is in FP sync mode, the duration of the burst last an entire exposure (i.e. until the rear curtain has come up)? So shortening the exposure time would not only dim the background but also make the flash exposed subject apear less bright? So for a consistent brightness of the subject, the power of the flash should be increased accordingly? Does the TTL system do this for you?

umm So I have Nikon D3200 and doesn't seem to have a way to allow me to go past 1/200 shutterspeed, any help? the only way is to upgrade? :/
@rayonline7810 жыл бұрын
the cheaper cameras doesn't have FP sync. what you can do is put in a ND filter on the lens and it drops scene's brightness down so you can use 1/200 speed. also use the lowest ISO. but the thing with a ND filter is that it is quick thick and dark so autofocus can be affected. best is to upgrade to a higher model used or new.

I wonder what happens if you put a yongnuo yn565EX on top of your D3200. Since it's a Canon flash, the camera won't recognise it and you can use any speed you like. This works with my Yn560 however! The yn560 does not have hss support so I get Black bars. But if the flash supports hss what then?
@TheoLubbe13 жыл бұрын
@acuna13 When shooting indoors with Tv mode, exposure compensation adjusts the aperture (how large the diameter of the light hitting the sensor, and subsequently the amount of light) instead of shutter speed instead of the opposite in Av mode. As you may know, a smaller aperture number = more light but also = narrower depth of field. Using a flash you can use a larger aperture number = less light (flash compensates for this) = wider DoF.
@Fotographic7111 жыл бұрын
You don't have to shoot in manual mode to get the same effect as with the Canon when balancing lash and ambient outdoors. You can easily shoot in aperture priority with the Nikon and still darken the background while keeping the flash exposure the same. Take a photo, then lower the exposure compensation to darken the background. Since this is a global adjustment, you may have to increase the flash compensation. Do this each time you adjust exposure compensation.

14:58 you made a mistake there...you said, you'd put the camera in Aperture priority and 1/60 second...but you can't set the shutter speed in that mode
@TheoLubbe13 жыл бұрын
You should have a read through your camera's manual and try out its examples pertaining to using Av and Tv mode, then consider how flash and exposure compensation and their respective changes in either mode would affect your scene. Flash compensation makes things lit by the flash brighter/darker, exposure compensation makes things not lit by the flash brighter/darker. Tv mode's compensations change Aperture (DoF) while Av mode's compensations change shutter speed or flash duration.

The 7D is a Semi pro, not a consumer.
@TheoLubbe13 жыл бұрын
@snapfactory Imagine how annoying it would be for those looking for a product if cameras obtainable by the general public that are used primarily by professionals had to be thrown onto their own site or page. The 7D is not targeted at your average consumer; your average consumer cares only about 'consuming' or 'using' a product, which is what most consumers will do with a camera (never take it off full auto). 'Professional' targeted cameras have functions most consumers will never use properly.
