I didn't know the comic Constantine. Therefore I was actually pretty impressed by this film. The thought that Lucifer, the Devil, coming around during the film's climax to assist in saving the day, and watching the Angel Gabriel taking on a path synonymous to that of what Lucifer once did, just felt really fresh as a movie concept.

He did not save the day , he wanted Constantine to go to hell but when he saw that heaven accepted John he literally ripped the cancer out of John. In doing so he made sure that if he can't have John thn God won't get him either.

Hey I wrote this thing! I love how they explore a film and never mention the writing. So I guess I'll tell the story because it's got some interesting twists and turns. Maybe the fans will like hearing how it came about. I got the assignment to rewrite a Constantine script that Warner Brothers had spent two plus years developing. The original writer Brodbin pulled his script from two of the Hellblazer comics, Original Sins and Dangerous Habits. By the time I came on in 2000 the script was several drafts and two writers past Brodbin. It was a cut and paste mess, the tone was something like Indiana Jones in Chinatown, full of Swartzenegger one liners and lots of gun play. Even though it would be my first studio writing gig, I thought it was trash - didn't really want to do it - until they sent me some of the graphic novels including the two Brodbin had pulled from. I was blown away. This character was a writer's dream - a crass selfish bastard. But I was really a nobody that happened to have written a script that was a favorite around the industry. So it would be a long shot for me to get the job. I had to do something bold. So I sat down and wrote what I thought would be a worthy opening. That was 9 pages that included finding the Spear (in a completely different way then the film) and the Exorcist scene using the mirror to suck out the demon from the child. That got me the job. My marching orders were to do a polish, make their cut and paste smooth and maybe rework the ending. I wanted to do good since this was my studio virgin assignment but I just couldn't wrap my head around what they wanted to keep. To be blunt - it was shit. So I did what a writer is never supposed to do - I went rouge. I threw out probably over a million dollars worth of scripts and started over. I didn't tell anyone, even my agent. I made a whole new story - invented the twin sister subplot - threw away the standard pentagram and candles and replaced them with a cat and a bucket of water. I spent two months getting my vastly different version together and then turned it in - thinking "they're gonna love this!" And the execs hated it. How could I have the audacity to throw out 3 writers work without asking?? I was out. The career was over before it began. I thought I might not even get paid my balance. Then something happened that only happens to starlets in Hollywood cafes: Two months after turning it in, the president of Warners, Lorenzo Bonaventura, happened to pick up my script and read it that weekend. On Monday he came in and he told the execs that had stopped talking to me - "Now THIS is a movie." I would go on to write almost 50 drafts over 4 years (on and off work) for three different directors and two different stars. I wrote so many drafts I started calling it Constantpain. Some of my drafts were labeled by the TIME - not the date. One of the last scenes I wrote, again telling no one - was nixed by one the major producers because he said it was too late to add a new idea. "But it makes the film better!" No. So... I went over his head and slipped it to one the execs who loved it and it got into the film. Yeah I got some dagger eyes a few weeks after that. The idea had to do with how John got his ability. It's not in the comics and I know the fans hated it back then - but I still believed it would solve a plot hole for movie audiences and the idea came straight out of a personal experience. People often ask writers how they come up with ideas. Well here goes -- My Dad was building a house and passed out. They discovered he had blockages in five major arteries so they got him into the hospital and did heart bypass surgery. My sister and my Mom sat in the waiting room and the Doctor came out to tell us that when they were finished they couldn't restart his heart. They scrambled with the heart pump to get it restarted and finally did. But for 4 minutes my father was clinically dead. Now my dad was a strong man, joined the army when he was 17 and fought in the Korean War - but he never told us what he did in the trenches. I believe because he may have taken a few lives and since he was raised Catholic he was afraid of dying because he knew exactly where he was going. (Sound familiar?) Before the surgery he was a very outgoing man, high in spirits - a prankster at heart. After the surgery he changed. He was quiet - introspective. Brooding. After a year of this I finally confronted him - "You've changed - what happened?" It took him a while to get it out but he said since the surgery he was having the most disgusting, horrific nightmares. He couldn't even describe what he saw. It was effecting his sleep. I tried to get him to see a psychiatrist but he was "old school" and thought they were all quacks. This is what I put into Constantine - his origin. That he had tried to commit suicide and because it was a mortal sin, went to hell- but then they revived him - he was never the same. He could see the demons right here and also knew exactly where he was going when he died. The film was released and wasn't the success Warners wanted, so the first sequel I was writing in 2005 never got greenlit. Over the years the film has gathered more fans and many have told me it's one of their favorites. I'm also surprised that women usually like the film more than men. I think it has to do with the "balance" between Heaven and Hell right here on Earth. I got another chance to write a sequel in 2010 when I woke from a dream and quickly wrote 9 pages of what my agent thought would be a great sequel opening. it got the attention of the producers and the director and when asked - so what's rest of the story? "We went to hell in the first - we're going to Heaven in this one." "Why" To burn it down.

