1:41:56 I'm pretty sure that Shia LaBeouf's character Chas wasn't human though. He was a half-breed angel. So when Chas is killed by the unseen force, revealed to be Gabriel, an angel. He sacrificed himself for good. When Gabriel killed him they lost their divinity and God's favor, and it was transferred to Chas. At least, thats what I took away when watching the movie.
@BadMoviesRule Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard this theory, and it’s possible but if he was an Angel then why or how did he feel pain? Gabriel didn’t experience that until she was mortal at the end 🤷♂️
@BTA1991 Жыл бұрын
@BadMoviesRule Good point. But if he was a half-breed before though, and not a full angel, the movie shows half breeds showing pain. So I'm assuming if he was a half breed, his human side would let him feel pain. Him becoming an angel is because his mortal side was killed, and his angel side lived on. Again, like you said, it's just a theory. 😊

I honestly love the concept of what if you knew God existed. In an entire religion based on faith and belief where the main thing you are called to do is believe someone died for your sins what if you for a fact knew God does exists. It’s a deep question especially, in the context of this movie, sense you can’t use your belief to get into heaven you have to somehow do the impossible and work your way there. While this is vastly different from the Comics I almost prefer this story. John is a very complex character but his origins aren’t actually all that important to the character. What’s most important is what he does and how he does it. Instead of fighting his way through a situation he’d rather talk his way out. Whether that’s cutting a deal or casting a sealing spell so he can annoy his enemies into submission both are fueled by the fact that he is an ass with a want to both do good and serve his own interests.
@shadowanderson2004 Жыл бұрын
@@BrienMalone he didn’t kill himself. He died in a car crash and was sent to hell where he was spared of death but was told no matter what he’d end up in hell. John literally says he’s trying to do the impossible by working his way to heaven even though he knows the devil is owed his soul. Thats why the end of the movie works because he does the impossible and is willing to go to hell if it means saving someone which then God doesn’t allow John to go to hell.

I know I’m late to the party- I just discovered this podcast and am making my way through the back catalogue. This was actually one of (if not THE) first movie Michelle Monaghan was in. Up until that point, she’d only guest starred in small tv show roles. I actually own a copy of this movie on DVD and there are BTS videos included as extra content (because they all had those back then) and they talked about her situation and role in the movie and how excited they were to work with her. I always thought it was weird because they made a big deal about it being her first movie and how excited they were for her and then in the next sentence that she’d only been in less than 10 shows or whatever, and I always thought it was strange that they were making a huge deal out of a literal no name actress. Anyway, she had a bigger part in the movie that was all cut out. You literally see her in bed with Constantine at one point and she is the first to point out that Satan would collect his soul himself when John died for real. At the end when he is about to fight the whole room of halfbreeds, she tries to talk him down. When he says he’s gonna deport “all of you”, he’s specifically looking her in the eye when he lights the water sprinklers. Sorry for the dissertation; this movie is a guilty pleasure between my siblings and I, and we watched the BTS specials multiple times.

I liked this movie, there were cool scenes and moments in isolation that feel iconic, just as there are moments and scenes that feel meh, or the overall conflict/characters not compelling. Pretty much any moment with Tilda Swinton as Gabriel was visually impactful, just with her delivery of her "your fucked." speech at the fireplace, and the I C O N I C shot of her crashing down on Constantine in full white with her bare foot just punning his neck like it was nothing. The visual storytelling is AMAZING in these scenes in isolation: The priest drowning himself from thirst, just the _awareness_ of the _actual_ villain destroying the bug guy, Constantine walking through perpetual nuclear blast Hell, the visuals of how time stops when *powerful* metaphysical stuff happens to depict impact combined with the seemingly instantaneous nature of metaphysical knowledge/experiences. There's some stuff like the electrice chair or even some of the fights that are kinda meh or forgettable, but it felt like the people making this got to _play around_ a bit, but if feels like higher ups were trying to make the next Blade series or something and it didn't land

Theologically, this movie is a total farce. And yet somehow, it's still more theologically accurate than 2004's Hellboy. As pure fantasy, this is a straight-up good movie. And as laughable as the quasi-Christian theology is, the theme of selfless self-sacrifice is irrevocably Christian. John Constantine was willing to go back to hell, where all the demons he banished were *licking their chops* waiting for him, if it meant not only saving Angie, but also rescuing Isabel. Kind of reminds me of Saint Paul, who in his letter to the Church in Rome, stated his willingness to give up his place in the kingdom of heaven if it meant his unbelieving Jewish kinsmen would be saved. My trashcan goes to Shia LaBeouf, who plays the same exact character in every damn movie he makes.

Absolutely adore this movie. I rewatch this from time to time. Its not like the comics at all. The only similarities is the guys name and that hes a wizard. Other then that dont even worry about the comic book. But I love how much of an asshole Constantine is. I love how all the magic is hard to do and ritualised as opposed to DnD style magic and throwing fireballs. The entire cast is incredible, specifically Peter Stormare and Tilda Swinton. The only let down is the last action scene with Keanu gunning down all the demons in the hospital is pretty lame and short. It works better as an Urban Fantasy detective movie then an action movie.
