When this first came out I watched it with my oldest son who was 14 at the time. He still says that the way they depict Lucifer is one of the scariest things he’s seen in a movie because they make him look like the grandpa that lives next door instead of some terrible demonic creature.

@@VladislavBabbitt Why would you not need one? The character is a long running DC comics character, and there are plenty of stories they can tell. Plus this movie has become quite the cult classic in it's own right, and Keanu Reeves loves this role and movie and has wanted to make a sequel for years now. I can understand hesitation with "legacy" sequels and all that, but if in the right hands it could be something special (and this movies director wants to supposedly return and the writer (or one of the writers) is on board already).

Yes, that's what I love too. It's the little details like in his apartment you see dozens and dozens of full water cooler bottles lined up along the walls just under the windows. None of the characters ever explain or even mention them but you assume they're some sort of make shift holy water barrier to keep demons from crashing in.

Its a show don't tell, there is a bit of exposure but really a minimal amount to not have the audience lost completly. And for the rest, its a bit a mixed bag of everything that people knows about folklore and supernatural through stories. We know for a while now that in ancient times Cats where regarded as the Guardians of the underworld by Egyptians and other cultures, so the scene with teh cat doesn't need much for some with more thna 5 braincells to go "Oh yeah right make sens" In the end its quite smart, cause the Cosmology of the movie is as much "cannon" as it can be AND Headcannon, with each putting its own layer above it cause of what we know about the occult.

Best I can find is that writers say it's in development. It's been put up on IMDB but that wouldn't be the first time a fake film or sequel was put on there just to never be made. Before Keanu Reeves was John Wick kicking ass in a suit, he was Constantine, kicking (demon's) ass in a suit. Also, Peter Stormare gives one of the best performances of his life as lucifer here, which he's only in the movie for like 5 minutes and Tilda Swinton as a genderless angel is just so perfect as well! Nevertheless, this is such a ridiculously underrated movie. I had no exposure to the character prior to the movie, so I absolutely LOVED it and this movie really doesn't get enough love, in my opinion.

The interesting thing is that the original depiction of Hell in this movie was that it was supposed to be completely pitch black and half submerged in tar. When Constantine cuts his wrists to summon Lucifer, he cut through tendons which is why he was unable to manipulate his lighter to light his cigarette. "Constantine" is a reference to Constantine I (Flavius Valerius Constantinus), also known as Constantine the Great, the Roman emperor who converted to Christianity and converted the Roman Empire into a Christian nation, laying the foundation for both the Catholic Church in Rome and the Orthodox Church in the former Greek city of Byzantium, later called Constantinople, today known as the Turkish city of Istanbul. Fun fact: Constantine's appearance was based on English musician Sting, the frontman for The Police. Alan Moore, along with artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben, drew inspiration from a rock star and chose Sting, as all three were massive fans of The Police. John Constantine himself was even a founder and member of a British punk band called Mucous Membrane in the comics. However, Gary Lester, another member of the band, saw them as leaning more towards New Romantic, a genre known as New Wave in the U.S. For context, Constantine was born in Liverpool, making him a distinctly British character, though the film adaptation took a more Americanized approach to his portrayal.

At the time this movie was still new, people were more upset by that this Constantine has dark hair (versus the original blonde), than that he's murican rather than english... ;) It would also seem this movie is being held higher in regard nowadays, than around the time of its release. @@lennyvalentin6485 I liked this film, too, although I'd read the "Hellblazer" comics -- it was one of the few DC titles I kinda liked. While this version of Constantine is better than a lot of whiners wanted to admit at the time of its release, I do prefer Matt Ryan's portrayal. Honorable mention goes to Jenna Coleman's Johanna Constantine, as well, in the Netflix series, "The Sandman."

The character of John Constantine ~originated~ in DC's *Swamp Thing,* in a 6-part(?) story arc. I collected that arc, back in the day; it was a fantastic story. And the true-to-the-actual-comics character of Constantine (i.e. a blond Brit who resembled Sting) was a regular for a while in the CW "Arrowverse," having guested on *Arrow* before moving on to recurring-guest-then-regular in *Legends of Tomorrow.* Before that, there was actually an unfortunately short-lived series called *Constantine,* starring the same actor who played him in the aforementioned "Arrowverse" shows.

The thing that John removed from his friend's neck was an amulet of protection of sorts. It prevented him from having his visions for starters, but also prevented people like Balthazaar from being able to affect him like he ultimately did. He needed him to have his visions though, because he sensed that something was coming, and it would have protected Angela if she'd kept it around her neck instead of accidently leaving it in the car.

John Constantine is a former punk rocker and a magic wielder and exorcist, doomed to hell for cheating the Devil. He first appeared in the Swamp Thing comics, of the late 80s, and in the pages of John Constantine HELLBLAZER thru the 90s and early 2000s. The end Boss was Lucifer, played by Peter Stormare. LUCIFER , in the comics, would abandon Hell to Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, and take up residence on Earth He had a good run with his FOX/Netflix series. Constantine would return for a couple seasons of his own series on NBC, and as a regular on most seasons of CW's Legends of Tomorrow. On both shows he was played by Matt Ryan

I think you point out really well during the bath/drowning scene "is this a twist?". I think it's been done really well up to the that point that everything John has done so far that she has seen could have been a con. This depiction of Lucifer is by far the best I have seen. Peter makes Satan feel so real with his performance. And the white suit dripping of black tar is such a cool thought; it lives rent free in my head since I have watched this movie. Glad you got to watch this!