I truly hope they leave it alone. All the sequel movies made about stand alone films suck. If they make a movie with the plan to split it into 3+ movies, they need to have that established BEFORE making the first movie, otherwise its just a desperate grab for money....Please tell me you are not part of the "Shut up and take my money generation", those people will throw money at literally anything, even if its bad.

I don’t hate the movie, I just want to point that out. But it’s extremely unfaithful to the comics, like very unfaithful. Constantine’s English for one’s dn blond, so the actual character himself is nothing like what he’s supposed to be apart from smoking. There’s also a lot of other stuff but because it’s not as well known as Spider-Man a lot of people don’t know it’s a comic book but the ones who are fans are usually the people who dislike the movie. Because a lot of people actually really loved the TV series for example because that was fairly faithful.

M Express you have to understand I didn’t make this movie nor the comic, I’m merely saying why a lot of people didn’t like it. Although I very much disagree with what you just said. Look at how many people were annoyed about The Witcher or Harry Potter and now James Bond. People have a right to dislike something if they’re a fan of the original source material. Why? You might say and that’s a fair question but the answer is that if they’re not going to be even remotely loyal to the original source material then what is the point? Why not make something new? Btw it doesn’t bother me because I don’t read the comics but I’m arguing their point of view. But if you’re a fan of the comics then chances are you paid money because you assumed it would be like that, you had an expectation based on the title of the film. It’s all sunshine and rainbows if you just thought “oh, that seems like a good movie” but if you’re already a fan then you’ going to feel someone robbed. There’s no reason in my mind to just not make something else. For example I wouldn’t make Lord of Rings or Harry Potter and start messing with stuff, I’d just make my own fantasy film.

Me I can understand that. I never read the Constantine comics and really didn’t even know it was a comic until I saw the movie, since it came out back before the days of widespread internet usage. So I got to appreciate it for what it was alone and not by comparison to source material. However, I can see how it would be frustrating to someone who had read and enjoyed the source material as I feel dismayed at how the x men comics were tarnished by the movies especially the Phoenix saga. But surely we can all agree Keanu’s awesome 😎

@@benbauer1257 The Vertigo imprint was created by DC for more adult themed content (this is in the video). Great stuff there. Vertigo has since been shutdown and all of the IP is being folded into the DC-Adult line of books (forget the name). Also, Constantine moved over to DC proper in 2013. Haven't read any of it so I can't say how it compares to the Hellblazer series (which I"ve almost completed).

if you'd like to watch some animated movies with the comic version of Constantine, i'd highly recommend the movies Justice League Dark (2017) and Batman: Hush (2019), they're both set in the same "DC Animated Movie Universe" and the movies that have been made for it are all pretty neat!

This is one of my favorite movies ever. I've never read the comics, so I was able to watch it with a fresh outlook. And... I think you are missing the point. By the end of the movie, Constantine has save Isabel and her sister, stopped the Antichrist, exposed a traitor angel, and... tricked the Devil into curing his cancer. All of these are actually selfish acts on Constantine's part. He didn't do them to be a hero, he did them because he could. It's narcissistic at best. Also, afterward, Constantine hasn't really changed. He hasn't transformed into a new heroic person, this is simply the new year's resolution effect. Believe me, it's only temporary. Just like humans when they try to quit smoking or lose weight or hit the gym more, we all make a good start and look great doing it for a few days, but ultimately we fall right back into old habits. And here in lies the true intelligence of the Devil. He knows John's new lease on life won't last, he knows that down the road John will fall right back into his old ways. So clearly the character hasn't changed, what we see by the end of the movie is only temporary. Oh, and you forgot to mention the end credit scene showing Chaz as an angel. This scene is more important than you could imagine. It quite literally says that Chaz was an angel THE WHOLE TIME. According to the Bible humans can go to heaven but they can't become angels. So, Chaz being an angel at the end means he was one the whole time, and Constantine knew it. This is why Constantine treated him poorly. He knew God sent Chaz to watch him, protect him, or to spy perhaps. There are clues throughout the movie hinting about Chaz's true nature. Chaz serves Constantine selflessly without thanks. The mirror with the demon falls on Chaz, he not only can see it, but it doesn't effect him unlike that other man whom it aged instantly. Chaz can't enter Papa Midnight's club, because the club is exclusively for haflbreeds and the neutral, Chaz is a full angel and therefore not neutral. When Chaz was making the bullets, he started to reveal a ton of knowledge and understanding that impressed Papa Midnight.

Baltazar was a full demon and could enter Midnite club. So, him not entering had nothing to do with his potential angelic condition. The knowledge he had was probably obtained by reading Constantine's books. Don't know whether he was an angel all along, but those last facts were wrong the first and dubious the second

It is still one of my favorite occult type movies. Never would have heard of Constantine otherwise due to how obscure the comic actually is. While I do agree that compared to the source material, Keanu is a massive re imagination of Constantine, I still prefer him and the movie over the series started up on netflix a couple of years ago. Hellboy was much the same for me ; prior to Del Toro's films, I hadn't heard of it- then I watched his movies and looked for the comic books only to be sorely disappointed by the source materials.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I actually had no idea it was a comic so I really enjoyed learning more about the character Constantine. Now I need to rewatch the movie with this info in mind. Thx for doing this video!!

Until I watched this I didn't know that it was based on a comic (RIP Vertigo). I always saw Constantine's heel-face turn towards the movie as him taking advantage of the circumstances to get what he ultimately wanted -a ticket out of hell. Then giving up smoking because he knew it was killing him the first time around and he'd be able to seriously piss off Lucifer at the same time -double win. Doing the right things for his health only because it serves a purpose for him personally and not because of any reall change of heart. I'm going to go find and read the comics now and put the movie in the mental basket of 'Americanised live-action fanfilm'

Disagree that Cage would have been bad as Constantine. He would have been different, yes. But both of these guys are pros, and if del Toro were in the mix, no telling what the cake would taste like. But it would be nice to see it back in London. I wonder how Reeves would sound in Cockney. And using Cockney slang? Maybe they could give the audience a brief phrase dictionary.

I'd been a huge Hellblazer fan when I heard about this. I'm Irish so I knew him as a Scouse necromancer lol. I have to be honest when I heard about the changes I was a bit worried. I think Keanu's great but he wasn't Constantine. But I have to admit I thought it was brilliant! Ok it wasn't Hellblazer but it was a decent stab at a difficult character. Keanu was great but to the Devil the spoils - totally agree. Best screen Satan ever 😃

I like this movie a lot. It's actually one of my favourite super hero/cape flicks. It ticks a lot of boxes for me that make a movie stand out above others: subtle world building that is decidedly not in your face at all, that doesn't hold your hand to explain what is going on which makes being a fan of the source material hellblazer, that more rewarding! I would go so far as to say this movie is actually one of, if not the best super hero movies, or at least, it's the closest thing Hollywood has done to capturing the soul and essence of the source material on screen. Say what you will about the changes they made to John Constantine (he's British in the comics) but I think it was for the better.

It's a great film overall with many many good actors in there. In my personal opinion, the way I see the ending was.. It didn't change him really.. I can still see him carrying on being a prick to people lol. My take is that He knew the Devil wouldn't just let him go to Heaven and would do what is needed to keep him a live abit longer. So he saved a soul.. while ridding himself of lung cancer/the tar. win win in his books..

Yeah, I agree. In the end he saw he would lose and manipulated the odds. He knew the devil would come and stop the plot and knew if he ask for something truly selfless that God would like that and he'd get access to heaven finally. His manipulations and gamble got him the result he wanted

This is one of my favorite movies from when I was younger, it gave me bad dreams but I still watched it every time it was on! I still think you should go over the Metro game series. There are many monsters and a bunch of supernatural creatures I think you would love! Great video!
